The ox is confined/starved for days. To increase frenzy food/water are placed within sight but out of reach. The Farra begins when the ox is driven from a pen & chased through the streets by crowds wielding stones, knives, lances. Days of torture ensue.

For decades the grotesque and indescribably horrific torture and murder of oxen and other animals has continued throughout coastal communities of Santa Catarina, Brazil. Though against the law, local authorities and the governor have turned a blind eye to this unholy display of animal cruelty.

WE CAN STOP THIS GROTESQUE DISPLAY OF INHUMANITY WITH CONTINUED PRESSURE! ACT NOW! CLICK THE STORY LINK ABOVE FOR DIRECT ACCESS TO THE SAMPLE LETTER AND ADDRESS LINKS.

Sample Letter. Please modify as you see fit:

Dear Ambassador:

I am writing in reference to the cruel festival "Farra do Boi". I respectfully urge the State of Santa Catarina to take immediate action and abide by the decision of the Supreme Tribunal Federal to ban the Farra do Boi.

The holy day tradition involves the population of each of the little coastal towns and villages. The day is spent beating to death an ox with knives, stones, sticks and piercing objects. The animals bones are broken and the eyes are poked out. Exhausted, tortured and suffering, they "comfort" the animal by giving him salt water to drink.

This barbaric "holy day" tradition has been posted on the Internet for the world to see. People in Brazil, as well as my friends and associates, are astonished by the lack of respect for the law. Your support is needed.

We've learned that right after the last Carnival, people in the city of Florianopolis have promoted Farra do Boi and none were arrested. The practice has been banned since 1997 but the Governor Esperidiao Amin does not take action in order to educate people or stop the torture.

According to Federal law number 9605/98, torturing animals is a crime. It's outrageous that violent people, such as the seven men who tortured and killed a horse in 2000, are not in jail.

People throughout the world are waiting and hoping for severe changes in the State of Santa Catarina.

Thank you for you attention.

Sincerely, (Name/Location)

My letter to luizhenrique@senador.gov.br:

Dear Sir:

Citizens of the global animal welfare community deserve an explanation for why the Ferra Do Boi festival continues despite it illegality. This festival of horrendous animal torture and murder was outlawed in 1997 yet still remains in practice despite decades of world-wide outrage and outright condemnation.

Please explain to citizens across the globe why the unholy ritualized torture, maiming and dismemberment of oxen continues in your state of Santa Catarina. The practice of torturing oxen to death has brought shame upon your nation and continues to elicit the horror and dismay of citizens all over the world.

There is simply no excuse for the practice and we demand it be stopped.....PERMANENTLY.

Citizens of Santa Catarina who flagrantly abuse the law and carry out the torture of oxen and other animals must be held accountable for breaking the law and be prosecuted by local authorities. We are well aware of the fact that wealthy politicians offer up oxen for torture
in return for votes. This flagrant abuse of power must also be stopped and held in check by members of local law enforcement.

Images of your citizens torturing innocent creatures to death are now viral and have been witnessed in every corner of the world. The men, women and children who participate in these horrific displays of depraved cruelty are no less than modern-day vampires.....monsters with no souls. The animals tortured and murdered are not biblical symbols of "evil" as supporters of the festivals would allege. The animals maimed and murdered during these unholy spectacles
are victims of a dark and depraved evil that has nothing to do with religion but rather an insatiable, archaic lust for blood.

Indeed, photographic and video evidence of your citizens torturing animals begs the question "Who is the animal?" Clearly, the "animals" are the ones with two legs.

It is your duty to enforce the law and stop the insanity behind the torture of oxen in Santa Catarina, which continues to bring your country deserved shame and ridicule. Why would any one want to
visit a country where God's creatures are treated with such disrespect and inhumanity? Enforce Brazilian law. Prosecute practitioners of Ferra Do Boi animal torture and bring this demonic "festival" to a permanent end.

SAMPLE LETTER

SUBJECT: Please immediately take action to end cruel Farra do Boi events!

Honorable Officials of Brazil

Brazil's Farra do Boi does not belong in the modern world. In over 30 coastal villages throughout Santa Catarina, adults and children annually observe “Oxen Fun Days” with the brutal torture of several hundred oxen.
This Holy Week ritual-which symbolizes the Passion of Jesus (the oxen represent Judas) or celebrates weddings, birthdays and other milestones - is clearly inhumane.
I will not spend my tourism money in Brazil until the State of Santa Catarina recognizes the Brazilian Supreme Court ruling of 1997 that bans Farra do Boi. I encourage officials to uphold this law with the arrest and prosecution of those who break it.
What was once an Easter or New Year's Day spectacle has sprawled into a weekly pastime for some communities. Revelers armed with sticks, knives, whips, stones, bamboo lances, and ropes chase a terrified ox through the streets for three or more days of stabbing and bludgeoning. In the frenzy, participants flick pepper into the ox's eyes and often gouge them out. Partakers break the ox's horns and legs and sever his tail. World Society for the Protection of Animals (WSPA) correspondents in Brazil have observed gasoline-soaked animals set on fire. Finally, the besieged animal is drowned in the ocean or killed and butchered for consumption.
Our world is a rainbow of religious and cultural mores, as unique as the countries that practice them. Ordinarily, people respect foreign customs even if they do not understand them. But cruelty never passes for “custom,” in any culture.
Moreover, Federal law number 9605/98 specifies deliberate animal torture as a crime in Brazil. Your assistance is necessary to assure animal abusers are penalized to the fullest extent under the law.
Citizens of the world are appalled by the lax regulations that allow this vulgar ritual to take place year after year. Polls indicate that most Brazilians do not favor the Farra do Boi.
It is time for the State of Santa Catarina to comply with the decision of the Supreme Tribunal Federal. The Farra do Boi is banned. Please enforce the law.
Thank you,

We are hypocrites ourselves if we protest such insane and inhumane cruelties while ignoring the horrors committed in raising and slaughtering innocent, gorgeously sacred, spiritual, sentient beings. Sometimes I'm just left speechless. This is part of the celebration of Holy Week??? Jesus wept. I long had a hankering to visit Brazil, but their tourism promoters can forget that, and if we can spread this sufficiently far and wide, perhaps others will join in a boycott of the country until this foul business is ended.

feel free to do so. I modified the sample letter that Michelle gave us. It can also be very effective in putting a quote at the end of your letter about the importance of showing compassion to animals, so you might want to add one but if you do so, please select a different one then the one I used.

SAMPLE LETTER:

Please Enforce the law banning the horrific cruelty of the Farra do boi.

Dear (Name of official)

I am writing in reference to the cruel festival "Farra do Boi". I respectfully urge the State of Santa Catarina to take immediate action and abide by the decision of the Supreme Tribunal Federal to ban the Farra do Boi.

Celebrating a holy day should not involve the torture of any animal of God’s. God made all creatures and it is in bible scripture as well as the religious canons of the Catholic Church that prohibits cruelty and suffering inflicted on any animal! Yet, this infamous day is spent beating to death an ox with knives, stones, sticks and piercing objects. The animals bones are broken and the eyes are poked out. Exhausted, tortured and suffering, they "comfort" the animal by giving him salt water to drink. Is this how you the world to see the people of Santa Catarina? Only the lowest people in terms of morality and lacking any decency would intentionally inflict such pain and torment on an animal. It debases anyone to commit such cruelty to a helpless animal and it makes all the citizens of Santa Catarina look like barbarians and people without any conscience!

It also reflects poorly on the government officials to allow such cruelty toward these oxen to take place! In fact it gives your country such a negative image that people have stated on websites and blog postings that they have no desire to visit such a cruel country as they fear your people who can commit such cruelty to another sentient being! If people can treat an animal so cruelly and so heartlessly, they can also do this to human beings. Therefore, many people, including myself, do not want to become a tourist in your country. So this horrific animal cruelty displayed during this festival also not only detracts from your country as civilized but detracts from the potential money that you could be making in tourism dollars. People don’t want to see animals so abused and tortured!

These barbaric acts of cruelty isn’t celebrating a holy day at all but instead is totally misguided and in fact is more like blasphemy as it treats the creation of God with no respect and with such shocking cruelty! Neither Jesus, the Blessed Mother nor any Saint would condone such acts of cruelty toward animals. If St. Francis saw what you were doing, he would tell you that you would all be punished severely by our Creator who created all animals and therefore all animals should be treated out of respect for our Creator. People in Brazil, as well as my friends and associates, are astonished by the lack of respect for the law. Your support and enforcement of this law is needed to get rid of this sinful indulgence to wanton cruelty!

We've learned that right after the last Carnival, people in the city of Florianopolis who participated in the ugliness and brutality of Farra do Boi weren’t even arrested. The practice has been banned since 1997 but the Governor Esperidiao Amin does not take action in order to educate people or stop the torture.
I’m asking you as Secretary of Public Defense to enforce this law as this is your responsibility as an elected official to see that laws are obeyed.

According to Federal law number 9605/98, torturing animals is a vicious crime! It's outrageous that violent people, such as the seven men who tortured and killed a horse in 2000, are not in jail.

People throughout the world are waiting and hoping for big reform in the way animals are treated in the State of Santa Catarina and no longer will this animal torture, which does nothing but bring out the worst in people, will be allowed to go on.

This is a quote from St Francis with the duty that we have toward animals who are made by our Creator as well: "Not to hurt our humble brethren (the animals) is our first duty to them, but to stop there is not enough. We have a higher mission--to be of service to them whenever they require it... If you have men who will exclude any of God's creatures from the shelter of compassion and pity, you will have men who will deal likewise with their fellow men. “ -- Saint Francis of Assisi

Thank you for you attention to this important matter.

Most Sincerely,

Wrote my own letter to the embassy in Washington and the governor of Santa Catarina. It just saddens and amazes me at what humans do to other living beings. Makes me really worry about the human race.

My letter to the Governor of Santa Catarina didn't make it through either.
But, for Canadians, at least, here are the sites where you can find the addresses of the Brazilian Embassy in Ottawa, as well as each provincial Brazilian Consulate: http://brazil.visahq.ca/embassy/Canada/
Please, everyone, DON'T let up on these defenceless creatures... And remember these words of Martin Luther king, Jr., "Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter."

I had NO IDEA, thank you Michele.
I wonder how our friends in Brazil feel about this, is it so culturally acceptable a tradition that they do not see the inhumanity?

Shame on them, Shame on us. How can anyone justify such torture? How can anyone want their children to learn this behavior. Ignorance is no excuse. It goes to show man is a savage.
