Dancing bears will have a hole pierced through their lips, nose or palate and a chain or rope attached. No anaesthetic is used for this operation.Bears are gentle, private creatures. Please help us protect them and end the torment of bear dancing.

Noted! This quiet often happens when the bears are young and sometimes the pain is too great and they die. Oh yes. Disgusting. Why do they do this, so the people can get $$$$$

position is under control, 5 wild species are banned - lion, tiger, bear, panther & monkey. Few NGO comes forward with the proposal of rehabilitation of Kalenders & dancing bears with the financial help of International community where as PFA HARYANA played a key role towards motivation but I am sorry to say that these NGO's are fighting together because this became business for them to earn money... shame

Noted with disgust! I can't believe people could do this to an animal. It makes me furious. For the record, I don't like zoos, circuses or animals being forced to do anything contrary to thier nature.Greed is at the bottom of all of this hatefulness. It sickens me to see the exploitation of animals.

noted with absolute disgust! It breaks my heart to realize and think about the cruelty and suffering that these poor bears have to undergo daily! I am glad that the bears' owners are being convinced to release the bears and find more humane means to earn their livelihood. Is there a petition that we can start to send to officials in Afghanistan and India to protest these barbaric practice?

i am totally shocked to read of such cruelty being given to these poor creatures.i dont believe in any animal being tied or locked up. they should be allowed to live in peace the same as humans.

There is very little greed here it is more a case of scraping out an existence which is exacerbated by rich tourists. The sad part is that these people are usually the lowest caste, Kallandars and cannot find other work and are treated as substandard humans in their own country so sadly the poor bears suffer the brunt of the poverty and pay in the worst ways. Free the Bears Fund run by an Australian woman, Mary Hutton who was so appalled by the bears plight that she got up and did something about it,buys the bears from these people and helps them to secure other employment so they are happy to let their bears go and can still afford to feed their children etc.The bears have the horrible ropes removed and get to live out the rest of their lives in freedom in the bear sanctuary.I believe it is Mary's aim to free all the bears by 2010 or 2012, there are about 100 bears left to rescue. So if anyone here feels strongly enough to help the bears they can make a donation to www.freethebears.org.au. It costs about $1000 to save each bear and the owners are required to sign a contract to accept that they will not acquire any other bears. There are also annual and life memberships, merchandise and donations or volunteering to raise funds. Even donation of needed goods would be very helpful.
For the most part I blame the tourists, the rich mostly white westerners who pay and continue the barbaric torture of the bears. If there was no response to the bears these people would not bother to harness them. The governments of these countries have a lot of blame to carry also.
For the most part many of us living priveleged lives are sitting in judgement of these people who through no fault of their own are drowning in poverty and making ends meet the only way they know how. When I asked Mary Hutton if the people were happy to give up their bears she said mostly yes but that some were very attached to their bears and that they were like family to them.As horrific and abhorrent as the lives of dancing bears are I don't believe that these people treat them like this for cruelties sake as I am sure they don't really realise that it is cruel because it is all they know and the bears are their only means of survival so they probably care about them very much. The fact that Mary hutton is rescuing these wonderful beings is fantastic. If we can get the tourists to stop giving money to see them dance and donate that money toward saving them the last dancing bear will be off the street so much more quickly. The whole situation has to be addressed because people do not want to relinquish their only means of income if they cannot find other work. So in this case there is little greed involved ojn the part of the operators / bear owners, it is more a matter of survival. I will not and do not condone ANY form of cruelty, this being one so I want to see the dancing bears stop yesterday. All those of you who can donate, especially enough to save a bear $1000, please do so anything else will also be most appreciated.Their merchandise is excellent and there is range enough for christmas shopping or other gift giving occasions.Giving a bear sponsorship instead of the usual unnecessary item to further clutter up our lives would be wonderful, most unusual and usually most delightedly received. If we all give a little bit and put a tiny amount of thought and understanding into this whole horrific and sad situation we will be able to solve it a lot more quickly than being angry at the cruelty alone.Next time you are tempted to buy yourself a trinket or bauble that serves no purpose except to please your eyes then please rethink your purchase, think of the plight of the bears and the enduring poverty of their owners and help them instead. Thank you.FREE THE BEARS FUND INC, P.O. Box 1393,Osborne Park DC, Western Australia 6916 AUSTRALIA.

That should be about 1000 bears to rescue not 100.

The indifference, callousness and contempt that so many people exhibit toward animals is evil first because it results in great suffering in animals, and second because it results in an incalculably great impoverishment of the human spirit. All education should be directed toward the refinement of the individual's sensibilities in relation not only to one's fellow humans everywhere, but to all things whatsoever. ~Ashley Montague

Lyn, You are so right. Money is the root to all evil. Those bears should have their freedom and be left to live in peace the way our creator intended. It is so awful to see this horrific crime against these bears...noted.

Samantha, You're right.
We cannot judge others, especially if we do not know the background, and if we ourselves do not act accordingly with our speech. It turns into nothing our struggle for better life on Earth if the only thing we do is write how wrong things are. Many can't afford to give money or buy stuff (and pay taxes when the items bought enter their country), but they can live good and helping lives.
But if you have money you can spare, it's better to give it to those who can help more.
In the case of india's dancing bears the org you told us about is a good channel.
Maybe they can remember the bears that mostly in similar conditions live in central Europe...?
