There's extensive evidence that pigs are as smart and sociable as dogs. Yet one species is afforded affection and respect; the other faces mass slaughter en route to becoming bacon, ham and pork chops.

thank you.. nice article.. am a vegetarian for more than 50 years and i believe that all manifestations of life are precious and deserve love and empathy.. actually the interaction with animals frees us from the shackles of having to be a predictable somebody .. we can be free to be silly in company of animals.. the company of dogs or cats bring so much delight and happiness and is truly stress-busting.

Thank you for this post ! Unfortunately some people have difficulty with having compassion and respect for something that either does not look like them or feel is like them. Whatever it takes to get people to recognize as Suju Bala points out ~ that all life is precious ~ all species enjoy their lives ~ and are entitled to live free from harm and exploitation. Period.

Sadly the meat & pork industries have infected the comments on the Yahoo article spouting untruths and attacking anyone who seems remotely veggie while rating each other up. :(

Piggies are just as special and smart as dogs. Piggies love tummy rubs and kisses just like dogs do. They're incredible animals. It's a real shame humans see them as nothing more than food. They deserve to be respected. Thx Giana

All animals are smart in their own ways and none should be eaten. All deserve respect but pigs are used as slurs in so many ways. Cops are called pigs, men act like pigs when they are inappropriate, people who are lazy or messy are pigs, people who eat to much are pigs to name a few. Well, using traits of animals is wrong. People are just being people in their negative ways. Pigs are indeed smart as are dogs. To compare them is ridiculous-they are two different animals. It is most of the people who are stupid, not the pigs, dogs, or whatever other animal people choose to denigrate.

Maybe because pigs are not "pretty" they get less concern than dogs. As far as I am concerned, ALL animals are smart, have awareness and feelings and should not be unnecessarily exploited for human pleasure or benefit.

It would not be surprising

All animals are special and as opposed to us humans, do not wantonly kill. Animals kill to survive and it is their only modality to feed themselves. Humans have many, many options. Am not vegetarian (work in progress) but could we at least be less CRUEL in how we house those that feed us? For a supposedly Christian nation our country vaunts itself to be I cannot wrap my head around the idea of state mandated executions of convicted killers, life in prison yes. How can someone expect us to be humane to animals? We are not humane to each other.

Please have mercy on pigs and don't eat them! They suffer so much in every step of factory farming- the mama pig confined to a metal crate, the babies castrated and tail docked without anesthesia, being electrocuted to stun them before having their throats slit...

Even a snail can presume of more brains than those who humans who feel superior to the rest of other living being. All animals are precious for their contribution to this earth and for being here, and every single one of them has a reason for their existence, and I truly believe that reason isn't for human consumption or exploitation.
Who cares if a dog is smarter that a pig or vise versa? They are both just as precious and deserving to keep and enjoy their lives.

I've heard for decades, pigs were the smartest animal in the world. I guess that is one reason the Christian and Jewish communities are forbidden to eat a hog according to the Bible.

Deuteronomy 14:8 (KJV)
And the swine, because it divideth the hoof, yet cheweth not the cud, it is unclean unto you: ye shall not eat of their flesh, nor touch their dead carcase.

Leviticus 11:7 (KJV)
And the swine, though he divide the hoof, and be clovenfooted, yet he cheweth not the cud; he is unclean to you.

Isaiah 65:4 (KJV)
Which remain among the graves, and lodge in the monuments, which eat swine's flesh, and broth of abominable things is in their vessels;

Isaiah 66:17 (KJV)
They that sanctify themselves, and purify themselves in the gardens behind one tree in the midst, eating swine's flesh, and the abomination, and the mouse, shall be consumed together, saith the Lord.

Dianne D., pigs may be intelligent, but hardly the smartest animal in the world, and honestly, quoting Bible verses proves nothing. I agree with Ruth to an extent in that everyone (meaning people) and every species has a purpose, but some species seem to have none except being food for another (mosquitoes, flies an slugs, for example).

It shouldn't be important as to a species intelligence as to whether it's consumed for food or not. If that were the case, we'd surely not eat anything but rocks........of course, that's the goal of vegans and "breatharians". The question of which is smarter, the pig or the dog shouldn't matter to anyone, including those who DO eat dogs or those who don't, but will eat pork. The important thing is that the animals are treated with respect, both before and during the slaughter process.
