Ideally nobody should smoke, but if you chose to smoke, you should be taxed. More people die of lung-cancer than any other cancer and this burden we (the smokers) has to be paid somehow. Taxing sigarettes is one of them.

Isn't it time we honored one of our treaties or is it just more convienient to say oh that was made 300 years ago and we don't want to abide by it anymore. This is not about health it is about keeping your promises! The whole US is going to have big money problems with so many out of work there are less taxes being paid in. Maybe we should just take what little of THEIR land "we" gave them and sell it to increase revenue. Or maybe the ultra rich who have for centuries not paid taxes because of loop holes, have to start paying. We will never achieve peace if we continue to just change the rules when ever we want or just take what ever we want. Leave the Native people alone!

The US government made these sovereign nations meaning they may as well be in France. People in states have NO say about native governments or native land, it falls under federal. Many full blooded natives are not enough native to be registered as they may be 4 or 5 different tribes. US government say 1/4 native of ONE tribe to be registered and then you must prove it to that tribe. Most tribes will issue ID. On the other hand you must look to see if there is a treaty with states, as usually there isn't and federal would still supercede state. They can not be state tax collectors but many states keep trying it over cigarresttes or booze. Many tribes still pay taxes off the reservation for anything and everything so don't group them as non taxed. If you think the US government is screwed up, you should study what they did to natives. Nothing in favor of tribes, that's for sure and sooooo screwed up from tribe to tribe. No lawyer needs to know anything about native laws on reservation. Native tribes have their own Constitution and by laws for their land. If tribes wanted to levy a tax on goods bought on the reservation, they have the right and they can keep the money as tribal tax. This is far too complicated to try and explain as laws vary from tribe to tribe. This is why natives refer to treaties as a base for arguements. Please stop saying they are tax free. They aren't. The BIA "leased" native land for 99 years on a base that went back to the 20's and 30's. My husband got $1.00 per acre per month or $12.00 per year. Where are any of you going to find grazing or farm land that cheap? Natives really have little say over lease amount or if they can refuse to lease to whites. I don't know what ya all are thinking but, believe me, every law on the books are not in a natives favor. Trouble in the white world was created by your white law makers so let them take a cut in pay and reduce the tax base. They are at fault for the feeble laws they passed out of greed. Leave the naives the hell alone!!!!
