In recent months, the need to build progressive strength in cities, towns, counties and states across the country has become crystal clear. Conservative coordination across state lines has led to assaults on workers rights, voting rights and women’s rights, and only an energetic, well-coordinated progressive response has prevented far more extensive damage to our democracy.

Mississippi soundly defeated a ballot initiative to legalize “fetus personhood.” Maine saved same-day voter registration at the ballot box. As The Nation’s John Nichols has so brilliantly laid out in his new book Uprising, the people of Wisconsin employed an inside/outside strategy to fight back against a right-wing attack on workers’ rights. Dozens of towns and states have passed resolutions calling for the repeal of Citizens United.

Increasingly, citizens and progressive politicians have begun to win sensible reforms. There have been key wins on paid sick leave and the minimum wage—common sense reforms that benefit the 99 percent. Gay and lesbian equality has advanced at the state and local levels.

The spirit and urgency of Occupy has inspired organizations and activists to work more nimbly and collaboratively—and has reduced some of the turf war fights that often plague these efforts.

Occupy's crystal clear perception that "capitalism is the crisis" is so very powerful and so undeniable that the enormity of the challenge to progressives, etc. is creating a high degree of harmony between groups.

I feel we are being allowed to win certain battles - but not others - a false sense of achievement?

It is obviously that the right have their counterforce down...just look at how many of them are posting thread after thread currently on care2...often many after the other as if to push other threads to the back pages and do so without fear of very many from the right going on their threads to face off with about their tabloid/B.S./Lies/outragious attacks on the left ..and their free for bashing of Obama in hopes of turning people off as to their voting at all in the next election. A Karl Rove influenced action if there ever is to be another..and there will be plenty of his between now and the next election..on that we can be sure.
Unless we counterforce with our presence, not just mine :-) and a couple of others only who do so reg. on their threads, they will take over the site by turning off so many from the left or center of things that come to care2 who will read their crap threads...or it will be shut down one should another GOP reach the WHite House. ..in my opinion.

It is said that we can not over look local events/actions of politicans no more than those at Federal levels..well it's time to stop over looking the propaganda machine that's at work full force here on care2 either , in my opinion.

I know this was not on the track completely with the topic but the topic struck a cord wihin me to cause me to post this comment as it's my opinion that we are being attack right here, from our own back yd. so to say and to me that is no different than any other level when it comes to political debates/discussion and or show of counterforce. It's time to counter their attacks on us from our own progressive back yd...or so I believe. While doing so we will be helping ourselves in uniting together in our own peoples counterforce..beyond that of party lines..in my opinion...but we must start somewhere and right here at home seems a likely practice field if nothing else :-).

By the by Kit, I posted this link on a rightwing Obama bashing thread...posted by Pink I think it was . So their group might be coming to a comment nearer to us at this moment that one might think. Even though I doubt that they want to learn anything other than their own efforts to take Obama down by turning people off to voting period, some might be curious enough to check this thread out. That is why I posted my above comment actually as this thread is what I have on my mind whenever I go to one of theirs ...at least the 'counterforce' part of the topic that is. I think out and above board is the way to go...We aren't going to take their lies and B.S. being so often spread via care2 anymore ...at least that is my thinking and has been for ..well however long I've been a member on care2. The choir is always enjoyable to discuss things with but as with the Occupy movements...a clear and present presence says to all...we've not taking it any more and we're certainly not overlooking those who helped the past administration sell us out to the corporates during the Dubya years to the degree that administartion did during their wars for profits and diversion and divison years. We' re not going to hide behind close groups and plot as they do, instead we are going head on with their lies and atttemps to turn off voters. Up front and personal so ta say.

Does anyone else see an irony here --- ALEC (male name) versus ALICE (female name)? Just occurred to me as I was reading and thinking of the war on women among other things.

I think the article is spot on --- the creation of a progressive network, not only to help progressive legislators, but also to work at educating the people. One thing that the Republican/Teabaggers do well is appeal to the low-effort thinkers --- people like regular Faux Noise watchers who say if it's on Fox News, it's true, Too many people, after a hard day at work, want low-effort news etc. The education part has to come out on several levels to reap the benefits. As Nancy C says below "Grassroots and progressives with an organized, contributing network...YES"!!!!!
