Large Methane Reservoirs Beneath Antarctic Ice Sheet, Study Suggests

The Antarctic Ice Sheet could be an overlooked but important source of methane, a potent greenhouse gas, according to a report in the August 30 issue of Nature by an international team of scientists.

The great rub of climate change is that we are already in far, far deeper trouble than most of us can even imagine. If we stopped all sources of CO2 and emissions that contribute to warming of the climate today, then we would still be facing increasingly severe impacts due to the emissions that we have already emitted. And, here is the big news that so many speaking out about climate change fail to mention: as the climate continues to change, so then the polar regions will continue to thaw. As the polar regions thaw, large deposits of methane will be released. When that happens, it will be like 9-11 hitting every human being on the planet at once. Once the methane deposits are released into the atmosphere, climate change will be far beyond our ability to slow, much less halt. When that happens, we will be in a race to save ourselves from total extinction.

Beginning to wonder if the Mayan calendar is right? Frightening thoughts of what is in store for us.

Have you ever visited Guatemala and spoken with experts on the Maya? They'll tell you how laughable they find the "end of times" prediction.

The Maya were no different from us...they devastated their environment, destroyed their forests, spent all their money on warfare and eventually killed themselves. They were no more able to predict the end of times than you or I.

I have followed the Mayan culture and predictions and it is true; they were self destructive like many other great cultures and empires before them: ancient Egypt, Rome and Germany. The Germans were extremely advanced and their technology was and is the basis of our space and hi tech aircraft technology.

They structured the nuclear missiles which we adopted and Russian and USA took the German scientists after WWII.

Mother Nature is the powerful wrecker of all when she gets going, air, wind and fire are her tools to devastate and destroy. Just be humbled that Hurricane Issac did not get to full force but havoc was evident in many areas in LA, FL. I put my money on mother nature as the real power over man because she comes as she pleases.

It mystifies me why a story like this isn't covered by the lamestream media. I wonder if it is because of the politicization of scientific facts about global warming. The question is, what do we do about this now? Ir seems that we cannot continue to ignore this.

Sounds like way more methane is there than what is released by volcanic eruptions in a year. But, it's definitely something to keep an eye on. If and (more likely) when the ice sheets melt, hopefully it will not all be released at once!
