Deaf children face an uphill battle in our hearing world. When we, the hearing folks, think of them at all, it's typically either to denigrate them as stupid or to patronize them as special or remarkable. Generally, we don't think of them at all. We certainly don't care about funding programs that help deaf children access even something as essential as education. The kids in the video are lucky; they go to a deaf school with teachers who sign and with hard-working, probably overworked, interpreters. Most deaf kids don't have that choice. They are mainstreamed into public schools where the teachers don't care, and where one of the first items on most school budgets that gets cut is funding for interpreters. And, then they will blame the deaf child for falling behind. All deaf children want is access to the education that hearing children take for granted. We all need to demand more funding for interpreters in our public schools.

Thank you, Christeen. I'd send you a green star, but the system says it's too soon.

Faither, I would send you a green star, but Care2 says it's too soon since the last time. I will try to post more Deaf news and Deaf culture articles in the future.
