Thanks Tierney. This or similar articles should be required reading for anyone who wants to raise chickens either commercially, or as pets. There is a lot of info about the nature of chickens that would surprise a lot of people.

Thank you, Tierney, for this wonderful tory!

"We must fight against the spirit of unconscious cruelty with which we treat the animals. Animals suffer as much as we do. True humanity does not allow us to impose such sufferings on them. It is our duty to make the whole world recognize it. Until we extend our circle of compassion to all living beings, humanity will not find peace." - Albert Schweitzer, physician/Nobel Laureate.

Oh Tierney, what a wonderful essay about chickens and what a dedicated observers the essayist is. There were so many things answered about chickens from the first lines til the end of the essay. Now I can understand so these details of which I have been curious about for a long time. It is hard to believe that chickens come from such a rugged terrain. No wonder the roosters are so feisty when the had to protect the group. I am very glad you posted your first news story and you did it so well with such a great back-up essay.

Maybe we should take a few lessons from the chickens. They're obviously more socially advanced tham we are. Thanks, Tierney.

i hate to break up the party... but 11 dead chickens before they took action? after one, i would have freaked out and put them in dog kennels or something until i could build the fence. and why couldn't they re-catch eva and her chicks? i don't get it.

Thank you for promoting compassion and kindness ---no animal deserves to be exploited and treated cruelly or be considered food--I am hoping we are evolving into a society that is vegetarian and treats all living things as sacred and deserving of respect and love.

Karen Davis is a heroine. Women like her, such as Pattrice and Miriam Jones (, are true revolutionary pioneers to which I believe all animal lovers will one day be indebted. Because in the future much of society will look back and wonder how anyone could have ever been so heartless as to look down on chickens and other foul...

Karen's United Poultry Concerns newsletter was my first exposure to animal rights for chickens some twenty years ago, and she has been an inspiration ever since!

Who, besides Karen Davis, have you eve heard explain the importance of looking a chicken in the eye?!And yet it makes such common sense!

In order to really 'respect' ANY animals we need to do just that. RE-SPECT! To 'look again' with renewed vision beyond the human reflection we see there in the eyes of 'the other' into another world every bit as mysterious and miraculous as our own...

Why should people be so astonished by the fact that animals and in that definintion I include birds have memory fcaring feelings, communication and social relationships even if they only have bird brains. Just remember it only within the last decade that the US elected a human being apparently with none with none of these attributes as their leader. Not content with proving that evolution had not touched the US they did it Twice!

Rosemary is wise. Yes, write a series of "Chicken" books and it will become bestsellers. I think it is a great it!! Humans think too little of chickens and stories will be an eye opener.

ty Tierney, they are amazing creatures, their social structure is tight, the male is so fiercely protective, and their is an obvious reason behind the term 'mother hen'. and those chicks? well who couldn't love them

Thanks Tierney, for this beautifully written and demotive article. How can anyone not love these gentle feathered friends of ours? Their mothering instincts are amazing and they can teach some modern mothers a thing or two, I am sure.
God bless this woman and her sanctuary.

this is a great story. i have great respect for birds of all kinds.

on a different, rather sad and yet humorous side, the title of this - the social life of chickens - could also be used as satirical commentary on the ways of our human existence. (*snicker*)

What a lovely essay by Karen Davis! Thank you! I am so glad this is available to show what these fellow creatures are truly like--you rarely get a glimpse of how sociable and lovable they are. I hope it inspires people to view their choices about what is considered "food" differently and to stand up against the way the industrial food industry exploits and abuses these animals. Thanks, again for sharing this!
