US: Investigate and Prosecute Those Responsible for Torture

After the attacks of September 11, 2001, US government officials approved brutal and illegal interrogation methods, including waterboarding which has been prosecuted as a war crime in the United States for more than 100 years. These techniques were used on an unknown number of detainees in Guantanamo, Iraq, Afghanistan and secret CIA centers. Yet no senior official has been held to account for these crimes, which violate both US and international law. If the United States is to wipe away the stain of Guantanamo and Abu Ghraib and deter torture from happening again, it should investigate and prosecute those officials who authorized or ordered torture or other mistreatment.

At the same time, it is crucial to understand how the United States came to employ such barbaric techniques. An independent, non-partisan commission should be established to examine the actions of the CIA, the military, Congress, and the executive branch and make recommendations to ensure such acts are not repeated.

Contact your congressional representatives and Attorney General Eric Holder and urge them to initiate both a criminal investigation and a commission of inquiry.

Gladly signed. Heat is on the UK government now too for their collusion and complicity in torture. May everyone responsible be prosecuted. Sad to think that Amnesty International was started in the UK but this government has been actively involved in torture. There is no out for them. The proof is all there it seems. Shame on Blair and now Brown. Son of the manse indeed - good Presbyterian? And Blair now a Roman Catholic? They should squirm the pair of them. Put them on trial along with their minions in MI5 and MI6.

What a wonderful world this can be when humans start respecting other humans. We all live under the same sun, and we all have the right to breath the same air and we all can live in peace together. It is up to us all to make these changes.

They lied to us about this while they tortured in our names! They must go to jail or it can happen again AND SHAME US. It will take generations for what we allowed to happen to heal world wide. We should be ashamed, very ashamed that these people aren't in jail. NO ONE IS DOING A THING ABOUT TORTURE, WAR CRIMES AND SENSELESS DEATHS, NO ONE IS GOING TO JAIL AND THEY HAVE TO, OR WE ALL LOSE. Shame on Congress.

Note the 'Terms of Reference.'
The 'investigation' does not actually cover whether or not illegal acts were performed per se : just whether or not acts were taken which could not be 'justified' by perversion of law which is known to be incorrect but is used to excuse lack of prosecution.
