A blind, five-year-old German shepherd named "Boca," has been dealt a death sentence.

The dog, who has been noted as one of the shelter volunteers' favorites, was left at the Los Angeles County Animal Care and Control facility in Downey, Calif., by his owner on Oct. 12.

Frantic networking on Boca's behalf quickly took place and miraculously, the Downey Animal Control noted that he was safe on Nov. 11.

According to the facilty's Facebook page, Best Friends had indicated that they would take the German shepherd in, and that Boca would be seeing an eye specialist.

As the good news spread, all networking on Boca's behalf stopped and his Petharbor link was taken down.

Fast forward to Nov. 18 - Pat Gregoire, a volunteer photographer who helps to raise awareness for the dogs who are impounded, was notified that Boca was still homeless.

Worse yet she was told that he has no holds, no interested parties - essentially - nobody.

Gregoire called the facility and was notified that the rescue agency had "changed their mind." Why that change of mind was made is unclear.

What is known is that Boca is now basically invisible - and out of time.

Tragically, everyone who believed that the beautiful dog was safe, has stopped sharing his information. Adding to the confusion, on the Downey Animal Care Center Facebook page, Boca is still listed in the "adopted/safe" folder.

Even more confusing - today, Boca is listed as being kenneled at the Baldwin Park shelter, rather than the Downey facility.

The following was previously shared about Boca:

This volunteer and staff favorite walks beautifully on leash and follows your voice as he stays close to your side.

He is calm and because of his blindness he prefers slow introductions to other dogs. We think he will be good with children who understand that he can’t see and are mature enough not to surprise him.

Boca is a total sweetheart and will make a fabulous indoor pet and best friend for an individual or family living in a private home.

Please take a moment, once again, to network on Boca's behalf.

Horrible. What a bunch of screw ups! The rescue really should take this dog considering they really screwed up other opportunities that may have been in the works. Horrible that a Rescue could do such a thing. I hope Boca gets a reprieve. He deserves more time....also for all the other stupid human errors, none of which were his fault.

It is hard to understand why Best Friends in L.A would abandon this poor dog especially with his needs and when he is almost out of time! How could they do this- Best Friends of L.A. should be censured for their heartlessness! I will share with friends on social media and say prayers for beautiful Boca!

Lisa Lopardo Welch Miracle: GSD Network and Saving Paws German Shepherd Rescue in AZ have a plan for BOCA! They work with a WONDERFUL eye specialist, and will get him the help he needs. They have a great new facility and he can be in the house with their therapy dog as his buddy. They would have taken this dog prior, but the plan with the other rescue that fell through materialized before it happened. Please consider pledging to help with Boca’s pull/transport/ongoing care. Most of you have seen how this awesome rescue operates, they take lots of medical dogs, and the results are heartwarming! Boca will get the BEST of care, and there will be plenty of updates so you can follow his progress. Won’t you please consider helping BOCA? He should not be shipped across the country at this time! Let’s get him the help he needs with a rescue that is willing to VET HIM NOW, and to see if something can be done for his SIGHT. We will be on this first thing this morning – there is so much confusion, but we will sort out what needs to be done. CAN YOU HELP HIM? IT IS EASY. Post your pledge here, any amount. PLEASE SPECIFY THAT YOUR PLEDGE WILL BE PAYABLE TO SAVING PAWS AZ. You will only be asked to honor your pledge when he is out and you have freedom pictures. WON’T YOU PLEASE HELP BOCA?
some people sign the pledge to help with a small donation BOCA, this story is more than sad, but the love of the people towards this unfortunate guy is great.
Thank so much Michelle and also to many friend that fw this to me

This is so typical of too many shelters. They play God with these poor animals lives without doing everything possible to ensure their safety and happiness and then lie to the public about what's really going on. I'm crossing everything for Boca and hoping that one of the more responsible and trustworthy shelters can help out or better yet, a safe, happy, loving forever home is found for Boca. Thanks for sharing Michelle.

Boca is going to a PAWS shelter in Phoenix this Thursday. The Baldwin Park shelter found out he can see a little bit. A veterinarian dog eye specialist is going to see what she can do for his sight in AZ. He still doesn't have a home but he's going to no kill shelter. The people in California went out of their way to help Boca.

Michelle: Send a message to the rescue through their web in Internet. They all have. When I do not pay through Paypal I ask for an address to send a money order. As you were not pledging, they are not expecting you to honor nothing so you would be sending a donation. Remember to cover your check or money order in white paper to protect it from being noticed. Sometimes I pledge in FB with this condition and all the rescues have said yes. Not everybody wants to make their address public so they send you a PM and you make sure they understand your intention and that their address is protected and all is ok. Good luck!

Poor Boca - It is wonderful how the power of people can start sending messages out to each other on the social networks and get things turned around really fast. It just needs lots of support. I'm in awe of Care2 and all of you here. I cannot comment about Facebook as I don't use it, but it justifies this means to an end - sounds like Boca will live a full life now! That has to be a major victory from the power of the positive voice!

Never forget Oreo

The Death of 100,000 Animals

November 13, 2013 by Nathan J. Winograd

Today is the four year anniversary of the ASPCA’s killing of Oreo, an abused dog, who a No Kill sanctuary offered to save. After Oreo was killed, legislation was introduced in New York which would have made it illegal for shelters, including the ASPCA, to kill animals who rescue groups were willing to save. It was estimated that if the law passed, 25,000 animals a year would be saved. Ed Sayres, the former CEO of the ASPCA made it his personal mission to ensure that the law would not, killing it in the legislature every year. Since Oreo was killed, an estimated 100,000 animals who also had an immediate place to go, have also been killed. Instead of enjoying the second chances and loving new homes non-profits rescue groups would have guaranteed them, they are dead, their bodies rotting in New York State landfills.

This is hard to believe. All the money goes to war and none to respect this magnificent work of art which is our planet and all their species. Man in "modern society" is a dog's worst enemy and it seems of all other species including its own!!!
