- "Holy arrhythmia Batman! A connection between the taser and the heart?! ... "
- "Precisely Robin. More than 50,000 volts of electricity impacting the sternum, knocking out the SA node... "
- "...and stopping the heart!?"
- "Exactly! But in this case, we can say the man was arrested..."
- "Why that dastardly Penguin!"
- "We must tell Commissioner Gordon... quick, to the bat cave!"

TASER International is wise to do this..hopefully it will cut down the lawsuits against them..which by the way most have been dismissed..But it is still a costly procedure for them..

"The new guidelines state: "We have lowered the recommended point of aim from the center of mass to the lower centre of mass for frontal discharges.

"Officers should avoid chest shots where possible.

"Should sudden cardiac arrest occur in a scenario involving a Taser discharge to the chest area - it would place the law enforcement agency, the officer, and Taser International in the difficult situation of trying to ascertain what role, if any, the Taser could have played in an unique situation that cannot be replicated in human clinical safety evaluations."

The guidelines add that the risk of death from Taser is "extremely low", but that back shots "remain the preferred area when practical".

The most recent Taser advice issued by the Association of Chief Police Officers (ACPO) stated that 'ordinarily the Taser should be aimed to strike the body mass below the neck' - meaning direct shots to the chest are not yet ruled out.
A Home Office spokesman said today it was "considering" the new advice on the use of Taser."

There is still no proof that it does cause death in itself..

Thanks Terry..

"There is still no proof that it does cause death in itself" ... didn't your mother always tell you never to stick your finger into an electrical socket... do you know why? Because you can get electrocuted! Do you know what a taser does? It electrocutes!!

A taser has two electrode wires, with barbs, that are launched at the unsuspecting subject. They have little hooks (like velcro) that attach to your clothing. In theory, current passes from one electrode to the other electrode over a short distance of skin. It is very high voltage with very small current, but sufficiently painful and disorientating. In theory, there should be minimal disruption of current between the electrodes, since they are much closer together than an electrode to the heart and back would be. However, there are a myriad of complications, including shock, which can impair voluntary and involuntary muscle response. Often times over zealous law enforcement officers are pinning the subject down on the ground under their full weight. This further overwhelms respiratory and cardiac function, possibly leading to respiratory failure and/or cardiac arrest.

The body happens to be a great conductor, and if one of the barbs does not make contact sufficiently enough or becomes dislodged somehow, the current will always flow to ground through the path of least resistance... so, while your friendly neighborhood cop is tasing you, the electrical current can flow through your body to ground (that's your feet btw). Now, if you get zapped in the chest, what's between the electrode and your feet? .... right, your heart... so the current passes through your heart taking the path of least resistance to ground. But now you have upwards of 50k volts and 5mA (Taser X26) passing through the heart's pacemaker, the sinoatrial (SA) node, compared to a few mV. Instead of lasting a millisecond, you hold that current for 5 seconds or more. Under these circumstances, the likelihood of disrupting the SA node increases exponentially with time. The longer you hold the taser, the greater the likelihood of trauma to the SA node, especially in people with heart conditions. When the SA node stops firing, your heart stops. Period. So, some cracker-jack medical doctor deliberating on the lack of evidence that tasers kill people is either beyond incompetent, or someone is greasing his pockets...
