A regal 12-year-old German shepherd has wound up where no self-respecting senior wants to be: behind bars at a high kill animal control facility in Gardena, CA. The dog, named "Sarge" by individuals hoping to save his life is far from anything familiar.

From the article:

"A regal 12-year-old German shepherd has wound up where no self-respecting senior wants to be...behind bars at a high kill animal control facility in Gardena, Calif.

The dog, named "Sarge," by individuals hoping to save his life, is far from anything familiar to him.

Far from the shade of a familiar tree.

Far from the touch of a familiar hand.

Far from the comfort of a favorite bed.

A high-intake, crowded animal control facility is stressful to any dog - especially a senior.

This handsome senior should be by the side of someone treasured, rather than alone in a stark kennel run, surrounded by barking dogs and unfamiliar voices."

SADLY ~ California is a HIGH KILL place for any animals, be it dog, cats, etc. This is not a place I am close to and don't have time to help out for this dog, hope this gets exposure and help! So many homeless creatures and so many needless deaths!

Governor Brown took away a time frame for these Pets in Shelters, Hurts my heart!

Hope this guy can help Sarge-

Patricia Day TenEyck Executive Director at Police Activities League of Greater Portland
I have written to Westside German Shepherd Rescue of Los Angeles offering to adopt Sarge if they can assist with pulling him from the shelter and getting him vetted to travel north (I am in Portland, OR.) Hopefully they will be able to help, and I will keep people updated in case this is not successful and he is still in danger. Penny, thank you for positing this and for everything else you do for the dogs.

I really hate to read story a like this. Our epileptic, wonderful and beautiful Eskie lived to be 14 1/2, and succumbed to cancer, not the epilepsy that had plagued him since he was 2 years old. When will people understand that these old guys, when taken care of can live very long and happy lives?

Please forward everyone - till we find someone to help him! My adored and wonderful German Shepherd lived a long, happy and wonderful life till she was 15 - this boy could easily have many more years of health and happiness and love his family loyally and well - forward Michelle's plea please!!

Sure he's aggressive, he's scared to death. He's been with the same owner for 12 years. Now he's behind bars, alone and petrified. I would growl too. There are many rescues like costal German Shepard rescue in san Diego who work with these types of dogs. It's not a good idea to post labels such as Deemed Aggressive and alert so many great possible homes. Give the guy a chance, geeze.

So I got to this late. Thank Goodness my daughter was looking over my mail for me. ..Okay my brother Joey just called the shelter and they told him that this sweet ole guy is not "deemed" for adoption. They also told him that even a reescue needs to evaluate him beforre they will allow this ole guy to be taken. My brother is pissed right now. Don't worry we are not giving up..

Has this so-called "shelter" (aka animals dumping ground before killing hell-hole) considered this dog may be showing "aggression" due to physical and mental stress!? A twelve year old animal is going to suffer a range of set-backs in their late life if not properly cared for, never mind the fact that plain old "old age" sets in.

He may be suffering from arthritic pain or a toothache. He may be mentally distraught over the noises and the smells of the horrific dungeon he is in, not to mention that fact that he has been abandoned and facing a potential DEATH SENTENCE.

THIS MAKES ME FURIOUS!!!! LET PATRICIA HIRE SOMEONE TO DO AN EVALUATION ON THE DOG SO SHE CAN TAKE HIM!!! HOW DO WE CONTACT HER?

Send a Green Star to Milkah Savage.

Sending a Green Star is a simple way to say "Thank you"

You cannot currently send a star to Milkah because you have done so within the last week.

Hi Michelle.. I got your message. And I called both shelters..Orange County and Ssn Diego..Sadly both places do not have an operator just a voice mail. I left urgent messages with all the information they need. I even told both shelters I will pay whatever it takes to get this ole boy out of the shelter and into a rescue.I have my daughter, Sadona writing emails to the shelters for me because Im ay work. I pray we can get something done before it's to late. Oh and my brother drove over 3 hours to the carson shelter and he was told " that the dog will not be adopted out on any terrms". .
As soon as I hear anything I will let you know Michelle A.S.A.P. And you as well please let me know.

Sorry, Veronica C. I disagree with you about the no high kill shelter for any animal. There are too many 2 legged criminals sitting in jail breathing the same air as these poor innocent 4 legged animals who never hurt anyone. To wit my ex-husband who stabbed our son and raped and murdered our 12yr. old daughter, still sitting in jail these 22 long years. Why not a high kill shelter, for folks like him? Oops, sorry, jails too full, today is the day you meet your maker! Poor old Sarge and all the other animals could be watched over by the prison guards freed up by this move.

I just sent this urgent email to the German Shepherd Rescue of Southern California. I believe they have locations in Burbank and Tahachipi. Here is the contact info. I found one more rescue that I am going to email quickly, then have to go. I never received word back from either Coastal Rescue office but received your comment on one of them being "out of the area," which I think is BS. If you are a rescue, you drive to the location and help. Period. Anyway, I'm hearing in comments that Sarge's brother was turned in with him and that they have until Monday---which Monday, I don't know. It's Monday tomorrow so we don't have much time. I also know Sarge had a Facebook page but the link at the Examiner was dead, so I couldn't access it. Please get back to me on developments. At the very least, one of these rescues should step up and get us in touch with a facility that has the time and resources to act now for these two dogs. Michelle

gsrescue@gsrescue.org.

You can call us at the Burbank facility during our adoption hours of Saturday and Sunday from 1-5PM. Our Burbank number is
818-558-7560

Please leave a message if no one is available. We receive dozens of calls daily and do our best to return them all. If you are calling do adopt please fill out an online application first.
During the week please call the Tehachapi number at 661-822-7260

You can always write us a letter and send it to:

German Shepherd Rescue
417 N. Moss Street
Burbank, CA 91502

We at the Care2.com animal welfare site are desperately trying to locate a rescue that will vouch for two german shepherds brothers
turned in at the Carson facility of Gardena Animal Control. For reasons unknown to us, the animal control staff has deemed one of
the dogs "Sarge" aggressive and will not allow release of the dog until an evaluation by a rescue is made. We believe Sarge and his
brother deserve a chance.

Already one rescuer from Washington state has been turned down; others who have called have not been given permission to adopt Sarge
and his brother due to their assessment. Sarge may be suffering from arthritis or toothache; in all likelihood the mental stress of abandonment
and the unfamiliarity of the kennel is taking its toll. We believe the staff needs to allow these possibilities when taking the temperament of an
animal into consideration before euthanizing it. Sarge is twelve; the age of his brother is unknown. We don't want to see these dogs die at a high
kill shelter without proper evaluation and consideration.

Several of us have already contacted Coastal German Shepherd Rescue in San Diego and Orange County with limited to know response.

PLEASE HELP US HELP RESCUE THESE TWO BEAUTIFUL DOGS. WE KNOW RESCUES ARE FULL AND FUNDS ARE LIMITED, BUT
THERE HAS TO BE SOMEONE FROM YOUR FACILITY OR ANOTHER YOU KNOW OF THAT CAN COME OUT TO EVALUATE THESE
PRECIOUS BEINGS AND FIND THEM AT LEAST A FOSTER RESCUE UNTIL A PERMANENT SANCTUARY CAN BE FOUND!

Please contact me if you or another rescue you know of can help Sarge and his brother! Thank you!

Hi All...
Ok here what I have..My brothers Joey and Rick went to try and see Sarge. They were told "due to his agressive nature, he has been placed away from people and dogs". They didn't give up, Joey was able to talk to a volunteer employee who was kind enough explain to him that" Sarge isn't agressive, she believes he is just sacred. He has had three evaluations and according to her he's a sweet ole guy. She said he was brought in with another male dog but didn't think they were related. Now Sarge will have another evaluation and if deemed suitable to be around other dogs he can than and only than be released to a resuse. Sadly the shelter stated that under NO CIRCUMSTANCES can he be adopted. I can't VERIFY this, but my brother was told he is not slated to be killed Monday. Again I can't VERIFY .
So due to this I have contacted a friend of mine who is a vet in Beverly Hills. And him and I will go to the shelter tomorrow and she if we can't do something.
I contacted GCGSR and was informed someone would call me back as well as written an emial.
Sorry I don't have better news, but Im going to continue to do all I can for theese ttwo angels.

Will someone please take this dog into their home. Why leave him to die, just because of his age. That's just like putting an old man or women to sleep just because they are old. It's not right, what this kill shelter is doing. How in the hell can anyone go to sleep at night after giving an innocent animal the needle? I'm truly hoping for a rescue for Sarge. If that dam shelter want to put someone to sleep, put those to sleep that hurt, torture, and mistreat animals and kill other humans for money, purchase.

Good Day all...
Well I have NO better news as of yet. Many of you wanted to know why Sarge just be keep taken home? The reason is the shelter has deemed him unadoptable :due to him beig agressive. So NO-ONE can get near him at this point. I will be sending my brother Joey along with Vet Specialist Chad Johnson to the shelter as soon as it opens. Sadly the shelter is not open until 12:00am..and Sarge does not appear on the adoptable list. As soon as I have any information I will update everyone.
Anyone else who has any information please update as well
Ths is where Sarge is at:
Carson Shelter is located at 216 W. Victoria St. Gardena, Ca 90248

The dog's trust has to be earned. It's going to take time. Would they put a human to sleep just because OF HIS AGE? Probably so if they had the power. I do hope and pray, someone will rehab this dog. It's possible and can be done. Give him time, instead of the needle.

Okay everyone...
An update on Sarge...Due to all the attention directed towards Sarge "HE WILL NOT BE EUTHANZIED". Believe we can thank my brother Joey and daughter Sadona for placing the heat on the Shelter. There has also been money placed on the books for Sarge so he is safe for now. I spoke with a very kind man named Chris 310-523-9566 and he told me that under NO circumstances will Sarge be allowed to be adopted due to the "AGRESSIVE TAG" placed on him. HE can only "GO TO A RESCUE". Im just breathing a sigh of relief that Sarge is safe for now. This is where I need others help.
Please help find this Ole Angel a rescue. Lets not let him fall through the cracks. Lets not be like "out of sight out of mind".
Okay Im at work and being a Doctor I can't hide for too long :*)
Hugs and Love to you ALL

I HAVE GOOGLED THREE RESCUES IN CALIFORNIA AND HAVE NOT HEARD FROM A SINGLE ONE BY EMAIL. I AM A "PUBLIC SERVANT" AS IT'S LABELED AND WORK DURING THE DAY LIKE MILKAH. WE NEED THE HELP OF ALL OF YOU TO CALL THE RESCUES I POSTED ABOVE IF YOU HAVE THE TIME AVAILABLE AND VOUCH FOR THIS DOG. WE SIMPLY CANNOT DO IT ALL.

ALSO, TAKE SOME TIME TO GOOGLE OTHER RESCUES EITHER IN CALIFORNIA OR OTHER STATES. I'VE HEARD OF DOGS BEING TRANSPORTED INTERSTATE UNDER CIRCUMSTANCES LIKE THESE, BUT AGAIN....IT IS GOING TO TAKE MORE THAN TWO PEOPLE TO SAVE SARGE. IF YOU ARE AVAILABLE DURING BUSINESS HOURS, HAVE ACCESS TO A PHONE AND CAN SPARE A LITTLE TIME, CALL THE RESCUES ABOVE AND ASK THEM TO TAKE HIM!!! IF THEY CAN'T ASK FOR ACCESS TO SOMEONE WHO CAN!

I agree with Michelle...We NEED EVERYONE'S HELP.... Sarge is safe for now but the only way we can keep him that way is to have a rescue pick him up...PLEASE HELP Michelle and I..we both work long hours during the day and don't get home until late. PLEASE don't make all that has been done for Sarge be for not !!!!!......

I just sent out a plea to two more Southern California rescue groups for German Shepherds. Still waiting to hear from Milkah for any new news or updates.

If you are a Facebook member, please visit the thread for Sarge the German Shepherd and share comments and updates. I am not on FB, so am unable to view the posts. Also, the link provided at Examiner.com above for his FB thread was dead the other day, so couldn't get to it.

Milkah: Go to Facebook and see the comments on Sarge at his thread. I just got this:

Victoria Stewart: "It appears he is still there; however, with the rescue being a no show I am worried about him tomorrow. I dont understand how a rescue could make a commitment but then change their mind. I feel helpless being so far away. Why is this guy continuously failed. Wont someone go get him. He will be your best friend."

Two commenters at his thread said something about a rescue committing to coming to his aid and not showing up. Please have your daughter or someone who has a FB account fill in the blanks on this. It sounds like a rescue was going to come to his rescue then bailed out!!!

Also this post from FB

Victoria Stewart: "So looks like rescue did not show again. Does anyone know what happened? I am speechless that this would happen twice to this guy. I see a kind soul in that face who does not understand why the people he has been loyal to have not been kind to him. Please God help this boy."

We need to find out which rescue was supposed to pick him up and why they didn't show! This makes me furious!

I would happily give a few dollars to a rescue to help them look after Sarge - and I am sure most of us here would just to relieve the pain in our hearts! Would that help a rescue to commit to helping Sarge? I tried looking at the Millan Foundation which I believe is in the same sort of area (I am looking at this from far away) who say they want to rescue and rehabilitate dogs but couldn't make any headway.

From what Milkah and Michelle say (may blessings be heaped upon them and their families) it seems to have been as usual - someone has been nervous or scared of the dog - so the dog has reacted perfectly normally with a 'stay away' growl or a series of barks and immediately been tagged as 'aggressive'. Even if a dog has been aggressive - that doesn't mean that he can't be rehabilitated with calmness and care. Unfortunately we will have to get the alarmed human to rethink their ideas first before we can make much progress - dogs are sooooo much easier to deal with!

I agree with most. The dog can be rehabilitated, just like people can be, the dog can be too. People are so quick to give an animal the needle if he or she doesn't fit in. Why? do we do this to people? so the animals have a right for rehab as well as a normal life for crying out loud. I wish I were in charge, there would never be such a place such as this place wanting to put him down and I would get rid of all and any animal kill shelter and abuse shelter. People are MONSTERS who have no regards for animals. If you treat them as such, you cannot be trusted as a rotten human being.

Thanks for the update Michelle!!!! I recieved a phone call from Gloria at the shelter where Sarge was. She said all the atttention and money to provide for him made his rescue possibel. I must tell you while I had my blue-tooth on listening to the message I was crying like a baby. To know this angel is rescued and safe just keeps my faith in humans. ..Mcihelle Thank you so much for all you did...Big Hugs,,,,Now let's do a :HAPPY DANCE"....

Commentt from Rising Dove Rescue:
We didn't rescue them ! We worked them & actually we found out about the the younger shepherd from Karen Barnes from Westside GSR 'she assessed sarge so she deserves the Kudos:) along with all the calls and attention brought to Sarge is what saved him.

So again I say "WE DID IT....NOW HAPPY DANCE FOR SARGE" !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You know, it's a sobering business, animal welfare. Just as I was reading on Facebook that Sarge and Bro found a rescue, and right after I called and found out Canela was adopted, I found a link on Facebook that took me to a collage of photos of over 20 cats and kittens that will be euthanized tomorrow morning at 6 am.

They were all sizes, shapes, ages and colors....some kittens, some juveniles....others full grown. All healthy looking....but here's the clincher. In all of their photos, all of them looked scared. Some had their ears back, others were hunkered down in their cage. It wasn't just their body language....I saw FEAR in each and every one of their eyes.

Then I read a terrifying article about the ASPCA and how they send cats back to NYC shelters to be euthanized if the animal poses a disease threat or for some reason does not meet their criteria. I read about how they are a corporation motivated by money and that they train their people and other shelters to buy into an anti-No-Kill philosophy. And it kind of makes sense, doesn't it? If huge money-making machines like the ASPCA and PETA stop receiving funds for protecting cats and dogs from euthanasia, a huge piece of their pie goes away. Something to think about.

Recently Best Friends has been posting NKLA posters all over town....."No Kill Los Angeles." It's a tall order and seems almost impossible.....but when I become involved with rescues like Sarge's and Canela's.....and when I see the palpable fear in the eyes of felines like the ones set to be needled tomorrow in a NYC "shelter"
it makes the No Kill Nation philosophy an imperative rather than a heartfelt desire. We simply cannot continue to call ourselves a civilized nation of conscious citizens whilst healthy, socialized, worthy animals suffer and die in facilities across the country in the millions every year.

It has to stop. Let's make it happen.

I feel the same Michelle...It seems that when one is saved another one takes the place. Saving our angels is indeed important and You and I must continue fighting for them. My dear friend, remeber there are only 24 hours and we can only do what we can. I will never give up on our angels and will continue to do all I can. I have been fighting for 5 years to stop "high kill" shelters. But sadly my wheels have just been spinning. I have also been working hard to make people aware of the way it is unnecessary to use animals in medical experiments.
I will never stop standing u for our four legged angels. Anytime you need me or my help, I am here for you.

And yes it has to stop.....Lets make it happen

There's a giant pink elephant in the room that everyone continually ignores. I searched for the words "breeder" and "puppy mill" here and found zero matches. Until they are stopped and made to rectify the problems they've created, animal rescue will continue to be unspeakably overwhelming, only a small fraction of dogs & cats able to be saved, by heartbroken, stressed-out people whose lives are dedicated to cleaning up the mess created by greedy slobs who continually bring more dogs & cats into this world. THE BREEDING HAS GOT TO STOP... someone from one of these hugely wealthy orgs. has got to zero in on this problem and go at it like a laser and get these horrible tragedies ended.
