Dear Friends: This petition has no verifiable target(s). I wrote the petition author and respectfully requested she include viable targets and more background information. I posted this as news due to its disturbing content and the horror the cats being engineered and tested on are going through. If anyone has any other information to add, please inform.

From the petition author:

"The Mayo Clinic's Eric Poeschia is inserting a rhesus macque gene - producer of an anitviral protein into unfertilized feline eges and adding luminescent protein from a jellyfish so they can monitor the genes under lights and microscopes because the cat will glow in the dark. These animals and small kittens will be laboratory animals whose lives will be living under a microscope and being injected with FIV disease to see if this helps with the false hope that this will help find a cure for AIDS.

Humans are not kittens nor do we have any of the genes that would make this research applicable to humans. Laboratory animals have a bleak existence and only have pain and discomfort to look forward to after which they will be killed.

There is a control group of kittens too. This control group will be normal kittens infected with FIV in the lab. After being purposely infected these kittens will suffer from the illness without treatment to see how they differ from the kittens made immune genetically.

Lab animals are killed after experimentation is finished. No one is allowed to adopt them or bring them home. Articles about this specific research said the animals are well cared for because they are well nourished and better off than homeless animals. They do not say that their lives will be shortened to the time length of the experiment or discuss the daily routines of being poked with needles, having blood taken, or given drugs and that their entire lives are spent in small cages where they cannot run or play or be given love. The kittens also have no voice in the matter. Those of you who have been in hospital know how uncomfortable it is when they come to take blood several times daily and give you drugs intravenously. Thank you for taking your time to read this.

You can also write the Mayo Clinic and tell them you are against their practice of creating animals genetically to use them to experiment on. Thank you for your time and caring."

Catherine, we should all send that quote in the letter we write to the Mayo Clinic and Eric Poeschia! BTW, there is no guarantee our signatures will be sent given the lack of targets. well, we test human ailments on animals, so why not test animal ailments on humans?

I rerember seeing a black and white poster of a baby that had words on it "you see a normal healthy child, we see a cure for feline AIDS"(or was it Leukemia?)

the FIV vac is not perfect. and some people for whatever reason can't have a cat indoors all the time.

How could this help cure AIDS? It sounds like pseudo-science... Furthermore, ethics should always be the guiding principle, esp. when other living beings are concerned -- not a drop of it here. They will not likely get what they want yet will hurt a great deal of animals: This must be abandoned!

first of all, this kitten was genetically altered while it was an embryo, if you can alter genes after birth than gene therapy would be further along. it pisses me off that people whine about animal testing and reap the benefits of it, everything has been tested on animals. you know that soap that says "not tested on animals"? every chemical in that soap was, just that the soap itself was not. if you people are so agianst animal testing stop using medicines or procedures, better yet, volunteer yourselves for the testing

This is worse (if there is a worse) than testing on animals !!!!! Now they are creating animals to practice on, only to kill them when they have outlived their use!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Sadly this is not a new thing, but it is more than time it was stopped!!!!!!! I know it sometimes feels as if what we do is futile and insignificant, but it really isn't. Together we are strong.
