This petition calls on large wind turbine manufacturers in the U.S. and worldwide to study and incorporate new design elements for wind turbines/blades which consider safety of birds, lower noise levels, better efficiency and eco-friendliness.

Tehachapi, CA has the largest wind turbine project in the US near my home in the desert. We are known for having large predator birds that are already endangered. These helix turbines would greatly help protect these great birds necessary for the environment. Thanks Tom.

This idea is not new, Someone needs to ask the question "why were the old style wind turbines pushed so hard when better technology was available?"

Save the birds and be more energy efficient at the same time! The DNA helix-shaped wind turbines sound intriguing. The more we look to nature, the better it gets!

Thanx Tom. I hadn't heard of these before. Maybe this design would reduce some of the resistance to wind power. Now if we could pry some money out of the wallets of the provincial government we could move ahead and catch up with Europe.

Finally!! These better designs have been being ignored because of a monopoly IMHO. There are SO many more efficient and inventive ideas out there. Plus, there is the ultimate solution of methane generators. I encourage you all to look this up and see how all farms could be self-sufficient in energy and most could produce lots of electricity to sell back to the system, while cities, towns, etc., could solve so many problems by doing the same thing on a much larger scale. We also have a huge dump near our house, the biggest in the province at least, and they are doing what they do in the US: piping the methane and other gases (the ones that stink and make us sick) into a generation station which produces electricity on a large scale. ('many' "birds with one stone") Why do humans always overlook the most obvious and sanest solutions?

While we need to develop alternative forms of power we must not do so at the expense of our wildlife...this is one big step in the right direction.

I've even just recently read about a smaller one that would sell for about $700.00 for homes !

Hate to be a wet blanket, but such designs are not more efficient than propeller-type turbines - they actually extract much less power from a given wind speed. These are modified Savonius turbines (google that to get the facts), the basic design dates from 1922. The helical shape is not for efficiency, but for smoothness; a straight-vaned Savonius turbine generates torque surges that wear out the bearings prematurely.

They can operate in high winds when a conventional turbine has to be shut down or tear itself apart, though, which can compensate for lower mechanical efficiency. They're also not bothered much by turbulence, making them usable in many more locations.

Conventional wind turbines are easier to scale up to megawatt size - but that's efficient only in wide-open areas with steady, moderate winds. That's why the big-money people like them; they want large-scale centralized power production that generates lots of profit. Distributed generation - lots of small generators closer to where the power is used - may be better for the environment, and provide a more stable, resilient power grid, but it's hard to make millions off a system like that.
