From the article:

The reasons that pets are surrendered to animal control facilities are many...moving, baby on the way, dog is too big, no time, digs, barks, or perhaps this...going on vacation.

On Monday, a shelter volunteer captured a heartbreaking video of a dog who was surrendered to the San Bernardino, Calif., city facility because his owners were going on vacation.

Sad enough that the dog is being tossed aside because of a vacation - but the video of the dog's terror at being left at the facility, makes it worse.

The owner was warned that the dog, named "Oso," would be killed if a rescue could not be found - but that dire warning did not deter the owner from leaving Oso behind.

What happened to Oso this week happens everyday across the nation.

In case anyone wonders if dogs "know" what is happening when they are surrendered to an animal control facility, this video of this dog's terror serves as a visual answer.

The betrayal, fear and sadness are readily evident in every portion of this dog's body.

Oso has been labeled "rescue only" due to his fear.

Please share this two-year-old dog's information with the hopes that he is rescued before it is too late.

URGENT! Oso Was turned in at the high-kill San Bernardino facility on Monday because---get this---HIS FAMILY IS GOING ON VACATION!!! The agony and terror the dog experiences as he is being walked to the facility doors is captured on video and says it all: BETRAYED AND ABANDONED.

Due to his extreme fear and anxiety, they have labeled him "Rescue Only!"

Even when facility workers told the owner the dog may be euthanized, it didn't matter to them! They gave him a hug goodbye and walked away!!!!!

Please all you Facebook members and social networkers! Get the word out for OSO! Contact Southern California no-kill fosters and rescues to help this poor boy! His

Facebook link is here:

My name is RESCUE ONLY.

I am a male, cream Chow Chow mix.

The shelter staff think I am about 2 years old.

I have been at the shelter since Jun 22, 2013.

This information is less than 1 hour old.

Absolutely dreadful - these selfish b's should go on an Animal Abuse Register - poor chap deserves so much better than to live with these low-lifes, no wonder he is nervous. Pray he finds a good forever home soon. But it happens in the UK too - often owners don't even bother to give their pets to a shelter when they go on holiday, just tie them up somewhere out of sight or dump them. RSPCA said today they had a 34% increase in homeless dogs just over the last year! So so sad.

This is the update given at the FB site. DO NOT MISREAD THIS! HE IS NOT RESCUED!

Almost Home has committed to taking Oso when there is a qualified foster who steps forward in Southern California or Lake Havasu Arizona. They need to make a home visit of those fosters who apply. The application information is below. God knows there are CRIMINAL FOSTERS OUT THERE! Pray someone SANE AND GODLY takes in this dog either as a foster or a forever home!

PLEASE KEEP NETWORKING! Google Chow rescues in the California and Arizona areas and copy/paste in the link to my story and the additional information. All it takes is a computer and some quality minutes to get the word out!

Great news posted a little while ago by Val Israel! Almost Home Animal Rescue will take Oso with a qualified foster in So Cal or Lake Havasu, AZ.

Go to their website to fill out an app ASAP so they can set up the home check http://www/

Please help Almost Home get Oso to a hero and open your home to Oso.

Let's bring back his smile! Pledges will NOT be collected if Oso is rescued by Almost Home. They ask that the pledges be used to help other dogs...but don't redirect your pledge until Oso is safe and we know who has him. I hope this makes sense (I'm so tired!). Thanks!

Why would you take your dog to a high kill shelter because you're going on vacation? These people have no conscience when it comes to their beautiful dog! Shame on them- they will get their heartlessness back. So glad to hear the news above but he isn't safe until they can actually find a foster! I hope that a very sweet and qualified foster comes forward soon to foster Oso! Thanks Michelle for this update. Please keep us updated or anyone else on finding a foster for Oso so that we know he is completely safe!
God Bless him!

This despicable sob needs to be beaten to a pulp - how horrible for this poor dog to have once had a home and then to just get dumped somewhere with people you don't even know. I can only imagine what must be going through his mind. It is unforgivable. I would get hold of his bloody owner and make sure he has a fatal accident. Poor Oso, and then to make matters worse they dumped him because they were going on holiday!!!! This is just disgusting. I hope this poor dog finds the best owners ever and that his life will be one of peace, happiness and love. May his previous owners burn in hell for what they have done to him.

I cannot get this out of my mind. The young man is not really going on vacation. He has to leave town right now for some serious thing and he doesn't have time to research shelters. Just before he has to leave he hugs and kisses the dog. He could have left it in the street to get run over or caught by dog fighters. No one is perfect. I just know vacation is not the real reason. G-d bless poor Oso.

Shame on us, the compassionate set. I don't think for a second the young man is going on vacation. He is some kind of trouble. Instead wasting energy denigrating him let's help Oso find a forever home. Let's pray for the young man to get out of trouble and to learn to be responsible.. He could have dumped the dog in the street to be run over, starve, be beaten, or caught by dog fighters. He kissed his dog and hugged it. I know if he could keep Oso he could. What ever happened to there for the grace of G-d go you or I?

I can 99% guarantee you there is no vacation involved. They probably had to flee before jail or bill collectors. I highly doubt anyone would specifically put a dog in a kill shelter instead of finding a no-kill shelter unless they were running from something.

Could it be that this person does have a heart? It may have taken everyone stepping up and defending Oso and caring about him to make the owner wake up and realize that he screwed up. Yes according to the recent FB posts the facility allowed the owner to reclaim OSO this am.
I only wish the dog had been picked up ny someone else before this happened. What a BS stunt to
pull on this poor dog. Imagine! Now it's time for the welfare community to continue setting their sites on homing
other death row dogs like Oso. There are THOUSANDS of them in line for the needle as I type. It's a tragic state ofaffairs. Thanks for all your supportive comments.

I could not be happy on a vacation without my girl no matter how good a boarding kennel is. People think I am silly not to go on holidays, but my girl was a not wanted any more pet and she would be devastated if I left her. Animals definitely have feelings - when i picke up my Baby from the shelter I had to bring her back 2 days later to be spayed or leave her there the 2 days - I couldn't leave her and she was so scared and mad that luckily they allowed me to go back with her as they sedated her - she got back at them - she crapped on the floor - anyway - we don't go out in the car much but she's OK with the wonderful vet we have and knows after 3 year that she is NOT going back to that "BAD" place.

Are these owners' so inconsiderate and inhumane to do such a thing. I'm sure there was a neighbour, friend or family that would have taken him in. People such as these, if you can even call them people should be put in a shelter. Do they not think that "Poor Otis" could not smell, see, feel? I just dont' believe how inhumane people can be. Unfortunately I am in Canada and "yes" some animals have to be put down. However for the most part the Humane Society keeps them for a long period of time for adoption before they even have to do such a thing. I have a dog myself "Milo" who is the love of my life. I dont' even know that I could put him in a Shelter where they would care for him while I had to go away. He is my "BEST FRIEND". Nobody could spoil him the way his Mommy does. The whole family feels the same way. The only circumstances that we would have to have him uthenized would be because he could no longer get up the stairs, see, hear whatever. Taking him to a Veterarian not a Facility and believe you me I would be crying my eyes' out both ways there and back. He would be buried in my backyard with a beautiful cross made by my Carpenter "Son". I just dont' understand how anyone could do such a thing, why get an animal in the first place. Its' disgusting to even hear this, my heart goes out to Otis. He is such a beautiful animal who I am sure is so full of love and compassion for his "owners" only to find that they dont' care about him to do such a thing. They dont' deserve a vacation, their vacation would be in a cage at a Shelter just like they have done to a "Friend" who loved them. I honestly do hope that he is found a home before his time is up. So sad....

This is absolutely unacceptable!! I work at Almost Home Animal Shelter and I can tell you from experience that dogs and cats are dropped off all through out the day by owners who are either to lazy to care for the animal or just decided they didn't want it anymore its heartbreaking and you never get used to it seeing what these animals go threw even in the best shelters is so sad they are depressed scared and sad we do everything humanly possible to keep them happy but an abandoned pet KNOWS its been abandoned this vacation bit really takes the cake if you cant afford boarding or a pet sitter then you cant afford a pet sharing

There is no way I could have any background knowledge on their circumstances or their decision making process. The idea that they went on "vacation" was communicated by the author at who wrote the article.

Again, I am just a messenger here at Care2 posting stories when I can on issues regarding animal welfare that I find urgent and important.

That said, I live in Southern California where there is a sizable population of Latino residents. I think it's safe to say the majority of shelters and facilities in So Cal....and California in general....are able to cater to Spanish speaking residents who bring their animals to shelters. "Vacation" in Spanish sounds almost identical to "vacation" in English, so I have no idea why the owner used the term or what it meant to him.

I also happen to believe that no matter what language is spoken, non-English speaking residents know that animal control facilities are places where animals go for adoption or euthanizing. If this family actually REALLY believed the shelter was a boarding facility and not an animal control facility then the onus was on the owner to do the proper research.

I kind of find it hard to believe in a San Bernardino County animal control facility no one speaks Spanish or has a translation available. The owner had to know what "kill" meant!?!? If not, well, learn the language and become a responsible pet owner!

At the end of the day, owners attach cultural values and attitudes to pet ownership. I don't know what the deal with this family was. I can't wrap my brain around any of it. I wish the dog had made it into the hands of someone with more....what's the word? Knowledge? Savvy? Trustworthiness? I just hope the dog is okay and the family never puts the poor creature through this kind of trauma again.

Noted. What a sad situation for this poor innocent dog!

Thank all of you who posted for caring about this victimized dog.

I had to calm down after watching this video. I am still shaking from the outrage of this cruelty. My god kennel him or ask someone to stop and check on him. Be responsible you took this dog . Dogs are not disposable items at your convenience, "he can smell the death" will be in nightmares tonight
Please let someone take this beautiful fella

The story of "Oso Blanco" the most notorious prison in the Carribean, and the birthplace of two of today's most famous prison gangs: "Asociacion Neta" and "Los 27" (aka los Insectos".

I'm in agreement with Gloria P. I don't think vacation was the REAL reason. I left the first part to my comment as perhaps he might of thought placing the dog there was to "save" it's life, maybe someone was after him and also would of killed the dog. Who knows, I just don't think it was vacation but I am glad the dog is out of the shelter. I just hope that it's fate doesn't end up badly.

This is horrible!! That damned vacation must have meant a lot to those non-caring subhuman beings!!! This is TRULY OUTRAGEOUS. In my opinion, even if the vacation was not the real reason, if they were caring people, they would have found a better place than this to surrender him. I live on the East Coast, so there is not a lot that I can do from here; however, I will send to all my Care2 friends in hopes that someone will open their heart and home to this precious fella, or try to help find him a loving home. Poor baby, I know he is so frightened, but if some good people adopt him, he will definitely be better off than where he was. God love his little heart~~he doesn't deserve this.

"Liz Senteney Here's what I'm hearing: They did NOT say VACATION, they said NEIGHBOR in SPANISH. Whoever took the video, I think misunderstood, attempting to translate. VECINA = neighbor, which could sound a lot like vacacion (vacation) I think someone made monsters out of the owners......"

Sadly noted and watched the video. But I'm glad I saw Ena's S. post saying that OSO was picked up by the faily. As it seems they were not going on vacation. Most propably it was something else they had to put OSO in the shelter...not a vacation.

I just want to say that whatever they meant, 'vacation', 'neighbor', whatever, it still does not change the fact they brought that sweet dog to a high-kill shelter, I can't even use the word 'shelter' for a place that kills innocent, healthy animals. It's a high-kill house of horror, as far as I'm concerned. That dog could have been put down, and for what?! For having the misfortune of having idiots for owners?! I wish someone else could have rescued Oso, instead of being handed over to the a-hole that dropped him there. Bless you, Oso.

I'm a bit confused about what's happened to Oso but I get the impression the person who dropped him off at the shelter picked him back up. Like Gloria P. I think there's more to the story than "going on vacation". I know our local shelter would not accept an animal on that basis and would question the person more intensely to try to find out what was going on. If someone has the $ to sport themselves to a vacation they have the $ to take their pet to a reputable kennel, or arrange for a trustworthy friend or relative to take care of the animal. There are no excuses. A pet is like a child and must be cared for.

I'm amazed at how many people ARE NOT READING the real story, but instead bashing the owners, who mistakenly thought their dog would be safe in the shelter. People, please read the UPDATES, before you start calling names and wishing ill on people who could possibly be innocent. I read the story, and I saw the video, and the owner seemed clueless, and did NOT act like he didn't give a damn about his dog. He hug and kissed it and seemed like he was also in distress. Unfortunately, and it has nothing to do with cultural differences, some people are just not smart enough to do the required research, especially if the people are in fear of governmental agencies or are facing a personal emergency. In a perfect world, yes, an owner would, should do the required diligence to find the best home for their pet, and made sure their pet would not end up in a high kill shelter. Unfortunately, we don't live in a perfect world, and life can get very complicated. I think it would be best to use our energy and knowledge to find homes for pets in danger of being euthanized, and not spend our time bashing people when we really don't know the whole story. Just my two cents.

So the whole story turned out as a big misunderstanding?! And the poor family was target of ranting and raving because of a rumour?! I'm sure Oso was happy to see his people again, but I'm not sure that he should be going back home with them! If they would dump him at this shelter once, what is to stop them from doing it again!

I hope these people learn to appreciate that a dog is not something to dispose of at whim. He is a devoted, faithful, forgiving being who will love you till the end.

Good luck little Oso! I wish you the best life possible!

Noted & posted on my Twitter page. I'm not a pet owner nor do I desire one. However, anyone who has one; it is their responsibility to ensure that the animal is healthy and cared for - NO EXCUSES. Going on vacation; couldn't he have found a kennel or a dog sitting business? Oh that costs money. Oso is a fine looking dog and deserves better. If you're moving and can't take your pet it is your responsibility to find a good home for the animal. I think all humane societies and other organizations such as the one mentioned in the article should have a fee of say $100.00 or more for these type of idiots.
I think all puppy mills should be shut down and all irresponsible owners tagged and a database created to log their names and addresses so they are never allowed a pet ever again.

That poor dog. My sister and her family went on vacation and my mom and I took turns "babysitting" the 2dogs and 4 cats.

My sister would NEVER have left if we hadn't been available to petsit. As you can imagine with 2 dogs and 4 cats you need someone there overnight with the animals. As it was, we had to call my sister and put her on speaker phone so the oldest dog would relax. The dogs were safe with us but they missed their family. The cat's of course are more "hey, as long as I have a lap to sit on and treats to eat, it's all good" :-) I can't believe these people would dump their 1 dog to go on vacation.

To me this dog is obviously not a member of the family. I worry for his safety and quality of life now. If they could stomach dumping him and then happily go on Vacation?? Cold Hearted people. I think bad publicity is the only reason they came back for poor Oso.

I am sorry for Oso...I hope these people appreciate how forgiving Dogs are. Unlike humans, dogs don't seem to know how to hold a grudge. They don't deserve the love of a dog.

I agree with you Esther, read the thread before you jump on. Read what Ena has offered. It was as I had said in my first comment, that Gloria had made it a point to say, this wasn't going on vacation. I said I think he put the dog there for it's safety. Not knowing what else to do. Please people it's all too easy to bash others when we don't know the full story to something.

Obviously there was more here than was offered in the beginning. The man spoke Spanish maybe he wasn't understanding it was a kill shelter, or what she was saying when the dog smelled death, or perhaps he didn't understand until he was talking to others on what he did and they told him what type of a place it was in his own language and he came back and got the dog.

Ravenna, we all make mistakes, we all learn from life, and a mistake learned from is what we all need to do. That you came back with your last comment shows a woman of good heart and the courage to admit when one errs in judgment. I personally appreciate that in another.

As Gina said there is always 3 sides to a story and I fully agree with that statement. As a society of instant everything we need to be careful to not pass judgment so quickly. Remember those two young men who the newspaper accused of being at the Boston Marathon and that were the bombers. The paper showed their faces and yet there was absolutely no truth in the matter to it. That could of lead to their death had someone with a loose trigger sought them out, so we need to be very careful on who and where we point our fingers.

I've stopped tracking, people are still not reading that this has been resolved and most likely was a terrible misunderstanding. Pains me to still see people bashing others when they don't know the full story and do not take the time to learn about it.

Turn your anger into action, help to bring about low or no cost spay and neuter programs to your area so that fewer dogs and cats are born when so many are in need of homes.

Before obtaining a pet, check at your local shelters, do not support puppy mills and the likes. Find ways of shutting down puppy mills and educate the public to go to open shelters to adopt animals in need of homes.

Offer your home as a Foster Home for people who are in temporary situations that may find themselves in a bad spot, like this man obviously was. People who suffer from floods, hurricanes, tornados, need temporary homes until they can figure things out.

Vacation heh? When you have animals, you take them with you or you place them in a reputable kennel or you have someone pet sit. If you can't do either then you don't have animals or you don't go on vacation. That's as simple as that! These people should be barred from having animals. I read that they reclaimed the dog. Honestly, I would not give the dog back to them. And I would try to find him a better home where people would love him and show loyalty to him. I was at one time unable to find a place to live because of no pets policy. I would have NEVER considered abandoning my dog and 2 cats..I was determined to live on the street with my dog and 2 cats...Stupid people!

I was rather shocked that one commented about how the person should be beaten to death and if she ran into him she would make sure that he had a 'fatal accident', charming do these people actually read what they say? In the case of actual animal abuse, there are laws re cruelty and jail terms hopefully for the more abusive cases. I realize that some get very emotional about things but talking about killing people? There are courts around to administer justice. I know some don't feel the courts do enough but if we all administered our own brand of justice we would have a rather chaotic society.

For those that do abandon a pet to go on vacation they should be banned from having any companion animals for life as if they were truly interested they could always get a friend to look in on the pet or take the pet to their friend's place or even board the companion animal.

I came back to revisit this story and clicked on the link, the page is updated stating that the owners reclaimed him, poor Oso.

Inexcusable! Outrageous! Despicable! Those people don't deserve any animals! Apparently they went to pick up Oso after their vacation... low lives! Hope they treat Oso kindly now but somehow I doubt it by their initial reaction. Praying for Oso...!

Just unbelievable - uncaring and pure evil. Think the owners have reclaimed him, but God help him is all I can think.

Noted & Shared. This is disturbing. A lot of people should not even be able to have animals. This makes me SO angry.
Thanks for posting Michelle.

I hope they won't dump Oso somewhere else !!! It looks to me they don't even care about him , poor dog :( , if we go for vacation I put my dog to kennels and before she went there I was doing research if those kennels are good and our friends look after my cat I will never do this to my pets , they are everything to me . If they had money for vacation then they should spent money on proper kennels for their dog ! Shame on them !! Selfish people !!!

Noted !! The video was highly upsetting, seeing the effect those smells had on OSO - I can well believe he could smell death through that grill ..... and the poor thing was terrified from that point on. Whatever the owners reasons, there is no way he should have left OSO there once he had seen the fear and trauma of his dog !! I just pray that whatever the reason was (neighbour or whatever) that this never happens to this beautiful dog again !
Thanks for the article Michelle - and others for the updates - relieved to know he was saved !!!

Sems this was a storm in a teacup. Oso's owners had thought he would be safe in the shelter. Their neighbours had threatened to kill the dog because of his barking. The owners retrieved Oso and took him home. I hope he gets some obedience training to teach him not to bark.

The threat to kill a dog for barking, and the actual likelyhood of being killed at the animal shelter is in no way -

" a storm in a teacup "

Why should any dog be taught not to bark at all, would any of us be happy in being denied our right to communicate

This decision to leave Oso, to allow them to go on vacation, will haunt his human guardians throughout eternity, if he is killed.

" What we do in life, Echo's in Eternity "

I have not had a vacation in my whole adult life, I could not bring myself to leave any of the beloved animals whom have / are sharing my life, in the care of other people they did not know.
