Thanks for the item, Brenda. I also am really tired of the spammers who fill up page after page of our news site with constant offers for free downloads of TV shows, info on the Site Rush (whatever that bloody thing is), Bollywood photos, names of malpractice attorneys, and other such interesting things.

Perhaps if spammers had to go to the trouble of filling out a profile and actually signing petitions or clicking to donate before being allowed to post news items, they wouldn't go to all that trouble.

When I see a spam news item, I always click on "problem" then "spam" to report it to Care2. I hope everyone is doing the same.

Although I appreciate the problem, my concern with this is that is could dissuade genuine new members from taking part. It seems unfair to punish them for the actions of spammers.
On my group such posts are deleted and trolls are banned the moment I are encounter them Perhaps this is the way forward? Zero tolerance has its virtues!

You're right, Brenda. A few minutes ago, I was diligently flagging spammers on the news site and checked out their join dates. Some are from as long ago as June. And I'm pretty sure I've flagged them before. Seems to be a real cottage industry.

Noted but didn't sign. Not long ago there was a new member that was PICKED on for saying what they thought was right. The person is learning and fighting well for animals. If the person was left out, they would have been lost. Sorry I can't agree. Everyone to their own. Spammers come & go. A long time ago I used to flag them. But now I note stories with that time, before it was wasted on them. Thanks Brenda my friend.

Sorry Brenda, I don't agree. Just because one is new here at Care2 does not mean one cannot voice one's opinion. Blocking people from posting a comment is not going to stop spammers! I ignore the crap and get on with my life. Flagging idiots is a waste of time. On one of the news stories, about the burglar who threw the cat 30 feet into the air - some dear soul left one comment: Naughty! You are listed. I assume this was in response to the word sh..t being used in the comments. This user obviously trolls to look for 'foul' language, getting his/her kicks out of reporting anything offense - never mind the intent of the posters or the story itself. I just read it and thought, 'ja well, no fine'. And carried on with my life.

You have your right to your opion, but I do not agree, and so do not feel comfortable signing this petition. I agree spammers are a problem. But I also agree banning new poeple from posting is wrong. It is every persons right whether they chose to sign petitions or get butterflies. I do not think it is right to put restrictions on anyone. It sounds like we are becoming like facebook and myspace with too much sensorship. I do not want to discourage new members. I have never posted news stories, but I posted many comments before I started signing petitions when I first joined. There are petitions now I do not sign but I may post a comment. I have petitions I need signing, it gets frustrating more poeple dont get involved in singing petitions. I get frustrated with poeple joing groups and than it seems they never check that group to see what is happening in the group. There are groups on care2 with hundreds of members who seem to be just names as members and not active. but that is thier choice. I feel we need to find a way to get members more active not worry about the spammers and trouble makers. Those we can just ignore.

All I will say is you are going to hurt a lot of good people good activists with this (many people can't come in every day and would not be considered by you to be very active). Loup De La Wolf, what the Petition is talking about is not forcing someone to stop in every day or continue to be active. It simply is asking that Care2 require new members to fill out their profile and get a few butterflies before they can post news items or comments. This will cut down on the spammers and the trolls who sign up just to post a few nasty comments before vanishing.

A new person could fill out their profile and sign petitions the very first day they signed up - they wouldn't have to wait days or weeks. But a lot of spammers and trolls wouldn't be willing to fill out a profile or sign any petitions just to get on and do their thing (at least that's what the author of the petition hopes.)

In any case, it's up to Care2 whether or not to implement this - starting a petition doesn't mean it will actually happen.

Totally agree Tim, you don't have to be spending days on end signing petitions, it just happens because your interested in other stories and it goes from there.... People who randomly come across this sight and see ONE story that interest them and the story hasn't interested them because of the cruelty or unjust acts its so they can bag the people for the comments already made........ While I am against censorship, I do not think of this as a "newbie" problem. If a person is sincere in the convictions and beliefs and has signed a petition, then that person has every right to be here. The problem stems from those of us who are already here on C2. The enemy within as I like to call them. The people with multiple accounts. A certain Polar Bear comes to mind. I don't know how you do it in your respective countries, but in the Republic of the United States there is one vote per person. Many of you are already friends or are people that have multiple personas here on C2. Many of us have remained silent putting up with their charade. What is their purpose, no idea. Who are they, well I know of one who has at least 3 if not more accounts. But I'm not sure on how to prove it. Unfortunatley this goes beyond comments, it underlies the basis of being here!! There are alot of aspects to Care2. in my opinion it is the importance of the petition.
It is our voice to the powers that be. It is a voice that not all listen to but they know that we are there. I don't know about your country, but in mine it has been a huge uphill battle just to get our elected officials to accept emails!! Because of the fact that one needs to verify that you are who you really are. Now I am signing petitions on Care2. As are others including yourself. Now what would happen if it got out that of the 9 million members of Care2 that there are an X% of profiles(people) that do not exist!! And these X-profiles have signed petitions. But they are not real people!! Why would a lawmaker listen to a petition?? Why would anyone listen to us if it is ALL A LIE!?!?? Honesty and integrity are all we have!! Anyone that has more than one profile is detrimental to the mission. If we don't police ourselves, hold ourselves to an honor system of truth and integrity, then all is lost!! I don't know how C2 will enforce it. But if it can't, then WE should.
Our signature is our weapon!! And now because of multiple profilers...................... WE HAVEN"T ANY WEAPON AT ALL!!

I agree, James, that existing members who create multiple aliases are the most difficult problem of all. Trust is essential in any online community and they destroy that trust. Unfortunately, all we can do is report the aliases to Care2 whenever we (occasionally) discover them. It is always my hope that they will do the right thing and immediately zap the alias out of existence. I wish that creating aliases like that was a bannable offense for the creator of those aliases as well; however, that doesn't seem to be the case.

I guess the best we can do is just enjoy the other good friends that we meet here and say to hell with the dishonest ones. Care2 is a lot of fun and is a well-set-up forum even with the occasional troll, alias, or spammer.

For those of you who think it is wrong. We just had a fourteen yr old on the polls claiming she was 42, then 27. Without profile, petitions or clicks - at least something to say who they are and why they are here can cause damage. This kid was obnoxious, enough I would say to get her into major trouble. There are predators out there. Keep it safe for all folks. We get personal on this site and a lot of information is passed around. I would like to know who I am talking to.

I signed, even though I'm a newbie, I really don't want to be cut off from posting, but I see the need for it. I signed on a year ago, thinking it was just cute cards and the occasional petition, then a few months ago, I got the Care2newsletter. I like it a lot here and want it to remain the focus of help and information for our environment and animals, so I'll be willing to stop posting for a while until I sign enough to do so again. (I wont' just sign anything).

Noted and signed. There are lots of times that "crap" shows up on these sites. If I post a story, it's because I believe that others would be interested and it accomplishes something. These "look at this" offers to see the "Rush Site", I don't need to know or care to know or the Forex thing. Keep the kids out and the newbies on a short leash in the beginning.

I understand this petition & I understand the way the newbie feels.. but really I was a newbie for a while & all of you been so nice to me.. even tho I get carried away some.. don't think they are judging all newbies by the bad ones.. just trying to cut the ones that are making the newbies look bad.. like the pit-bulls & the rap they get.. you just separate the bad from the good.. then you have the earnest newbies..if i was a newbie I would do what I wanted anyhow & then these Care2 will know its not you thats doing the bad vibes in here.. ;-)) IF your earnest it will show... if you don't care but to show stupity that will show also.. anyhow Thanks Brenda... Where the hell did this go?? I thought the topic was 'trolls' and 'newbies'?? I signed this, originally, Oct 16th. It was Ron's petition. It was based on taking to task those who would insinuate themselves in such a way as to disrupt discussion.

While we are expressing strong opinions and are engaged in viable exchange, someone jumps in with bs. And then more bs. And, after patient explanation, either they won't grow, or they won't go away. Those ones.

And then, while trying to muster the patience, we might become a bit assertive. Unfortunately, based on the system in place, a C2 thing, we're the ones suspended. Not the instigators and the trouble makers, we the eventual retaliators.

Why? Because we're trying to allow for and promote free expression, and we fight our own battles, until someone narqs us out.

So back to, why members should be required to familiarize themselves with the spirit of 'here' before they are allowed to run rampant. There are other community sites where one might go to spew. Here there is a family.

I am sorry but I disagree.
I have only in the last 2 years, come to terms with what has happened in my life.
I use my real birth name on this site and don't hide behind a handle.
I do care,I observe and I have empathy for many causes BUT I am afraid someone trolling the site may track down my current where abouts.

I am not being a drama queen but a realist. One box does not fit all.
We all hate spam but if nothing was a challenge, we wouldn't feel any sense of achievement.

Thank you for your consideration and letting me post although I don't have the required minimums you are proposing. I'm also running late because when you are passionate about something, time runs away with you:)

If you are using your real name then why then are you afraid of getting trolled? Seems like you already blew your cover Kathryn!

The point here folks is people who come on Care2 usually care. If you care then you would fill out a few petitions - it takes what maybe 15 minutes of your time to fill out what 5 or 6? Then you have contributed. Then we find out that you care. Click to donate takes all of 5 mins.
A profile is a matter of respect, manners. It is very annoying to talk to someone without a profile since you have no idea who it is you are talking to.
But if you come here just to aggravate, spam or troll then you do not contribute and you are wasting everyones time including your own. Don't degrade the site.

Since it appears to be such a bone of contention, why not ask the author of the Petition to reword it - changing the request to CARE2 to this: that new members be restricted from creating news items themselves until they've garnered at least 20 butterflies. They could still post comments to news items, post comments to polls, vote in polls, and everything else. That would at least cut down on the spammers perhaps - and, except for the aliases (which we can't do a whole lot about except report them), I think they're the most troublesome.

And most new members aren't creating news items anyway, unless they're spammers. I know that it took me awhile to figure out how to do things on the forum. So it shouldn't really affect any genuine members anyway.

What say you all?

What on earth is going on...? Err -- I wasn't so sure about it, but going through the news thing that Brenda posted... I see why. And I totally agree. I think this may put off a few people, but one of the best things about Care2 is the community, and that needs to be sanctified. (Is that the right word?)

I also think that people who type in all capitals should be warned, or something... I remember that as a little girl, people who did so scared me, and this could well be the case for other younger people reading this.

I have one niggle, though; aliases. Why is this bad?! I need two different email addresses; one for work, and one for other things. I have no problem in admitting this. I do all my Care2 stuff on here, while I leave my other alias purely for work. However, it gives me a buzz knowing that with every email I sent, money is being sent to charity.

If this is a problem, I will simply switch back to Hotmail and be done with it. If anyone has an answer to this, please help... thanks :)

Brenda, the typing in all caps is now considered to be "yelling". Ever since chat rooms came to be I guess its been sort of an unspoken rule. Its not a big deal, only the younger readers would look twice at it, but that is why it was mentioned I think. Sorry you have trouble reading the texts. Shame they don't have a way to bold (or spell check, I'm the worst!)

Tatiana, we were all new once, but most of us come here to make a difference for our respective causes. For a lot of us it is animal rights.

Filling out a profile helps everyone to get to know each other and what we stand for. If you don't want to fill it out, it is indeed your business. If you are truly serious about being a member at Care2, you may want to think about it. And don't take offense. One sweet soul suggested, very kindly, a picture helps to immediately identify people. I'm not very savvy when it comes to computers and it took a long time to stick one on, but I finally managed.

Ron Stephen, one of my friends, was ganged up on and given the boot by a pack of backwater morons. They don't like to hear the truth. Apparently, they can pretty much get away with saying anything, which burns me.

Yes. Indeed we do need this petition.

Hi - This is Randy P from Care2 - Just wanted to let you all know we're very much aware of the spammer problem and appreciate your help on this. If you see spammers, please do flag their profiles and let us know why/how/where they were spamming. If enough people flag a new profile, it will automatically disable it. Older profiles we treat differently, but we do manually check out all spam reports. We're constantly removing spammer profiles, but they are tenacious and sometimes quite clever in avoiding our spam-traps.

In the new year we'll be rolling out more robust solutions, and disincentives that should reduce the impact. It's really frustrating, and pretty amazing how much time and effort it wastes for everyone involved, but it's a reality of the open internet. I'm not going to go into what exactly our solutions will be, as that simply telegraphs the work-around for the spammers, but we do think that through a combination of an improved backend solution combined with more community involvement, we'll be able to minimize their impact.

The new system for trying to cut down on spam is now in place. If y'all haven't noticed yet, underneath every news item is now a row of buttons. If you click on the "spam" button, the news item instantly is "hidden" from sight - I assume pending final zapping by CARE2 if they consider it to really be spam.

Thanks to Randy for this new system and policy.
