Critics Trying to Rescue Dogs From 'Sanctuary of Sorrow'

FORKS, Wash. -- It's a noble cause: Give sanctuary to dangerous dogs whose only other option is being euthanized. But critics say the man who runs the Olympic Animal Sanctuary has failed that mission and the many dogs in his care should be removed.

Signed , shared and noted. despicable!!! Couldn't watch more than a few moments of the video.....I can't take it. Why haven't these fools (officials) sent a request to Best Friends Animal Sanctuary? They are fantastic with 'dangerous' dogs (think ex-pit fighters and Vicks' dogs) They have the space, the personnel and the knowledge to truly LOVE and CARE for these dogs. I just don't get people anymore....that would let that situation go on and on and on. I really don't.

Very sad news. I hope justice is served for the hundreds of innocent souls.

That situation is absolutely 'pathetic'....I'm sure its easy enough to get a warrant to go inside and investigate then bring this guy before the courts. There are way too many people know what's going on and plenty of pictures already to show this guy is performing animal cruelty. One person cannot possible maintian 120 dogs properly every day. He is a sick & cruel man. These dogs need to be released so they can get proper care and companionships. God we pray for your help on this matter. Amen

Signed petitions! Will contact those listed above! This is no sanctuary! It is a den of punishment and horror for these poor dogs! This man should be charged with felony animal cruelty and have to serve time in jail! I can't believe Mayor and law enforcement is so intimidated by this man who is obviously an animal hoarder and has really lost touch with reality is so oblivious to the suffering of these dogs! I'm hoping that HSUS or another national organization will somehow be able to take these dogs away from him as they will slowly perish otherwise! Praying for these poor dogs.

Ruth I agree. I agree with everyone . These animals need help fast .

I will be signing right after I post. I think chances is the website I had to register for an account with because I don't do FB. I'm sure it is. In case people that don't have FB like me want to sign,it did allow me to make an account because i just recenly did it for a ferret petition. I felt it was urgent enough and this one is urgent as well.

Frances Darcy - I usually sign twice and many of us have different email addresses even with our pets names. I believe they go by the email address and any other address you use. I don't personally see any problem with that and more signatures are always needed. Only an opinion. I'm not suggesting that people should do this. Sometimes there's more than one of us in the home or we have a friend.

This is an extremely horrible situation. It breaks my heart.

TY for the post Sue!

I think that no matter how dangerous a dog is, it should not be euthanized. Animals don't have a conscience and humans do. They don't even give death penalty to some filthy rapists so why give it to these poor animals. No if its dangerous then it should be kept confined, people say that there's not enough money for this but that just shows how much work there needs to be done.

"Mayor Monohon was asked "is there not enough reason to get a warrant to go in and look?"

"There is not at this time," he said.

Outside the warehouse, KOMO 4 News asked Markwell directly, "When you look over at that facility, is that really the vision that you had in mind when you started?"

"It's a starting point," he said.

Markwell began to walk away.

"Anyway, I don't want to do an interview," he said.

KOMO 4 News contacted top animal welfare leaders locally and nationwide. All of them, including the Humane Society of the United States, agree there are big problems with the Olympic Animal Sanctuary and several are trying to help. It's unclear whether Markwell will accept that help."

Sad situation that started out as well-meaning.

Thanks Sue.

It's unfortunate, but a job that big needs whole teams of people to make it work. I feel bad for the guy, apparentlty his heart was in the right place, but lots of people don't realize just how big these problems are until they actually get headlong into it.

Noted, tweeted, shared, watched video, tweeted and shared video. This is really stressful. Horrible to think that a sanctuary hurts animals. Also I am unsure of the truth. Because I love animals, I want to protect them from just the possibility of being mistreated; yet, no one wants hostile animals. Makes me one to cry because I can't in my mind figure our a logical answer.

Community rescue groups are the people who help prevent healthy animals from being killed by county animal shelters. Keeping animals out of gas chambers and from the needles and saving lives of innocent animals. In Brevard County Fl http://www.melfla.com/ our animal services shelters are refusing to let community rescue groups do their thing and animals are needlessly dying. When animal services is forced to work with these groups the system works. In less than 4 weeks 169 cats were adopted after an adoption center was set up in the local mall controlled by a rescue group. Yet BASE continues to turn their head to what can be done when people put their minds to saving animals in county shelters. My first hand experience with Herbie the Cat http://www.melfla.com/Herbie.html should have been a feel good story but instead Herbie is a statistic. His fate was with the Gas Chamber man http://www.melfla.com/letterofgaschamber.html and he was killed two hours before I could rescue him. I urge everyone to take action to make sure your community joins the other 200+ towns, cities and organizations that are now NO KILL facilities where 90% or more of the animals are saved.

Contact Brevard County Animal Services and tell them to stop killing healthy animals http://www.melfla.com/e-maillist.html
