I had a rescue cat who only caught (bar one episode) mice and voles - and I praised him to the skies for catching each rodent - the only time he made a mistake and came home with a sad little bundle of feathers - I spoke crossly to him for the first time in his life (his jaw dropped in shock) and refused him entry to the house. He never did it again.

My present rescue cat is an indoor cat - and she had been so vilely treated by humans that she has never wanted to go out - she has two large and wonderful cat-trees for nests and for scratching and is very happy with life inside and has never even asked to go outside.
