Mission Accomplished: Michelle Liqve Is the First Woman Hunter To "Take Down" A Polar Bear With Bow & Arrow

Animals  (tags: Animal Welfare, Animal Cruelty, Polar Bear Hunts, Michelle Liqve Kills Polar Bear With Bow, HORRIFIC HUNTING CRUELTY! )

I became overwhelmed as I watched the big bear roll over knowing he was down for good. A lot of emotions come with a hunt of this caliber: excitement at having killed my first bear; amazement at the beauty of the bear; and shock at what I'd just done.

Smiling over death of such a beauty. The polar bears are in struggle, they are drowning due to lack of ice and we have this going on! She should be shocked over what she had just done, hope it haunts her forever.

From "Women's Hunters:"

"Michele Leqve has only been bow hunting for the past 11 years, and in that time, she has taken many, big game animals and has 9 different species! She has 15 Pope & Young Class animals. She started bow hunting in the fall of 1996. She met her husband Jim in 1995 and quickly found out that he was a bow hunter only, so she put down her gun and quickly followed in his foot steps. She and her husband Jim travel all over the United States , Canada , Mexico , and South Africa pursuing the animals the love to hunt. Her most precious trophy is the 9 1/2 foot Polar Bear she took in Nunavut Canada ( Baffin Bay ) on April 14th 2006 , where she became the first woman to take a Polar Bear with a bow! Michele has a new DVD out called, “Hunting Nanuq with Xtreme Bowhuntress Michele Leqve” it features her Polar Bear hunt and 4 of her other big game animals, including Caribou, Whitetail, Black Bear & Elk.

Over the last 11 years, throughout her worldly travels, Michele has found herself hunting in weather from 35 below zero, up to 110 degrees, in snow, fog, rain, thunderstorms and even lightening. She feels the various weather conditions she’s hunted in has made it interesting and challenged her bowhunting skills.

To date, Michele has hunted for 10 North American Big Game species which include: Elk, Antelope, Mule Deer, Whitetail Deer, Coues Deer, Black Bear, Polar Bear, Quebec Labrador Caribou, Central Canadian Caribou and Woodland Caribou (this does not include any of the African species she has hunted.) In the future she hopes to hunt Moose, Barren Ground Caribou, Sitka Deer, Blacktail Deer, Wild Boar and other animals like Bobcat and Lynx. She feels hunting various big game is not only exciting but a constant learning lesson. She’s learned throughout her 11 years of bowhunting to be patient, positive and to practice regularly, but not over-practice. She’s learned to accept the weather as it comes and just be sure to be prepared for anything!

Michele is a field producer and has been on two TV shows that aired on the Sportsman’s Channel. One was; Greg Hopf’s “DEER QUEST” Outdoor Adventures TV Show, and the other one was “WomenHunters® Outdoors” TV Show. She is previously filming for the upcoming TV show “ASAT® Nation” which will air on the Sportsman’s channel.

Michele has been in 2 commercials, one being an ASAT® Camouflage commercial, and the other is the new Whisker Biscuit commercial with the Polar Bear she shot. She has been on several Radio shows and pod-casting programs, and been published several times in “Bowhunter Magazine”, and “Bear Hunting Magazine”. Michele is currently on several Pro-staff positions with; Mathews Bows, Nikon Optics, Scent-Lok (Advisory team), Justin Charles Outdoor Gear, Steelforce Broadheads, Cobra sights, Trophy Ridge Products (Whisker Biscuit), ASAT® CAMO and Carbon Express arrows.

Along with being a photographer, she has taught Archery and Bowhunting classes at the Women in the Outdoors events in Minnesota . Being an active member of the WomenHunters™ Club, Michele has held the position of V.P. of Public Relations, and is currently on the International Pro-Staff and a staff writer.

Michele is active in helping women and children get started in bowhunting. She is a recurring guest speaker at local high schools where she talks to the children about her Polar Bear hunt and several of the different animals she has taken. You could say that Michele has never met a stranger. With her energy, big heart, and knowledge she is an asset to the bow hunting industry.

Michele’s 'real' job is a Flight Attendant for Northwest airlines."

From Michelle Liqve's Women Hunters Blog:

"As the dogs struggled to pull the two of us through the deep snow, we searched for the big boar. Looking back now, our two-and-a-half hour ride didn't seem that long, but the sun was setting, and I feared we wouldn't find the bear before dark.

After covering four or five miles, we came upon the bear's track. The dogs zoned in on the track and took off. Finally, Omik saw the bear up ahead - he was lying down about 500-600 yards away. I made Omik stop the team as I glassed the bear with my Nikon lOx42s. We watched him for about five minutes, and then he got up and slowly sauntered away.

Omik released his bear-fighting dog, Bear, and off we went again. The other dogs pulled harder, trailing Bear, who was running like crazy to catch up to the big white boar. We traveled for about a mile to a small ridge, where both the dog and the bear lay down, tolerating each other enough to rest (polar bears can not run very far without getting overheated).

Within 80 yards of my bear, Omik turned the rest of the dogs loose. They all ran to the bear, barked at him, and then went a safe distance away to lie down and rest I started moving toward the bear so I could get a shot, but Omik kept telling me to stay by his side, as he attempted to load what looked to me like a rusty, old gun. All I could think was, That thing isn't going to work if we need it, so it's all up to me! More on my mind, however, was how badly I wanted to get an arrow into the bear. Only three of the dogs stayed close to the bear, but none of them got between us. Nothing protected us from this nine-foot bear, except me and my Mathews bow and Omik with his frozen gun.

Edging to within 35 yards, I used my rangefinder to make sure of the distance. I had to get this right - no room for mistake. Because of the extreme cold (-25 F), my rangefinder didn't seem to work correctly. Neither did my eyes. Everything looked white, and it was difficult to judge the distance. The rangefinder read 27.5 yards. So I inched forward a few more steps, steadied my 20-yard pin, and released. I missed the bear completely.

After five days on the ice, my "mission" was completed in just five hours.

At first I thought I'd hit him low in the heart, and I was waiting for him to topple over. Omik said, "Another one!" Struggling to pull another arrow out of my. frozen quiver, I realized my first shot was way too low. I settled my 3D-yard pin behind his leg, let my arrow fly, and watched it disappear into his lungs. He growled and lunged toward the dogs, and I waited for him to go down. I knew the shot didn't require a follow-up, but I didn't want to take any chances, so I sent my third arrow through the bear's heart.

I became overwhelmed as I watched the big bear roll over, knowing he was down for good. A lot of emotions come with a hunt of this caliber: excitement at having killed my first bear; amazement at the beauty of the bear; and shock at what I'd just done. As I stood there, shaking and crying, I realized that I'd accomplished my mission - I was the first woman to take a polar bear with bow and arrow.

AUTHOR'S NOTES: Out of the five days we spent on the sea ice, my hunt lasted only about five or six hours. The experience as a whole was far more important to me than taking the bear ¬that was just a bonus. Living like the Inuits for those five days was very special to my husband and me - learning their ways, watching them work, listening to them talk, and learning how they hunt Nanook, the great white bear."

Sickening, absolutely sickening! I have nothing against hunting but only when it is for food and when it is done properly so that the animal do not suffer! Polar bears are endangered and they are not food so that worthless piece of disgusting crap did that to feel superior and to show off! She is disgusting and evil!

As long as trophy hunting is legal, you will always have serial killers. Plenty of sociopaths and sick F$%# 's out there. What is horrifying is that this is legal. This is not the type of celebration I had in mind for International Women's Day. Is this what Women's "Lib" meant, we can go out to kill animals that are endangered animals just like the boys....If Women want to hunt for food, survival, in self defense....okay..... but to trophy hunt or just for fun? guess you really can't make generalizations on sex, color or creed...

Sarah Palin, CLONE. That's all this person is. Now we've desensitized women to the state that men are. Congratulations.

I can't figure out why polar bear hunting would be legal ANYWHERE considering the animal's numbers have plummeting and continue to fall because of habitat destruction (global warming) and they having trouble finding food because of unprecedented ice melts. Oh, wait. This persecution of other species we call "legalized hunting" is merely a ploy for 1) selling other species between humans (this is called SLAVERY, people), and 2) excused as a "humane and merciful alternative to starving." What a lie. Humans destroy and ruin the bears
environment and THEN claim to be bringers of "humane relief" what complete and utter crap.

I just don't understand - is there ANYONE on the planet who does the right thing simply because it's the right thing to do? Is there ANYONE who isn't completely motivated by profit and self-interest? Anyone at all?

Oh, wait! I guess that means all the humans who fight for rights and protections for OTHER species, even though it's of no personal benefit to themselves. So much for animal rights, vegan and vegetarians trying to "push things down other people's throats." It's more like they are trying to keep everyone else's bad, selfish habits in check because apparently when it comes to other species, there are few willing to do this on their own.

She says -

"The natural order demands that death is necessary to sustain life. Some plant or animal must die for me to eat and live."

Then she goes on to say -

"The food theme for 2009 was Thai and for 2010 pasta. We always carry wine."

I assume that she 'took down' the pasta in her previous hunt!

So it is apparent that she buys her food like most of us do and she does not NEED to hunt to survive, she is just using the same crappy excuse that all hunters use to justify their thirst for blood.

She said -

"A lot of emotions come with a hunt of this caliber: excitement at having killed my first bear; amazement at the beauty of the bear; and shock at what I'd just done. "

Well.....I am not sure what SHE is looking at, but a killed bear is no longer beautiful in my eyes.

This also contradicts her first statement that hunting is necessary to survive, as she is taking pleasure from the hunt, anyone who truly hunts for survival should not be taking pleasure in the kill, but should be thanking the animal for the sacrifice that they have made to feed the persons family.

BOW HUNTING IS A DISGRACE as this method causing a lot of unnecessary suffering, anyone who participates is just disgusting and should be ashamed of themselves.

okay, o let me get this straight...
a lady killed a polar bear. she's really proud of it. and she wants us to be proud for her.
am i missing something? because this is a little concerning.
i understand that some people like hunting game, i have a lot of family who does. they hunt for fun and for the meat. it's one thing to hunt a deer and eat it, but, seriously? a polar bear? did she at least make it's death less painfull? did she at least preserve the meat?

No disrespect to any of the kind-hearted men out there, but I am so disappointed that women are doing this, especially when they excuse themselves by dragging us all back to the stone ages when hunting was a necessity for survival and ironically... the mans job!

So Hanna, it is OK for A LOT of YOUR family to hunt game for FUN (your words), but you think that this woman is wrong?

Women Hunting Dall Sheep in the Brooks Range, Alaska
Thursday, 14 April 2011 23:18 | Written by Julia Heinz
Firearms - Rifles/Guns

For the past 3 years my friends and I have been hunting sheep in the Brooks Range in Northern Alaska. Experiencing these remote wilderness trips has changed my perspective of life. When I am in the midst of these lovely wild mountains and long flowing rivers, I realize that I am quite small yet magically blessed with being a part of the natural order.

The natural order demands that death is necessary to sustain life. Some plant or animal must die for me to eat and live. Hunting is the process of stalking, killing, and surviving and this requires an acute awareness and presence. When I am hunting I feel most alive. I feel what it means to be a human, raw and exposed, without the cushion of society.

I enjoy both the planning process and the product of our hunts. I plan the gear and my friend, Kimberley, plans the food. Marianne and Kay have the same system. Everyone is responsible for providing 3 days of food for the group. The food theme for 2009 was Thai and for 2010 pasta. We always carry wine. We avoid duplicating gear. We only need one spotting scope, one stove. The weight limit for us and gear is 1200 lbs and we take 1199!

Its a great pity that she didn't feel remorse, or shame, or sorrow that she had took an innocent animal's life to satisfy her own selfish needs. People like her make me feel totally sick, sick of the human race, sick of what we've become, sickened at how cheap some people value another species' life. I will feel this so-called trigger-happy moron's sorrow for her as she so obviously has no heart and no soul, only an ego far bigger than her brain. I pity her, pity her lack of compassion and lack of empathy and the fact that she can only see and carry out death in the fast dwindling world of ours. Shame on you....

Oh Michelle - how I wish this story was the other way around. Since you think it's so wonderful to kill innocent animals, I wish this picture and story were of the polar bear smiling over your body as you lay dead in the snow. Your a bad person and you had better be worried when it's your time to pass.

Michelle - question....Did you take the life of this polar bear to use his meat to feed yourself or your family or to use his fur to keep you warm at night while you sleep?

Terrible someone could find hunting (killing) so exciting and promote such an ugly, evil way and encourage it to families and children! She took the life, of a member of those various animal families, for her own selfish, twisted, satisfaction and public bragging. Anyone who has morals and ethics as this is not a good role model, nor is it a trait that should be bragged about, nor is it anything to be proud of.

A polar bear knows almost no fear. It does not run away, nor hide, nor evade in any way, but rather investigates. This woman committed an act of great and profound evil.

What a disgusting evil bitch this so called woman is, Standing there like she has done something to be proud of by killing another living thing, She should beat to death she doesn't deserve the air to breath, Hunting and killing any animal is a crime against Nature and should be a law against this stupid so called sport, I hope the next trip she and her husband takes they freeze to death, There is nothing to be proud of by taking an animals life.

What a Bitch and the picture with her smiling so proud of what's she done its these kind of people who make me steam she has no love and compassion for Nature's Children. She and Palin are cut from the same cloth they are not sportswomen but are anti-enviromentalist and wildlife haters. If one so enjoy shooting wildlife then pickup a camera and take pictures so that each goes away happy the wildlife stays alive and the photographer has a memory that will last a lifetime. This women should stick to being a flight attendent and Not I repeat Not teach women and children archery of any kind for Im sure all they'll take away from her teachings is that its quite alright to do out of kill and destroy any wildlife that's out there. Repercussion has a way of rearing its head and carma will not be denied as they say What goes around Comes around.

You Say That the Battle is Over - sung by John Denver

" And you say that the battle is over
And you say that the war is all done
Go tell it to those
With the wind in their nose
Who run from the sound of the gun

And write it on the sides
Of the great whaling ships
Or on ice floes where conscience is tossed
With the wind in their eyes
It is they who must die
And its we who must measure the loss

And you say that the battle is over
And finally the world is at peace
You mean no one is dying
And mothers dont weep
Or its not in the papers at least

There are those who would deal
In the darkness of life
There are those who would fear down the sun
And most men are ruthless
But some will still weep
When the gifts we were given are gone

Now the blame cannot fall
On the heads of a few
Its become such a part of the race
Its eternally tragic
That that which is magic
Be killed at the end of the glorious chase

From young seals to great whales
From waters to wood
They will fall just like weeds in the wind
With fur coats and perfumes
And trophies on walls
What a hell of a race to call men

And you say that the battle is over
And you say that the war is all done
Go tell it to those
With the wind in their nose
Who run from the sound of the gun

And write it on the sides
Of the great whaling ships
Or on ice floes where conscience is tossed
With the wind in their eyes
It is they who must die
And its we who must measure the loss
With the wind in their eyes
It is they who must die
And its we who must measure the cost"

This is a link to the song on youtube. Be aware it is very upsetting to watch.

I can't imagine how she could watch the bear, in all of its majestic beauty, fall to a finalizing death and feel pride in her heart. The world is becoming desensitized. But it's good to see from the comments in this thread that we at care2 have not lost sensitivity and compassion.

This is just Wrong!! I agree the photo would be much better if Michelle's bloody body lay on the ground, dead at the feet of the polar bear.
Do they not know or care what "endangered" means?
It is my belief that you get back, threefold, what you send out to the world--so Michelle, you low-life bitch, I hope you enjoy it when Karma bites your no-good butt!!

Overwhelmed as you watched the bear rolled over dying…. Amazement at the beauty of the DEAD bear. Excitement having killed your FIRST bear.…Do you plan to do this again....Did you feel any remorse having killed an endangered species just for the fun if it? Did you feel shamed thinking about the terror this animal must have felt, or the pain he must have endured? You should feel regret and sorrow for your actions......Karma, I hope it bites you in the ass.

This story of this so called "hunter" , who happens to be a woman - has evoked very strong feelings of anger, hate, disgust, shame, and others .And I have to admit that these feelings for this woman I do not know, nor would wish to know, have also risen up in me and like the rest of you - these feelings have erupted like an intense molten hot volcano !

Why do you think we all have reacted so strongly to her ? Is it because she killed an endangered polar Bear, because she kills many animals for the "Trophy" , and maybe because she is a woman ? Because women are supposed to love and nurture , not track and kill ?!

I , like many of you would like to knock that smile off her face ! I am not a violent person , but there is certain things said and done with the tracking and killing of this Polar Bear , that bring out feelings of such rage - that i want to make her feel what that poor polar Bear felt !

Being tracked relentlessly , by people, snowmobiles, a dog sled with many tracking, hunting dogs . Can you imagine the intense fear this bear went through , trying with all his great might to get away from these people and dogs that he KNEW meant to harm him! And why ? To be another Trophy to be stuffed and put on display ! That is so disgusting and not normal , it makes me so sick- and angry !

I would like to change the scenario . I would like to make her the hunted , in exactly the same way she hunted him - relentlessly, with machines and dogs and FEAR ! On and on for miles until his exhausted body could go no more - only it would be her - collapsing in the snow , surrounded by the barking, growling dogs - nipping and biting . And she would be too weak and frozen with fear and in her case, also cold. Then to have to look at the person standing there holding something that made her afraid , as she knew it was going to cause her great harm and very possibly - her death! She could sense that, feel it , smell it - but she had no way out , no where to go , no strength to run , and no shelter to hide in ! Vunerable, exposed , and intensely afraid because she knew she was going to die ! And she did not know why as she had done nothing to this person , had done nothing wrong - but she was going to die for the simple , insane stupidity of being another notch in this "hunter's belt" , another "Trophy" to be on display , for the stupid vanity - and "because she could" ! What a moronic level of reasoning! Only unlike her, I would NOT kill her - as in my case - it would be murder. It was the same for her when she killed the Polar Bear, but she did not see it that way - the bear was an object, a "trophy" an prize she had tracked, hunted and killed - because that Wes the kind of person she is - that was the kind of feelings and actions she was capable of. And the irony of it all - is that she is proud of herself for this brutal act of murdering this innocent polar Bear. Look at that smile on her face.

Yeah , lady , one day - Instant Karma Gonna Get You - and it ain't gonna be nice !!

The obvious thirst for blood sport and never ending lust for fame is obvious. A real hunter uses a camera and the animal survives. There is no glory to be obtained, nor admiration deserved by individuals whose apparent sole purpose in life is build a reputation on the animals they exploit.

No one stops to think that that one victim may carry the only genetic strand that will allow the species to adapt, survive and continue the species.

Shame on all Sports and Trophy hunters, the Outfitters that promote this exploitive and lucrative business.

A real trophy is the amazing experience to see an animal in the wild, that once in a lifetime photograph and the knowledge that no life was taken to provide pleasure for oneself.

Everyone you know why we are witnessing a very SUDDEN push to get women "out there hunting as 'sportswomen'?"

It's because men are doing it less. So those who are dependent upon profiting on the sales of wildlife for killing, i.e., "hunting," are now *suddenly* embracing women when before, their attitudes were that the "little lady" was supposed to be home cooking and looking after children. But now, since firearms sellers, outfitters, and wildlife agencies aren't getting as many men participating in the speciesist bloodbath known as "hunting," it's being pushed and promoted to women to ensure there will still be a "market" for their "products" and "services." In other words, women weren't wanted in the past, they were in the way. Now they are seen as a - pun intended - cash cow to bring in the bucks for retailers and others who aren't seeing as many male customers as they used to. Women are being used as "second choice" consumers who only NOW are being pursued for certain activities (whereas before, women were socially and legal PENALIZED and PUNISHED for handling men's "weapons" and hunting animals...huge departure from previous history and anthropological evidence!).

In other words, it's ALL ABOUT MONEY and NOT about science, need, or anything else. Let this be a lesson to those who continually PREACH to us, the non-violent who don't accept speciesism, that we see through your concocted lies. Information is a very, very powerful thing and the truth has a way of coming out in the end.

Classic research exposing how "sport hunting/fishing" is a fraud against other species perpetrated by ignorance and profiteering:
