European Zoo Directive? EAZA? Anything to say you two?
I read one comment on the site under the article asking why the animal charities are not stepping in to offer a home. Most of the big charities will not contribute to rehoming costs. The Sanctuaries are not always able to take animals from zoos because the costs can sometimes run into huge figures. There are transport costs, quarantine costs and new enclosure building costs if the species in question will not go into an existing group. It is not as simple as people think for sanctuaries to take animals especially with the need for places being as great as it is. Building a new enclosure with indoor area can cost 6 figure sums easily. This is one reason why I feel strongly that the EU should be making funding available. There is no Government funding in this country for animals in this predicament and every penny has to be raised from the public's generosity.

Oh God this is tragic - I am praying for a miracle for these poor animals - they shouldn't be in a zoo in the first place.
