URGENT! STOP CALIFORNIA FISH & GAME FROM KILLING MOTHER BEAR IN OJAI! Petition | California Department of Fish and Game: Give Th

The CA Dept. of Fish & Game plans to capture and euthanize one of our very few local black bears after a minor attack on a woman who came too close to the bear and her cub while walking her dogs. Like all good moms, the bear was protecting her baby. HELP!

Signed - I am so bloody sick of all this cruelty - if a human smacks someone does he/she get the death sentence, then why because a bear who was protecting her young get the death sentence. I am truly convinced that these people are brainless.

Donnaa D. (13)

I agree Leslene, she shouldn't have had her dog so close to the mum bears habitat! if i had been this brainless, i'd have at least kept my mouth shut, and just got treatment quietly.
all females regardless what species, will protect her young, and therefore this bear is faultless, Bless Her!!!

I signed but I don't have much faith they will protect her because she has attacked no matter what caused it. Amateur campers/hikers cause so much trouble.

while i feel sorry for this lady,i have watched black bear cams and read alot about them-they are basically non agressive towards humans-she was just protecting her cub-the cub would be without its mother . I do hope they change their minds and let this bear continue to be with her cub, i hope alot of people sign this petition before its too late.

Noted and signed. I also sympathize with the woman BUT she obviously had her dogs too close to the mama bear's young. If sh'es going to walk in "wildlife areas" then she should be aware of the wildlife. It sounds like the mama bear did not maul this woman so she was just being warned away from the area. Thanks so much, Michelle.

This is so not right. When will public agencies act with common sense and logic. I am sure the agency thinks it is just easier to kill the bear and be done with it, but people should be required to behave in a manner that doesn't threaten the bear. The bear poses no threat. It was the woman who was the threat to the bear.

S&N, thank you. Killing seems to be a favourite activity in the USA. After whales and dolphins, it's now a mum's turn. She was just protecting its cub. Why not euthanize the lady who was responsible for going too close to the bear and its cub. What's more, she was with her dogs. I'd like to know if the bear will be killed or not. This is a shameful case, anyway.

It is my firm belief, that if people go and live in the areas where the wild predators live, then what they get is what they deserve. I rescue cats, I am sometimes in a hurry, I get scratched and bitten when I am. My point being that the cats are doing what comes naturally in their territory, if I am intruding on them then I must expect that they have the right to defend themselves. Same with the bears. My sympathy is with the mama bear.

uh, kinda weird that in CA we are overturning hunting bears by using dogs, and this woman wants a bear killed. Dogs/Bears....bad combination. Given a chance, my dogs would gladly eat the mailman. Small wonder mama bear was freaking out.
The woman was lucky the bear wasn't showing the cubs how to take down humans.

What in the heck was that lady doing walking her dogs in bear country? She was in the bear's territory, not the other way around. The bear was just doing what most mothers do, protecting her baby when she thought it was being threatened. She should not be killed for protecting her baby.

Thanks so much Michelle---gladly signed~~~~This momma bear should NOT be punished for protecting her baby----when people are in animal territory-it's THEIR home they are invading and must show the animals RESPECT and behave accordingly~~~ This bear could have easily killed this woman if that was her intent. Why do people have to kill everything they are afraid of? The bear was afraid for her cub, but she showed restraint. show compassion, people can not control everything in nature without destroying it. Woman and 3 dogs were on bear's turf, so they needed to show respect for the bears.

Signed. Life is allegedly sacred. Yet humans destroy and confiscate habitats upon which animals depend for survival. Then, inexplicably and guiltlessly, humans kill when the animals take action to defend their young or to survive. We humans don't deserve the beauty of life if the solution to all our issues is to kill it.

Signed, Michelle. I live in "Black Bear Country" and every spring I lose something to them, this spring especially so with two very clever cubs (Fish & Wildlife agent said about 16 - 18 months) breaking into my secured garage to get to bird seed. I invented some new "4-letter words" during a 2-week period dealing with the 2nd cub hanging around after the first one was caught in a trap and taken to a remote area and released and it was never caught In the meantime, quite a few unopened bags of expensive gourmet bird seed grabbed and carried and scattered all over my back yard in the bushes, two hanging feeders (too high for me to take down) were destroyed, several ornamental shrubs destroyed when my dogs chased the one cub and treed him/her and one metal garbage can with dents in it from teeth marks, but nothing serious. I'm lucky, and so were my dogs. I made the evening news, in the process, LOL!

The agent who came here with the trap said I did everything "right" and sometimes bears just become too unafraid of humans and become a nuisance, as this seemed to be the case. As he said, it wasn't the bears fault, nor mine, but something I was going to have to deal with until more natural food for the bears grew as spring progressed. They wake up from a long hibernation and are starving. Much easier to raid bird feeders, even if inside a secured building, than forage for scarce berries. I was very relieved when the agent told me that #1 was released in thick forests closer to the mountains and hoped we'd get #2 before some trigger-happy neighbor did. Momma apparently had just tossed both out of the den and was interested in being re-bred, as Black Bears mate every two years.
