Election results in Virginia, New Jersey, New York and Maine serve as a reminder that the Religious Right remains an influential force in political life, according to Americans United for Separation of Church and State.

I don;t like election results from three states prove anything.

Because the right wing is in the minority, this shows that the democrats, liberals and progressives stayed home, resting on their backsides thinking "we've got congress and the president, so no need to vote."

Wrong.

This is where the right wing has one up on us: they never give up coming out in droves. The same way we gained control, we will have to do the same with all elections...call, write, beg, encourage, order everyone you know to get out and vote and stay active!

Marion I could not have said it better myself! If we don't stand up and fight like you knowwhat, well then we might as well not do anything and let the country be ruled by the American Taliban! NOT! Over my dead body!

Americans who want to know more about the most influential and well-funded arms of the Religious Right can go to online sites, such as Liberty University, Bob Jones University, Baptist Bible College, etc. and quickly get a strong sense of their political and social missions. These are but a few. I think that few Americans know how many large and small Bible colleges exist...colleges that decades ago turned out good people aspiring to spiritual leadership. Perhaps a few still hold to that simple, pure goal. However, money and power corrupt. We have a Religious Right that is indeed guided by their new god...money/power. The rest of us, religious or not, spiritual or not, tied to any political party or not, need to remain informed and vote and actively protect our civil and religious freedoms.

SHUT UP! Claiming that Conservatives = Religious Right is just bogus! It was MODERATES who won all the elections last night, including in New York, New Jersey, and Virginia. Both the Dems and the Reps need to start appealing more to the center again if we are to have a stable government in the future.

Dale the guy that won in Va. last night is not a moderate. He is a wolf in sheeps clothing. Very conservative, and told the only way he could win the race was to stick to the money issues. He was told ! He still is an extreme right winger who thinks women should be sent back to the dark ages among other extreme right wing views..

Kathleen, yes, there are religious people left and right, but there is a certain segment of the right that seems intent on inserting religion into our government. I ran across this site yesterday:

http://theocracywatch.org/

It had tons of interesting reading on this subject. I think the site will help with understanding about the "dangerous" faction of the religious right.

Namaste
