I read the article but I do not understand why he got 6 years. It must have been a brutal killing. should the dog have been leashed? Yes. but this man used a machete-who even owns machetes? I dont know enough about the story to judge-but it must have been pretty horrific for him to get 6 years in prison. I hope he met Bubba in prison.....

Why couldn't he keep the chickens in an enclosed, safe fenced in area if they were pets that he loved so much? Animals kill because they do not know any better. This man deserved ten years as he knew he was not handling the situation in a proper manner. Killing someone else's dog is like killing a member of their family and a person who does this deserves what he gets.

I'm on the fence with this one because Yes he was trying to protect his chickens.But how did the dog get to them? The dog owner seems to be at fault if his dog wasn't on a leash.ere the chickens fenced in? This is a very sad situation. I myself have a machete but couldn't imagine using it on an animal.

I grew up in the southeast part of the country. Free roaming chickens and dogs are common. Fences sufficient to enclose anything smaller than a cow are not. If the attack happened on Jones' property, then Jones was correct in his actions to defend his chickens and the dog (and dog's owner) was at fault. There should not have even been charges, an arrest, or trial.

Shelvin, I find YOUR judgements irrelevant. 1) you only have 2 friends so you are not a REAL care2 participant 2)you ARE from that part of the country! 3) and you obviously hate women! It doesn't feel good when the shoe is on the other foot does it! Your chauvinistic attitude and thoughtless comments are not going to be well received here. Perhaps the KKK sites may welcome your attitude, but it doesn't fly in Care2.

Dawn, I don't hate women or anyone for that matter and I abhor the KKK. Just because I am from the southeastern part of the country does not make me a chauvinist, nor is it cause to attack me. My lack of using Care2 as a social network does not have any relevance to my activity here. I do not brag, but I will state facts, not speculation as you have done. Every morning I use the Click To Donate for which I've received 425 butterflies. I comment on articles where I feel drawn to comment and those comments have gotten me 55 green stars. Not bad considering they all come from strangers and are based soley on the content of my posts instead of an Internet friendship. Finally, I have signed 262 petitions, many of which were for the benefit of women in some way or another. I do not state these facts with the desire or intent to impress you or anyone else. I honestly don't care if you or anyone else is impressed or not. They are stated simply to show that I am a REAL Care2 participant, based on actions instead of numbers of friends.

would hate to have any animal baby of mine killed by anyone, including a dog killing my chicks. the story isn't very informative, could have reported better, we don't really know enough, but what really bothers me is he got so many many years for one dog that attacked one of his own animals and dog fighters, ahem, can get out after just 2 years for many brutal dog killings? so money does talk after all.
feel bad for that dog, he should have been better contained, poor animal suffered a horrible death as well as the chicks.
