Farm Sanctuary spoke up, and the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) is listening. In 2007, we formally petitioned the USDA to consider the treatment and living conditions of farm animals when creating rules allowing producers to label food

it should be abolished entirely - however - each animal has to be reborn elsewhere somehow , as another animal , wild or domestic , or some as humans , - so this first has to be arranged , people have to agree to set up new places or communities or lifestyle unusual options & miracles.
some one might not understand this necessary process & make a mistake .

Factory farms are so disgusting. how they have been able to be in existence for over 50 yrs is appauling.

it is time not just factory farms were closed but all slaughter houses also.

it is time humans stop using animals for thier greed and selfishness.

Factory farming is wayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy diffrent than the regular farmer/rancher. Factory farming is all and just about the monies and no welfare to the animals. At least a regular (If I may call it that) farmer/rancher at least takes care of their animals better than a factory farmer. For the most part anyways...there are the exceptions to this rule.

There are too many people on this earth and that is one of the reasons why factory farming takes place. That to me is no justification to let animals live in this condition for humans.

Thank you, Tierney. I have been a member of Farm Sanctuary. I appreciate your bringing it to the attention of members who may not have heard of this wonderful organization.

I grew up on a family farm. This is entirely unrecognizable to me. No one ever has to be cruel to any animal and no excuses or explanations justify cruelty ever. It's time to break up the investment banks and the factory farms, and the rest of the horrific profiteers who plunder and pillage all they see and find. Sheesh.

Thanks Tierney. There is a huge difference between factory farming and small-scale farming. Factory farmers are way more likely to treat their animals as commodities rather than the living, breathing sentient creatures they are and have little regard for their natural behaviours. I'm on my way to sign.

Living in cramped conditions, not able to stretch your legs, being herded into crates with no breathing room - whom do you factory farmers think you're kidding? Picture what cannibals to their victims, I can hardly imagine. So show some kindness, give food and water and let the animals breathe some fresh air before you do your disgusting work. It reminds me of cannibals.

This is clear to see where 'greed' and savagery is FULL blast and our voiceless creatures are treated in such deplorable marner.Come on people rise and lend your VOICES to stop this pain and torture.

Factory farms are outlandish and they reek the air for a long way around, they foul the ground and watersheds, and of course are inhumane for the animals in them. Never being able to see the sun or be out in the open. A human made kind of hell for them.
The reason for them is profit. It's basically the idea of 'bulk' production. The more animals you have the more money you make.
I think it ends up taking about 10,000 litres of water to make 1 kg. of beef as compared to a few hundred for grain or vegetables.

Tierney, the 'comments' are for USA citizens only - I normally cheat on petitions by signing my TX zip code - but can't do that here - too many questions I can't answer. But I've signed in spirit!

I have submitted my comment to the USDA site with pleasure and I have been given a tracking number to locate it when it gets printed onto the site. It says this can take weeks, as there are thousands of comments to upload. I just wanted to say that the comments can be submitted by ANYONE from any country. When I first read it I too thought that all the fields had to be filled in. On further reading I noticed that the only two compulsory fields that are marked with an asterisk are your First & Last Name. You do not even have to enter your email address if you do not wish to. There is a drop down box with various countries in it too, if you wish to enter which country you are from.

Hope this helps when other people sign the site.

Thank-you Tierney for this post and for caring so much for ALL animals of our world.

I have put a copy of the comment I submitted to USDA below:

I feel very strongly about how all animals are treated and I belong to many Animal Welfare Sites and have signed many petitions, sent many letters to governments, organisations and Country Leaders regarding abuse and cruelty to animals. I have been involved heavily with many campaigns which have involved research, sending of letters to officials civic addresses & using the media to promote Animal Welfare.

The people of our world are working towards a Universal Declaration on Animal Welfare & we will not tolerate animal abuse, cruelty or neglect in anyway whatsoever.

Millions of people across the world are becoming increasingly aware of the way in which animals are treated, especially on Factory Farms. Any meat producing industry that carries out abuse, cruelty or neglect on ANY level should be prohibited from labelling their products as 'raised naturally' or 'natural'.

This type of wording gives the impression to the public that the 'animal' concerned has been raised naturally & has not been abused or neglected in anyway. To be allowed to use the words 'raised naturally' or 'natural' on any meat or poultry product, the organisation or farm that has raised the animals in question should adhere to the following:

All Animals raised should NOT suffer any abuse, cruelty or neglect such as: any treatment that inflicts any pain or suffering to the animals concerned, force feeding, giving hormones to promote growth, inadequate/squalid cramped living or transport conditions, not feeding the animal with the correct diet, preventing the animal from living its life in its natural environment outside with plenty of room to move around & fresh air and not treating the animal with humanity and respect.

I implore you to make it law for any meat/poultry industry to follow these regulations rigidly & to be prosecuted and closed down if they do not.

From one who cares deeply about all the sentient animals of our world.

SALLY DIX
