It's the latest front in food legend Alice Waters' promotion of eating fresh, locally grown foods. Waters told "60 Minutes ...... " that "the symbolism of an edible landscape at the White House" would do much for her cause.

“I think it says everything about stewardship of the land,” she said, cracking a joke about the president holding a press conference on a compost heap.

“I’m very hopeful.”

Waters may have a partner in her efforts – Michelle Obama has begun promoting the idea of eating local foods.

It's a start in the right direction.

I think it would be a great idea for the white house to have an organic garden, be a shining example of what many folks should be doing. Lose the lawn and plant some food, etc. Be the Change! thx Blue! :)

The White House in bloom:
On Friday, Michelle Obama will begin digging up a patch of White House lawn to plant a vegetable garden, the first since Eleanor Roosevelt’s victory garden in World War II. There will be no beets (the
president doesn’t like them) but arugula will make the cut.

Agreed on the beets. There will also be honeybee hives. Cool!
