I support H. J. Res 90, the OCCUPIED Amendment, to amend the U.S. Constitution to make clear that corporations are not people, that corporations cannot spend money in our elections, that Congress and the States can regulate corporations, and that Congress

O = outlawing

C = corporate influence

C = CASH

U = Undermining

P = Public interest

I = in the

E = election process

D = democracy

Media and Democratic Rep. Deutch amendment is a blend of the best ideas:

1. The rights protected by the Constitution belong to human beings (natural persons).

2. Constitutional rights do not extend to for-profit corporations or other business entities, nor do they extend to chambers of commerce that promote business interests.

3. The constitutional rights of other non-profit corporations, such as charities, churches, schools, hospitals, clubs, unions, and environmental groups remain in place.

4. Immediately upon adoption, this amendment would prohibit business corporations and their associations from using money or other resources to influence voting on candidates or ballot measures anywhere in America—at the federal, state, and local levels.

5. Counteracting the 2010 Citizens United case and the 1976 Buckley v. Valeo case, Congress and the states would once again have the authority to regulate and set limits on all election contributions and expenditures, by any group or person.

6. This would empower Congress and the states to control election spending by CEOs and other wealthy individuals, including those rich enough to pay for their own campaigns.

***Please read and sign the petition is support of this amendment.

Sorry to post this here -- it is both off-topic and related -- but, is anyone else having trouble logging in to the Occupy group discussions on Care2? Sorry if it's disruptive but I couldn't find anywhere else to post this question that would reach other participants in the Occupy group

Kit B. (276)
Wednesday November 30, 2011, 6:47 pm

I have had trouble logging on to any group today or yesterday, submission of stories takes 2 or 3 times, many comments are lost and Care2 is S-L-O-W.

Thanks, Kit, for the feedback. Good to know one is not alone. Perhaps it's a sign that Care2 will need to get a larger server to accommodate all the enthusiasm that Occupy discussions are generating here :)

It is absolutely essential that the Outlawing Corporate Cash Undermining the Public Interest in our Elections and Democracy (OCCUPIED) Amendment be passed! This is a very important way that those of us who are not able to join the protesters can lend our support to the cause.

Signed and noted! Thanks, Kit!

Signed #3603 - even though it’s obvious the Secret Government a.k.a. the Plutocracy, Inverted Totalitarianism, that actually dictates what laws and rules will or will not be allowed on the books. Which existing laws will be applied and upon whom they will be enforced. Determine what groups and individuals will be the exclusive beneficiaries of the Taxes paid by the masses. It, they, them, does not give a tinker’s damm what we the people think or how emphatically we petition their puppet government to our causes and concerns.

News flash you won’t see on the Fox (since the revolution will not be televised): There is no people’s government anymore. But of course the Motley Crew already recognizes this as fact. For the fence sitters, the dreamers, wishers, hopers and prayers among us, let me continue. Lincoln’s concept of a “government of the people, by the people, for the people” is a molden in the grave along side John Brown. The same, mass grave, in which the corpse of free enterprise Capitalism, the Constitution, Bill of Rights, along with all the other principals of a free and open society are buried.

All the rest of the nonsense they wave in our faces, like a red cape in the face of the bull, is smoke and mirrors, parlor tricks, flash bang grenades, designed to keep us preoccupied, dazed and bedazzled with a perpetual maze of distractions. Artificially heightened Stress load inducers, inflated Fear tactics, supper doper Sales on the latest and greatest Junk from China, abolishing of social services and paid for entitlements etc. Designed and implemented so we don’t have the time or inclination to STOP, in mass, to look behind the curtain as they manipulate us all into bondage and slavery.

Conspiracy nut ramblings? Not alone, just suppressed by the deluge of BS that allows an after glow twinkle of doubt.

Thank you Hawkeye, well said. Let's all hope and do something to be sure this bill like so many others is not diluted down to a useless collection of papers. Remember the healthcare bill? That began as 30 pages, then to mollify the right it grew in pages as it diluted the actual meaning and cost effectiveness.

What can you do to push this bill? Sign the petition and share it with others, write and call your representatives whether they are House or Senate, fill their offices with letters and phone calls - don't let up. Add the same unrelenting pressure to the office of the president. Write letters to the local newspapers, gather as much information about the out pouring of CASH to buy our elections. This will be a fight and we must be a part of that fight, or shut-up and stop complaining.

Yes, Mary many if not all on Care2 are having the same problems, submission of articles are lost, comments do not get posted, notes are not registered, there are problems with personal messages as well, and most if all are not able to access their groups. Let's hope Care2 will have the problem fixed as soon as possible, by now they are well aware of the impact.

We need to reign in corporate spending on politics. Eliminating it and allowing the states and local governments to limit spending on campaigns.

I hope this helps reduce abuse in our elections. Our biggest problem right now is frauds liek ACORN, followed by that stupid 'corporations are persons' scam perpetrated by liberal pseudo-judge. I only disagree with regulating people who can afford to fund their own campaign; let them so long as they accept no donations. If they accept donations, all donated funds are regulated.

I wholeheartedly agree with eliminating full-blooded corporate personhood. I agree that for-profit organizations should be excluded from the political process.

However, it should be noted that the group calling itself Citizens United is a nonprofit and would still run as it is at present. Anyone can set up a nonprofit and call itself "educational" as have the Heritage Foundation, American Enterprise Institute, Discovery Institute and thousands more to feed specific non-profit groups like Americans for Prosperity, American Crossroads, etc.

Wording of any proposed amendment needs to be far more carefully crafted to cover all the bases and leave as little wiggle room as possible for the army of special interests' agents provacatuer to screw with it.
