Paul Krugman - The Politics of Spite

Conservative glee at America's rebuff by the Olympic Committee show that the guiding principle of Republicans is spite pure and simple. If they think something might be good for the president, they're against it -- whether or not it's good for America.

They think that their choices are smart and intelligent... spite tends to block out people.. because there can only be one beneficiary and that would be them

This is a prim example of how low the Republican party has come. I just could not beileve that I was watching on TV Americans actually cheering America not getting the bid to have the Olimpics in America. WTF is all I can say.

The Twilight Zone...where down is up, the sky is black and corporate communism thrives. WTF is right, Cynthia.

I agree with Cynthia, this show how determined the Republican party to sink to the bottom. The Republicans are cheering the loss of the Chicago Olympics . Thanks Tom, more distressing news.

Repulicans today are a spoiled rotten bunch of schoolhouse bullies plain and simple. They can't think for themselves so they follow talk radio idiots and clowns on the news. I think they are very scared because they can't think for themselves so any change that involves thinking puts them over the edge to insanity.

Uh, there you go doing the wing nut spin again. Don't you folks ever get tired of being discovered for your distortions? We all know the USA has many times hosted the Olympics. Winning the bid was not what we are talking about. I for one am glad a South American country won.

The issue is the fact that you and your wing nut friends didn't cheer for the other country that won the bid. You folks cheered because you think it's a loss for Obama. Straight up, good old anti-Americanism is what it is. As Krugman said, "If they think something might be good for the president, they're against it -- whether or not it's good for America."

Thanks Tom.

Well, UMMMM there are Pros and Cons on both sides of this one. Good Republicans, and Good Democrats...again, bad ones on both sides too!!!

But, guys in my opinion to Rate all of Republicans in the group that we are all a ton of people that are against another person in government is just wrong.

I am sure there were A TON of Republicans who voted for Obama, personally since I am Republican I was so upset with Palin was put in as a running mate with McCain..

Going to have to go against most of these comments and I guess reap the woes of that will come at me.

For sure IF BOBBY KENNEDY, JFK were still alive I would be riding their coat tails, and did totally respect Reagan!

Personally, I hate it when any President is under attack, he was choosen by the nation whatever decision HE makes needs to be supported, but again, I do not have any problems with all of the debates that take place. In my little brain, I think that discussion is great, if we don't have all of these debates we are like a person that is like a pied piper (rats) just following what we are TOLD, gotta sort of claim the FIFTH on this one. UMMMMM

You are so right, Marion, and this is what is so pathetic - didn't we used to be Americans first and then Republicans or Democrats?

"...this is what is so pathetic - didn't we used to be Americans first and then Republicans or Democrats?"

Arielle...it's called 'cutting off one's nose to spite one's face. Which ties so well into Krugman's title, 'The Politics of Spite.'

Thanks Tom

I was pleased that Rio de Janeiro won the bid to hold the 2016 Olympic Games, because this is the first time the Summer Olympics will be held in South America, somehting I consider to be long overdue.

If some Americans have reacted with spite against Obama I just wonder why they did not think it was good for the Olympic movement.

If this attitude translates across the American political scene I suspect that Republicans may not be back in power for some time.

Wow honey..talk about "out there"... that's the best you can do for a response...is to call me a "wing nut" ...yet I suppose you do feel perfectly "A OK " for the president to go around the world and diss this great country at every turn..I have NEVER heard of such an insane thing in my life...maybe you should look a little closer in the mirror honey before you go calling others "wing nuts" ... we found that the left went so far left that they ran right into the ass of the far right... any idea as to when he might actually sit his ass in the seat behind that desk for more than maybe 5 mins and actually do some real work... instead of flying around leaving a huge global footprint and burning so damned much of the US monies that could be better spent on maybe say... oh i don't know...homeland security...jobs..or how about considering just how much is spent on every trip including their little foray to Copenhagen...and how many insurance policies that could have bought for those without insurance...or maybe that's just a little too much for you all to consider...
meanwhile over 400 billion will be stripped away from medicare and here's a little something else to consider...all of the items listed here will be taxed to help raise enough money to help pay for the new healthcare...now with those increased taxes guess what your insurance companies are going to do to help defray the costs..hmm.hmm..pass those costs onto you to help defray..so I think there are so many other things that need to be considered and taken care of here before this country can ever really consider hosting or even putting in a bid for the Olympics...

IMO the way that Pres Obama is so called running the United States we could hardly afford hosting the Olympics. Oh maybe he was going to set up another Stimulus package lol

I think the good people of Illinois have been spared another opportunity for overspending and grapft.

The two week party which will happen in Vancouver/Whistler in Feb 2010 will cost the BC taxpayer $2 Billion....and that is only what is showing. The security costs alone are $1 Billion.

The Republicans are just being snide, but Chicago is really better off.

The rabid right just doesn't get it. When they damn the President, they damn their own country to the world...and 'these' people used to think they owned the damn flag too.hee hee..Sanity won out in the last two elections and I for one am glad to know sanity exists still, I was woried for a while there. Now if we can just shut down the Insurance companies w/ a Public option..HINT!! Only then will we see their greed for what it is..and that THEY have the true death panels.
