The Congress of South African Trade Unions joins all South Africans, and millions more all over the world, in mourning the sad loss today, 5 December 2013, of the greatest ever South African and most inspirational leader in our struggle for liberty and democracy, our beloved Comrade, Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela.

Comrade Madiba inspired all those fighting for freedom in South Africa and around the world. He suffered long and brutal incarceration, but never became embittered and revengeful. He was elected as our first democratically elected President, but remained a humble and modest servant of his people, who never put his personal interests before his commitment to the struggle.

Thanks for sharing Betsy.

"It is said that no one truly knows a nation until one has been inside it's jails. A nation should not be judged by how it treats it's highest citizens, but it's lowest ones."

Marie Oliveau

Thank you Betsy for the article. This is sad News.

Arlene, Please do not give up on trying to learn english. The person who reproached you had no Right to try to change who you are, or what language you speak. I try to speak to all of the people with no language barrier, using google translate. I may not always make sense, but I try! I write in both languages for better understanding.

Congratulations for your effort, and shame on whomever it was that reproached you!

Nelson Mandela is an Angel. Watching his flock from the Heavens. A truly sad loss for his people on earth.

Ponder, Meditate, Pray for Peace.

Thanks for sharing this Betsy. Such an inspirational man, willing to stand up for his convictions, suffering for millions so that they may enjoy the simply basic human rights that we take for granted. May his life continue to be celebrated for generations to come.

Marie Oliveau {étreintes}

I agree Jess. This site is for the World, not just the English speaking Countries.

I love different languages, and I actually once knew how to speak French, and Spanish. It was a long time ago. I have found many languages spoken on care2. Polish, Spanish, French, Russian and Italian, so far.

Arlene said, " Nelson Mandela is one of those great men who have made history a great proof of love and self-giving. Condolences, Mr. Mandela and forever in my thoughts."

A thoughtful post in any language.

Ponder/Meditate/Pray for Peace.

Thanks to Jess B. for the Mandela quote about jails!

Progress from about 1946 to about 1989 was fought by people who yelled "Communists!"

Now the same power structure in the United States resists having its privileges reduced by yelling more inflammatory words: socialists, terrorists, lazy moochers, appeasers, child killers, dictators, immoral atheists, Islamists, tree huggers, illegal aliens, thieves, criminals, ...

These people even call Obama a Fascist; they are much closer to Fascism (also known as corporatism) than he is

" Resentment is like drinking poison and then hoping it will kill your enemies." For some reason, that particular quote has always stayed with me. Mandela emerged from nearly 3 decades in prison as a man of incredible, admirable grace when he had every right to be bitter. In this, he was the epitome of courage and dignity in the face of ignorance and hate.

The appearance of this spammer in the comments regarding the death of a great gentleman is completely inappropriate. If this idiot expects to make any money from doing this she is going to be a very unhappy person.I am getting fed up with trolls and spammers on Care2 and the complete inability of the authorities to put a stop to it.
Nelson Mandela was an inspiration to all people who seek freedom from tyranny and suppression. He became the first black President of his country and instead of seeking retribution against those who persecuted and imprisoned him he sought reconciliation. He will be sadly missed but his legacy will live with us forever.RIP.

Thank you for sharing this, Betsy. Nelson Mandela is truly an inspiration in the work for a better world. He will always be here as an example to look to.

"Never in the history of humankind has there ever been a voice that has more clearly caught the imagination and the spirit and fired the hope for freedom than the voice of the deputy president of South Africa, Nelson Mandela." -- Harry Belafonte

"And so, we have lost our father. So many, many of us addressed him as Dada, an affectionate term for father. But of course we don’t want to linger and wallow in our abundant tears, for we, yes, wonderfully are able to give great thanks to God for this one who was denigrated for so long, this "terrorist."" -- Archbishop Desmond Tutu
