The church claims that Farley's views on masturbation, homosexuality present a "defective understanding" of Catholic theology.

I haven't read the article yet, but "defective understanding"? Now that's funny, talk about the epitome of a poor choice of words.

I think it's worth noting that book is not new, the Vatican did spring it up in sales by it's denouncement. So perhaps a thanks is due the boys in robes for helping get the word out on this book. It was not their intention but the result of their scathing blast against the author, Margaret Farley.

From the article:

The Washington Post points out that before news of the Vatican’s objections to the book spread online, Just Love: A Framework for Christian Sexual Ethics sat at No. 142,982 on Amazon.com’s bestselling-books list. By Tuesday afternoon, it had soared to No. 16. Not bad for a book that's been in print for more than half a decade.

The book, by Margaret Farley, a recently retired religious academic at Yale, was first published in 2006 but came under investigation from the Vatican four years later for its conciliatory views on masturbation, homosexuality and remarriage after divorce. The Vatican's official critique urged that the book not "be used as a valid expression of Catholic teaching, either in counseling and formation, or in ecumenical and interreligious dialogue."

they wish to own you. Why do they speak for God? God did not tell me he gave them permission to do so.

The Catholic Church is quickly becoming irrelevant and they (the hierarchy) can't stand it. They will cling to their dusty old dogmas for as long as they can.

I'm assuming Farley is a nun? She is described as a woman who taught Christian ethics.Interesting, as soon as the book started to receive attention, the powers that be jumped on it.

Nuns are fighting back!
Nuns as a group are being "investigated" by the Holy Inquisition {yes, it still exists, they call it something else for PR reasons!}, for being too focused on the Poor, and not spending enough time persecuting Gay People! YES, REALLY! REALLY!!!

"Groundswell, an initiative of the Auburn Seminary, is offering free “I Support The Nuns” stickers to all those who support and defend the nuns' solidarity and continued resolve to focus on the physical needs of this country. You can claim your free sticker here: http://groundswellas.nonprofitsoapbox.com/i-support-the-nuns"

The Vatican's statement, which declared that Farley's book presented a "defective understanding" of church teaching, sparked widespread interest in the obscure text; online sales then followed. For her part, Farley said Monday that her book was never intended to parrot official Catholic teachings on sexuality and instead sought to help them evolve, as with official views on usury and slavery.

The Post notes that the controversy recalled a decree from the Vatican last month that the largest group of American nuns overhaul their organization because of "radical feminism."

THE WHOLE CATHOLIC SHTICK, IS TO HATE, LOATHE AND FEAR THE HUMAN BODY -- ESPECIALLY YOUR OWN BODY. ESPECIALLY, REALLY ESPECIALLY, WOMEN'S BODIES. DIRTY, FILTHY, DISGUSTING! SINFUL!!! VILE! EVIL! ABHORRENT!
This is what they taught the Native Americans and Indigenous People all over the world. They had the power to ENFORCE their views, also!

You know, that whole "Eve and the Apple" fairy tale. BECAUSE OF BAD, BAD, EVE, the "Mother of us All", ALL LITTLE TINY NEWBORN BABIES ARE BORN IN ORIGINAL SIN. Because these little tiny newborn SINFUL babies, have BODIES. ALL BODIES ARE SINFUL FROM BIRTH -- and FILTHY AND DIRTY AND DISGUSTING.

So, MASTURBATION IS NOT OK {touching your own body for -- UGH! -- PLEASURE}; having NON-REPRODUCTIVE SEX FOR PLEASURE IS NOT OK {you should FORCE yourself to do the DUTY of the DISGUSTING ACT for the sake of having kids}; and SEX WITH A WOMAN SOMEONE ELSE HAS HAD SEX WITH IS NOT OKAY, IS DIRTY AND DISGUSTING {so, no divorce}.

YEAH, IT'S MUCH, MUCH BETTER TO RAPE AND SODOMIZE LITTLE BOYS, THEN TO EVEN THINK ABOUT HAVING SEX WITH A WOMAN.
And it's ALL THE FAULT OF A WOMAN -- WOULDN'T YOU KNOW IT -- ALL WOMEN ARE LIKE EVE.

THIS, FOLKS, IS THE "OFFICIAL" TEACHING OF THE CATHOLIC CHURCH.
IT REALLY IS.

'The Vatican.... rebuked the Leadership Conference for supporting nuns who openly challenge bishops and church leaders on church doctrines and policies.

The Leadership Conference was formed in 1956, on behalf of The Vatican, and consistently advocates reform within the Church; the group has advocated for women to receive ordination, has created ministries to openly gay Catholics, and has questioned the patriarchal organization of the Church. All of this evidenced by the Conference's motto: "We risk being agents of change within church and society."

The Vatican also took disciplinary action against the Leadership Conference by placing control of the organization under the control of
three U.S. bishops, who effectively run every aspect of the organization now;
they can now decide meeting agendas,
dictate policies,
and even rewrite the organization's religious texts. {!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!}

The Vatican's decision almost immediately created a public uproar and instant backlash against the Church; vigils have been organized outside churches in Anchorage, Boston, Chicago, Dallas, Los Angeles, Washington D.C., and over 50,000 people signed an online petition asking the Vatican to withdraw its statements and its efforts.'

OH, I THINK THE CATHOLIC CHURCH IS GOING TO -- SPLIT!!! -- THAT'S WHAT I SEE!!!!!!!
The Dinosaurs just CAN'T hold on much longer, they are getting DESPERATE.......

Surely the Catholic church (corporation) is rather redundant in the 21st century age of education and enlightenment?... Given that there is no scientific or factually reliable evidence for the existence of a god, gods or the supernatural perhaps its tax free status should be removed as it is selling a product it does not posses?

Pope Ratzinger is possibly not the most qualified person to be an advisor to the way women/nuns should behave, given that the ex Nazi continues to protect pedophile priests and is 'celibate'?

Afterthought and apology...Perhaps not an ex Nazi but certainly a participant in the Hitler youth movement which really has nothing to do with this story...For that hasty comment I apologize to anyone I may have offended and the CEO of the Vatican, the re-branded Mr Benedict, too.

"Defective" understanding? WTF? This pope should clear his own house first - get rid of the corruption, extravagant wastefulness, send the child abusers and rapists to PRISON, direct his underlings to emulate the nuns and care for the poor, sick, and troubled, and THEN see if he's got any more of a judgmental leg to stand on. He'd better hope not, though, since didn't his Divine Boss say, "Judge not, lest ye be judged"?

What a hypocrite.

Ratzinger is always seen with a handsome younger "aide"; I would take it for granted that he, like all the Catholic hierarchy in Rome, is Gay. I have no problem with that, as long as it is ADULTS they are with; except for the UTTER HYPOCRISY of expecting OTHERS to obey precepts that they themselves, don't.

Rome is FULL of Gay Bars that cater to the clergy, so I've been told.
Seminaries are HOTBEDS of "Gayness", have always been so.
As I said, SHEER HYPOCRISY. The Hierarchy REALLY FEEL THEY ARE "ABOVE" the rest of us all.
God gives them a Special Dispensation; only the REST of us, and the Nuns because they are merely Females, have to obey.
Not being married, means the CHURCH inherits anything the clergy makes, not their families.... and Nuns GET PAID NOTHING.......

The Vatican criticized the Leadership Conference of Religious Women, an organization that represents 80 percent of U.S. nuns, for focusing their endeavors on combating poverty and widespread hunger, rather then representing The Vatican's political views....

Why would one assume that that the Pope is gay BMutiny? It is perfectly normal for a heterosexual guy to dress in a heavily decorated frock, wear a funny hat, beads and red slippers isn't it? :)

This kind of stupidity by a religion with excessively prominent perverts (the pædophiles) in high office and based on corrupt edits and translations of a 2 millennium past carpenter philosopher's followers' records is why I'll never be Catholic - and am unlikely to ever follow christianity. Ratzinger is, to me, the deteriorating end of a young man who went AWOL from Hitlerjungen and committed no other known crimes on his way up the religious pile of monkey droppings. That's all he is to me, as I chose to follow Allfather Odin from here.

Nuns should dump the Vatican and get on with their own religion - they have to all the "dirty work" now anyway , I would love to see them sack the Vatican for some loot - give it all away to the poor and set up again without the pedophile protection society...

Well a 'defective understanding' of Catholic Theology might do a hell of a lot more good curing the Church of its addiction to Promoting Pedophilia and Protecting Pedophiles. Because God knows that the Roman Curia headed by Cardinal Ratsucker and having Cardinal 'Running from the Law' Law has done everything within its power to protect pedophiles, provide them with fresh hunting grounds, then give them sanctuary, money, career promotions and protection from extradition to face prosecution for their crimes.

Gee...it's the weekend and the spammers are leaving trash on every one's articles - now that's a surprise....NOT.

Thanks Lloyd that was well said, and directly to the point. These men are given substantial protection from the law. If one of us dared to hide or protect anyone from facing legal charges we would be taken down. Not a billion dollar corporation like the Roman Catholic church. Crimes against children are particularly despicable, equally so are those who protect these heinous acts and then go on with impunity, allowed to rise to highest offices as a reward for grave misdeeds.

If God didn't want us to masturbate, He/she/It would have made our arms too short to reach the nether regions. Maybe they would be on like the middle of the back where we all get itchy and can't reach!
