Animals  (tags: Animal Welfare, Animal Cruelty, Wildlife, Bears, Ojai Bear Will Be Killed If Found, INJUSTICE! )

- 789 days ago - latimesblogs.latimes.com
Game wardens with the California Dept. of Fish & Game will attempt to capture the bear that attacked a 50-year-old woman Friday morning in Ojai. If they are successful the bear will be euthanized. "Public safety is our No. 1 priority," say the agents.

Thanks Michelle. Too many people in this world encroaching on what little space we've left for earth's other creatures. It's time we rein our population in!

I tell you this animal cruelty thing is having a huge impact and effect on my thinking and on my life. What in God's name is wrong with these people - all they know is kill, kill and kill. I don't even want to be on this earth anymore - that way i won't have to know about things like this. Here in Cape Town a man slit a puppy's throat, skinned it and ate it!!! And no doubt with our idiotic laws the bastard will get off. Something has to be done for our animals, and the time is now. She has a right to live, same as us, maybe these bastards don't have enough work for their hands - they should go and round up the monstrous humans that rob, rape, plunder and murder and kill them - they will be doing the world a favour.

There is no guarantee to find that particular bear.Going to kill all brown females with cubs??? The bear could have killed her and her dog easily. It did not.In my mind it is a great bear. She protectec her cub and got her point across without killing anyone.

Very sad. The law doesn't protect animals at all, it seems. I think the woman deserves to be euthanised for making such a fuss about nothing, knowing it would resuilt in the death of an innocent mother bear who only wanted to protect her cub. It is ridiculous to take the animal's life when she did nothing except knock the woman over. The woman didn't even want or need any medical attention. Mind you, she might need medical attention if I got my hands on her now!

Feeling sorry for the Bear.

"For every action there is a reaction. According to the law of karma, if we cause

pain and suffering to other living beings, we must endure pain and suffering in

return, both individually and collectively. We reap what we sow, in this life and

the next, for nature has her own justice. No one can escape the law of karma".

I DON'T AGREE. It's the easy way out. The woman's injury wasn't serious and she had approached the bear.
The bear could have injured the woman much more seriously, but it did not. It was just protecting its cub. What's going to happen to that cub when its mother has been killed? I suggest killing the woman who approached the bear with her 3 (!!!?) dogs knowing it might be dangerous.

Stupid California officials. The woman was infringing on the bears territory. The bear was only protecting it's cub. Animals are getting crowded out of their territory by people and the animals have to suffer with with their life.

This is JUST WRONG! Like it was the bear's fault that her species is losing out to "development" and gets stressed out when people won't give them their space. We need more public education efforts to help us coexist with wild animals in such a way that animals don't get killed!

I agree with Joy Mcronald, shoot her not the bear. She was invading the bear's home and it was protecting it's cub. Call for a recall of the officials that are making this decision. In my state, a man was attacked by a bear - it was his fault - and they killed 3 bears thinking they got the bear that did this to him. None of the 3 bears were the attackers. They lost their lives for no reason.

Mitchell D. (132)
Friday October 26, 2012, 6:42 pm
I think it would be a shame to go after a bear that apparently was feeling its own space invaded.
The woman was out there with THREE dogs, which are not traditional friends of bears, and while I am sorry that she was hurt, I'm not in favor of killing the bear.

I read the article. It sounds like the mother bear was protecting her cubs. The stupid lady scared them so the mother had to do what was right for her cubs. If they kill the mother bear, they leave the cubs without their mother. They lady just got scratches on her wrist and now she wants the mother bear killed??? WTF???

Done, TY!! Kill the bear? No justice on any level here!! If the bear had been a person that attacked her, no one would be hunting them to kill?! Even if they found them they'd only end up with a slap on the wrist to go out and keep on attacking people. But, this is an animal, sadly a mama bear who was only protecting her baby and she gets the death penalty?, the woman didnt even need medical attention, wt-heck???? This is just wrong, sad and downright heartbreaking!!!! :(

Diane L. (110)
Friday October 26, 2012, 11:20 pm
This is ridiculous. If the bear (and that probably is NOT a Black Bear, but a Grizzly depicted in the photo).........if the bear was a sow with a cub, then the attack was "not unprovoked" as stated by Fish & Wildlife. If the woman was not harmed...........said she did not seek medical attention, then it's really asinine to say the bear is likely to attack again. This woman was in the bear's territory, surprised a female with a cub, and they want to kill the sow for defending her baby?

First California's Fish & Wildlife sends their chief agent on a safari to Idaho where he shoots and kills a cougar because it wasn't legal to do so in California, and now this?

Where is the Catch and Released into the wildernes, and what I thought reading the artical the bear had a cub with her now would she not be protecting her babby like anyother Female would, and if she does it again then do what ya gottah do. Bear numbers are way down anyway so killing this one won't help, and she will raise her cub on top of it all. Sorry about the lady though she had a dreadful experence.

Signed and noted. The bear was right, the woman wrong. Anyone who walks their dogs in bear territory can't expect the bear not to attack especially if she has a cub to defend! The woman should be fined and the bear allowed to go free and raise her young. I can't believe how stupid some people can be!

The bear has more empathy than anyone else involved in this incident. She could have easily killed the woman and her dogs...but didn't. Does anyone care what will happen to her cub if she's killed? This is awful.

Very angrily noted. I cannot believe they had the temerity to state that it was an unprovoked attack. We are talking about a mother bear with a cub who was frightened by the approach of a human with 3 dogs! What was the mother supposed to do, not try and protect the cub! Good lord, people are so incredibly ignorant. You just simply do not take your animals for a walk near a known wild animal area! It is a National park which means it is home to hundreds of different animals, any of which would have done the same thing if they felt threatened. What ever happened to common sense. Our wildlife has so little room left to live in, it is no wonder they are attacking humans. We are encroaching on their land!

She's a Momma Bear that was letting this woman & dogs know that she has a Baby to Protect. If she meant real harm... this woman & her dogs would be dead! Let this Momma & Baby Live in Peace! It's a National Park for God's Sake! What do you Expect when all we do is Take, Take. Take and there's No Where Else for the Wildlife to go. Move to the Mountains and Kill the Cougar & Wolf for wandering into your backyard, which happens to be their front yard! Wake Up World & Stop the Senseless Killings!

It's okay for humans to go in the woods and murder bears and other creatures, but how dare a bear defend it's cub or territory. What a race of s.o.b.'s we humans are.
If the bear is to die then I wish it had finished the job on the woman. It would seem a bit more fare.

I accidentally got between a bear and her cub in Alaska while taking pictures of caribou near Mount McKinley (Denali). Naturally the mother charged and I bolted fearing for my life. I never knew how fast bears can run. I got a save distance away from the cub and mother bear gave me a last angry look and turned back to her cub. I remember yelling back at her 'Sorry, you big monster TeddyBear'. I invaded their territory.
This lady should have known better, she is a local. Why should the bear be euthanized for defending her cub? Now I ask that woman, should her dogs be euthanized if they attack or scatch another person? There you are.
