The Left, in all parts of the world, must unite now to defeat austerity. The Machine is choking the world, people.

Efforts to achieve such unity of the left is possible if we maintain an atmosphere of tolerance and eschew subjective responses to past encounters and disputes. -

No more fights between ourselves. Check out the size, indifference, and depravity of the Machine, our real enemy.

Only our HEARTS should be our leaders....there's no space or time left for egos.

You are absolutely correct, Betsy, we, the left, must all stand together and not waver or be bullied. We are tolerant and brave and must meld together like glue so that the others cannot divide and conquer us. We will overcome their bigotry and lies with our truth and fairness.

Leftist Jargon that is based actually on languages other than English {or one's native language},
is based on OBSOLETE 19th-century ideas of Economics that don't fit the modern Corporate world,
and Jargon that is used, besides by ancient and doddering Lefty die-hards, used mainly by Academics in obscure and useless publications, speaking only to and among themselves!
Well, am I right, or am I right???

Blind commitment to Ideology and the Jargon or in-group language associated with those Ideologies, has RIGHTLY turned off the "average person" from uniting and joining with such narrow groups.

For example, we are all - and like to think of ourselves as! - INDIVIDUALS, and rightly resent being lumped with "The Masses", that sounded so good in the 19th century when a "Vanguard Party" of the Educated Elite was supposed to "lead" the herd of undifferentiated Workers, poverty-stricken, illiterate or barely literate, exhausted from hours of physical labor, made stupid from malnutrition and brainwashing by the Church.

This NEVER WAS a really good approach - but now, such an approach is a SURE RECIPE FOR DISASTER, AGAIN AND AGAIN AND AGAIN.
"Unity" does NOT mean, that we are not each and every one of us an INDIVIDUAL - and we can and do and should and MUST, THINK FOR OURSELVES!
The Old Left - and the New Left of the '60's, too! - their idea of "agree with the Leadership or we'll expel you from the Party" - that will NEVER WORK with Human Beings - with getting single-celled Amoebas into line maybe, but never, never, ever with actual People!!!

Thx for the article Betsy. You got to admire their optimism.. Hope there will be enough people willing to do more than sign petitions, at least call their lawmakers regularly. These days when everyone opposing govt and/or the capitalistic rule is regarded a "terrorist" it's not so easy to exercise "militant defense of social programs such as Social Security, Medicare, food and housing assistance, aid to needy children, Head Start and environmental protection."

This seems a must in order for "the people" to succeed (rather than the greedy bastards). I don't see that it'll happen under the umbrella of one group, however. But the various left-leaning groups must support each other in order for any to succeed. I'd like to see a major push for the advancement of the STEADY STATE ECONOMY as a solution to our capitalist system gone awry. We must give up the idea that bigger is better and more is one's goal in life. Wikipedia has an article on the steady state ( or zero growth) economy if anyone wants some quick info. Thanks, Bee.

The Hierarchical way of organizing on the Left, has proven a DISASTER - "Support the Leader - me! - or be expelled!" just shows what any "Leftist" or any other Party, would be like if GODDESS FORBID, they ever actually came to power!

A "Horizontal" way of organizing, is being experimented with by the Occupy Movement {which like the Dandelion, has DISPERSED ITS SEEDS, NOT gone away!}.
INNOVATIVE ways of "Unity" must evolve. FORCED Unity under ANY pretenses whatsoever, will NEVER NEVER NEVER NEVER SUCCEED...

[The "success" of a Forced Unity, would actually mean its FAILURE... just ANOTHER top-down, repressive Hierarchical system, no different from the old Hierarchies...]
The Internet itself, is a way we can organize and express our Unity and Resolve, HORIZONTALLY...
From the GROUND UP, and NOT the Top Down...

I completely totally absolutely agree with you, BMutiny.

If every non critical decision was made by consensus, it would take much longer to make decisions but then everyone would understand more about the motivation and needs of the people standing UP to the MAN with them or camping in the forest with them or sitting beside them in a drum circle.

Knowing all of the whys that bring others to stand with them does make each one more aware of how crucial their own actions are/were.

YOU stood there so YOU know.

Of course, I do say "Goddess Forbid or Goddess Willing". Pagans never send out missionaries......always a self selected path as most nature/earth based spiritual paths are unless one is fortunate enough to be born into that kind of path such as many Indigenous people are.

There's a book I just finished reading, from the Library, I forget its title - but, it's about how the Farm Workers Movement, the famous Grape Boycott, with the legendary Cesar Chavez -
how it STARTED grassroots, and then became more & more hierarchical, as in some seemingly-inevitable way Cesar Chavez concentrated more & more power in his hands -
started EXPELLING people, hard-working people who had been with him since the beginning, but didn't agree with him 100-and-1 %!
And it became like a CULT, with a "privileged in-group" - and finally, of course, the so-promising Farm Workers Movement just FELL APART.
Chavez is still a legendary figure and a lot was accomplished, of course. But, IT DIDN'T LAST.
THIS is the sort of thing we have to WATCH OUT FOR. We should LEARN SOMETHING....

YEP! BMutiny. EVEN Care 2 has cults ETC. Every human endeavor has human beings with human flaws. If I could see the body language of some of these people, I would see through their shams. Not possible here though..

But you and I are past being gullible enough to buy self assigned leaders for very long. Other workers will have to learn caution in their own time and through their own experiences.

I was mainly with SNCC and SDS and the Rainbow Family. The Rainbow Family has perfected consensus. Stokely was a sincere bright burning soul. I never saw Tom Hayden on the street, on TV yes. And, Tom Hayden put money into the movie "Rebels With A Cause: The Story of the SDS." He was such a super hero in that movie, he hardly needed the other 35,000 individuals holding up a fist in a red glove.

The left must organize to defeat the corporate owned and operated two party system. Both of the capitalist parties bait and swtich, buck pass, and finger point, but are united in service to a single corporate agenda of exploitation, endless war, and environmental destruction.

There's a lot of passion in the article.....BUT! But look at Greece! All of the left is united with the people; they've been protesting FOR YEARS! Yet the Troika continues to demolish them.

I can't say how many General Strikes the Greek unions have held since the beginning of austerity in 2010. I saw a TV report in which I found out that retired people have had their retirement pensions decreased 3 or 4 times! Even a former diplomat was barely scraping by, given the degree to which his once-comfortable retirement pension had been strunken a bit more after each of 3 or 4 austerity plans went into effect over the last 3 years.

The unemployment rate for young people is over 60%!

While not the measure that hit them hardest financially, I think the most traumatic measure was the govt's June 11, 2013 decision to shut down -- overnight! -- the Hellenic Broadcasting Corporation (ERT), the national television and radio broadcaster, with the shutdown to go into effect immediately ! ERT had never stopped broadcasting for the last 70 years! (The govt plans its reopening with a pared-down staff in the future.)
"Many Greeks have little love for ERT journalists and the state broadcaster is often cited as an example of inefficiency, overspending and jobs given in return for political favors. But the speed and suddenness of the shutdown - ERT screens abruptly went black just before midnight - stunned Greeks long used to the slow pace of public sector restructuring. "This government's ways are dictatorial: they decide and they order," said 45-year old Panagiotis, who declined to give his full name for fear of losing his own public sector job. " (Crisis And Chaos Return To Greece Following National TV Shutdown)

The US doesn't have a national broadcaster, so it may be difficult for Americans to imagine the shock felt, but ERT is the Greek equivalent of the BBC, so just try to imagine if Cameron shut down the BBC!

"Greece's Parliament narrowly approved a new batch of austerity measures early Thursday (July 17th), including thousands of public-sector job cuts and transfers, demanded by the country's creditors to keep vital bailout loans flowing.were approved, ... "pav(ing) the way for 15,000 layoffs by the end of next year. " The Greek Parliament agreed "to put 25,000 civil servants, including teachers, municipal police officers and school janitors, into a “mobility plan” by the end of the year, docking their wages ahead of forced transfers or dismissals." "Outside the Parliament building in central Athens, more than 5,000 Greeks protested the measures in a boisterous but peaceful demonstration, holding banners that read, “Let’s lay off the government” and “Traitors!” "

Thank you for this Betsy. There are excellent points being made here. The old adage of "follow the money" applies to the so-called austerity programs. Look at who is paying the biggest price in these programs and see who ultimately profited from the financial crash. As the gap grows between the wealthy and the rest of us, tipping points are going to be reached. The "rest of us" have few friends in the government so we are going to have to focus our combined creative energy and resolve to effect sweeping changes in the way our governance is structured.

It's not inconvenient to me John, but we can't help anyone until we get ourselves in working order.

If the right and all that goes with them continue to rule our every move, you can be sure there will never be a shortage of coups and rebellions in other countries our war machine isn't starting, continuing or financing.

And leaving high and dry if it suits them

Thanks for posting, Betsy. I do believe the left is uniting worldwide. The first hint, after the Arab Spring was Occupy and the Global Revolution. I truly enjoyed that website as long as it was up, and was disappointed to see it go. But, Occupy continues...I get their mailings and calls to action from my local Occupy as well as their national mailings.
The problem with some "leftist" groups as I see it is their unadulterated support of various members of Congress. This is so false on so many levels! One "left-leaning" member sponsors a great bill which is well supported by Progressives....then later, that member next votes on bills of great detriment to us, but a cash cow for corporations.

Another huge problem is that many bills are introduced which we greatly support, and call on our Congress critters to support. Then, that bill is rewritten, (by lobbyists & congressional aides), with horrible amendments added...effectively nullifying the original intent of the bill. So many of us sign petitions and send letters for the support of the original bill, then have to write and ask them NOT to support the new one. It gets pretty confusing to some.
Don't even get me started on what happens behind the "closed doors" of Congress when making changes to the bill, which we don't even get to learn!

So many of us will support a candidate in a primary....make phone calls, knock on doors, donate....If they win, they change their positions during the general election. But, of course we can't support their nutty opposition, so we continue our support. They then get elected, and are beholden to corporate donors over us, and vote accordingly. (Insert loud scream here).

What I hear in this is that we need to avoid arguing about what is the most important issue which needs to be attcked first, and realize that all will benefit from every victory. If, for instance, you are more worried in your heart about the environment than about austerity, realize thatmajor victories against austerity will unlock fhe funds needed to put teeth in environmental progress (and, I believe, pretty much nothing else will.)

The old saying: "United we stand, divided we fall" still rings true. The old 'lefties' are still there and a new generation of lefties has presented itself. But the old have become divided and can't link with the young, who are divided too, each very busy with their own niche. But all the different topics have much more in common than we care to see: a left way of thinking, a way of looking at the world and a way of caring for the world. So if the fight against austerity can unite the left, so be it. We must stand again.
