The deeper truth is disquieting. The rhetoric of Michele Bachmann, Sarah Palin and Rick Perry about the "real America" is not imagined: They and those who oppose them live in different Americas, embodying different ideals and meaning different things-->

Well Kit I think this explains a lot - as Americans we are split in many ways - and as America we are as well - what a great way to disrupt the American Constitution and create havoc - it disturbs me greatly that so many don't see what is happening - couldn't happen to the USA - well it not only can - it HAS!

It's either going back to the oppressive 1950's or forward to something completely different, I'm choosing the latter.

What that some thing different is, will depend on us and what we do about things happening now.

Premillennial dispensationalism? or P.D, or better yet, the right suffers from PURE DELUSION. I think it's even more than that. They suffer from a deep-seated fear of self worth and failure caused by early brainwashing. How sad.

Is this not indicative of what happened in Italy under Mussolini and then in Germany under Hitler? People get fearful in depressed economic times and turn to those who tell them, not to worry. "I have the answers" and suddenly all the young men were in uniforms and had a job, though the next step would be the inevitable use of the uniforms for war.

For those who embrace the promise embodied in the principles of freedoms, liberties and rights, America is simply an emergent property arising from every American expressing themselves without fear or restraint. To others, being American arises from forcing everyone into a single mold.

It seems the pseudo intellectual thing is to blame us, Christians, just as once folks of a different race were blamed for things that were the fault of only a few radically insane cases.

The denominational churches of today are as wrong as they were when Jesus was here.

Christians have done a lot of good in this world that some are unwilling to admit.

The things said about Christians, ranking us all together are as hateful and prejudiced as the things once said about other races and currently being fought against by those who are gay.

Dang it!!! Stop accusing all of us for the crimes of a few.

You cetainly would not allow the things said against us to be said against you and your groups. If we were to say against sceptics and atheists the things you say against us, if we were to comment with equal hate against you, we wold be banned.

Fair is fair.

And this is not fair.

It is always uncomfortable to see the truth but the truth is that many rightwing republicans have high-jacked the grand old party with their religious bigotry for their own purpose's mainly to return our country to a time when the ultra rich ruled our country with blackmail and bribery now that's the truth weather anyone like's it or not many Christian denominations have been co-opted by these people (bachmann, Perry et-al) and the only way to bring back two parties loyal to our constitution is to expose these frauds return our church’s and our country to the people that they belong too.

That;s another intolerable thing the tea party and the rightwingers have done to this country. By wearing our label but refusing to abide by our ethics, they have made Christians a laughing stock. They have roused unthinking and unwarranted prejudice against us. They have provoked quarreling and false assumptions against us. They have brought hate and bigotry where once there was caring and respect.

I for one did not vote for one person of the Tea Party pursuasion. And I am not the only Christian who is furious with the tea party and Republican behavioral problems.

These are the words I have for all non-believers

Philippians 2:10 that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth,

Romans 14: 11-12

11 For it is written, As I live, saith the Lord, every knee shall bow to me, and every tongue shall confess to God.

12 So then every one of us shall give account of himself to God.

That Mr. Lee includes you and Hitchins.. :-)

You find that when God is removed you find nothing but chaos and confusion... Look around at America today..

I agree with Zee Kallah... At this point there is not one republican candidate I will vote for... But I sure will not vote for obama..

But I will proclaim my love the The Father, The Son and The Holy Spirit.

I also will not be back to this post to comment on what will be said about me.. LOL... I am sure there will be many little comments... All that matters to me is who He says I am... I a child of God, whom He dearly loves and I am truly blessed..

Religion of (any) kind mine included has no place in government.combining religion govt. That's how the world got witch hunts, inqusitions heresy trials,.jihads, fatwas, pogroms etc.The founding fathers put Separation of church/religion and state in the constitution for a very wise reason, So that that shit would not happen here. Start tearing down the wall and you get Iran.

To use Michele Bachmann, Sarah Palin, and Rick Perry as three right wingers who took over the GOP, this article lost its credibility. All three are political losers, and have no chance of achieving political office. In other words, not even the GOP wants them....
Bachmann may have her supporters in the Tea Party, but that's as far as she will get. Perry, and Palin.....please.

MJ M: Come on; the first thing our alleged 'POTUS" did was to an apology tour overseas apologizing for the US and his latest "speech" on how the US economy has never worked or Michelle's sure comment about not being proud about the country until her husband was elected doesn't sound like people who are pro US. Of course when you spend years in "Rev" Wright's "church", hang out with 60's terrorists, or have family and friends with radical left wing leanings those ideas and actions aren't too surprising.

Allan, who would you say have been the ones that are responsible for the current state of the GOP? You do understand that it's the ideology of these clowns that's taken over the Republican Party, not these people per say? As candidates, they're all a joke, of course.

Kit B. (276)
Friday December 16, 2011, 4:02 pm

Well Allan, the folks the GOP have given us for consideration, from Bachmann to Romney and all in are not exactly people that talk in terms of solutions. Rather their only focus is on what is not done, (thanks to Congress) and which war they want next, Iran seems the primary focus.

I think we should not only apologize for our outlandish, colonialist behavior but, begin new policies visa-via the our involvement in other countries. No one can sell or force democratic ideas on others any more then one can fight a war of ideas - which is what terrorism is currently about.

Interesting topic/read with what I found to be some very good comments about it..with the exception of a couple rightwing and or teabagger religous zealots comments ..which..in my opinon are just more proof of religious insaniTEA trying to take over the entire politcal scene and or their racist thoughts poping up on what would otherwise be a really enjoyable and interesting discussion about the 'topic' of the thread. Enough said by me at this time. I really am trying to take Kits personal request to heart for the sake of her threads..especially on this thread, as it would be sooooooooo easy for myself to ...go there.. at this moment !

What a p!ss-poor connection! AlterNet should be ashamed! The Nazis, theocrats, and feudalists are still not as bad as the Socialists and Communists that have been infecting the former Democrat party with anti-Americanism and hateful rhetoric since 1963. All these extremists, Nazis and Communists both, should be exiled from the USA unless they commit provable crimes, in which case they should be tried and shot.

Friends, do not forget the United States is the youngest country on earth (Please correct me if I am wrong.) We are learning an extremely painful lesson. My solution is to tear this nation down and rebuild. I think/hope this is where OWS is heading.

Our country sorely lacks ground moral character. The world is descending into godless chaos. All human institutions are irredeemably corrupt; can you name one that is not? Our banking institutions fair or not? If you are lucky your biggest purchase is your home, how does the banking institutions rate there?

Why should our government be allowed to exempt themselves from healthcare, taxes, stocks and the list goes on but the buck does not stop there?

Conditions in this world are steadily deteriorating our ancestors were man of faith and moral character. This article is the opinion of one person, even through there is good points researched, it sorely lacks the bigger picture, and much is left out. There are haters in every group.

Merry Christmas! (Micah 1-7).

Jo Patterson "Friends, do not forget the United States is the youngest country on earth (Please correct me if I am wrong.) "
You can't be serious. Canada became a country in 1867 compared to the U.S. 1776. There are TONS more countries younger than the U.S.
http://didyouknow.org/lists/independence/
I have no idea how anyone could even think this, let alone state it as a fact. Makes you wonder how many skewered ideas as 'facts' are extant in the world about things.

Good old Adolf Shickelgruber wooed the German people with a perfectly good sounding, nice sounding line of "one people, one nation, one leader'. Sound good doesn't it! Sounds especially great to a nation floundering around in confusion and unrest and bad conditions and needing something stable. Unfortunately, the individual saying it was Hitler, a psychotic.
Which shows however than anyone can say anything. Nothing illegal about it. Even a serial child rapist intent on murder or rape can say perfectly nicely to a child "I love children' 'I wouldn't hurt you for all the world' 'You can trust me' 'I'm your friend' etc. etc. etc.
All depends therefore on the individual behind the words.

All of us who really care about this country will have to step up and work harder for the good life we have; remember GOOD PEOPLE worked hard and smart to get us to this good life. In the 1960s there were two popular books 'A Nation of Sheep' and 'The Ugly Americans.' Both are applicable today (think, US military killing innocent people with drones). Yuck! Peace to the entire world.

MJ M/Kit B: Why is it when you alleged “progressives” have no facts or legitimate response to comments from conservatives it is either change the subject and/or attempt to impeach the creditability or legitimacy of those posters without anything more than vague nasty remarks with no substance???? The real American haters have always been the left and that is the core of the current Dem(agogue) Party with its current leader, the Marxist in Chief, being a charter member of the hate club. His alleged daddy was a Marxist, his mommy a commie, his mentor a radical Red, his buddies 60s left wing radicals, his alleged “preachers” all left wing ideologues, and his administration riddled with the same cast of US bashers/haters. Unfortunately the facts don’t meet your radical wishes.
