On April 5, 1973, exactly 40 years ago, Pioneer 11 blasted off from Cape Canaveral for a risky mission that would take the small satellite dangerously close to Jupiter's surface and through Saturn's outer rings.

A fascinating slice of history, now the type of event being cancelled left and right because of monetary concerns. I think the advancement of knowledge far more important than saving a few dollars here and there, but perhaps that's just me...
