Human societies see what they want to see. They create national myths of identity out of a composite of historical events and fantasy. They ignore unpleasant facts that intrude on self-glorification.

Kit. Way to go!

This is so important a lens to use in observing what is happening just in America these days let alone around the world. There is the old adage that history is written by the winners who survive to write that history because they slaughtered the other guy. It is also typical of America that funding for the arts is always yanked first by the elitist intelligentsia.

They want to silence those from telling truths they are embarrassed by. Truths that once revealed often eliminate the downfall of societies because they alert us in time about what paths of change are necessary for productive human change.

Those of us who have and/or are already awake, know this. The trick is to get the lemmings to understand it and then all of us ACT to save what is left of this planet. I found the comments of the readers very informative also on the site. Many have valid points.

"We are lost at sea in a great tempest. We do not know where we are. We do not know where we are going. And we do not know what is about to happen to us."

We may be lost at sea but we DO know what is going to happen, if not to us, then to our grandchildren and their grandchildren. We simply are in denial about it. Or those who control the world's resources are. I wonder sometimes if the Koch brothers realize they are making the world their heirs will inhabit, uninhabitable. They can hire paid flacks to deny the science, but these are educated men, they simply put dollars before people, even so, as educated men and with their inherent conflict of interest, don't they somewhere deep inside know they are committing genocide against not only the human race but their own heirs? How do they reconcile their actions with that immutable truth? They can pay for all the lies they want, but they KNOW they are cooking the books, they have to know. Yet they do it anyway. Deep within they have to know what they are doing is amoral if not immoral but they don't care? I really can't get my head around that. I understand the "pile up the money" part, that is simple avarice, but the kill of the species part just would eat me alive, how does it not them? Perhaps they are not fully sane, rational beings. I mean Hitler accomplished quite a lot while being what I think of as clinically insane. Are they like him? Here to show us what evil looks like in human form? Stomach turner either way.

I suppose that may well be true, Kit. I've complained here before about the fact that we seem to have no statespeople left, political leaders capable of looking 50 years down the road and taking action now, even if unpopular, because they know it will be of long term benefit to the country. People who could and did reach across the aisle to get things done in a bipartisan way. It seems now politicians only look as far out as the next election and if it doesn't help them get re-elected, they won't do anything about it. That is why our infrastructure is crumbling, water mains, sewers, roads, bridges, schools and our cobbled together electrical grid. Our leadership is simply not willing to look down the road and act now to do what is needed then. It is not a good commentary on the state of political leadership in this country. The sad part is that the Koch brothers will escape this world without being victims of their own folly, it is those who follow who will bear those burdens. Just isn't right. Then again, life isn't fair, things simply don't work that way in the relative universe. In 5 billion years our Sun will burn out, in half that time it will incinerate earth, I wonder if the people then will have star travel and the will to use it or if they will still be sitting here arguing about how much it costs when the planet goes up in flames?

It reminds me of a joke I hear today:
A woman in a hot air balloon realized she was lost. She lowered her altitude and spotted a man in a boat below. She shouted to him, "Excuse me, can you help me? I promised a friend I would meet him an hour ago, but I don't know where I am."

The man consulted his portable GPS and replied, "You're in a hot air balloon, approximately 30 feet above ground elevation of 2,346 feet above sea level. You are at 31 degrees, 14.97 minutes north latitude and 100 degrees, 49.09 minutes west longitude.

"She rolled her eyes and said, "You must be an Obama Democrat."

"I am," replied the man. "How did you know?"

"Well," answered the balloonist, "everything you told me is technically correct. But I have no idea what to do with your information, and I'm still lost. Frankly, you've not been much help to me."

The man smiled and responded, "You must be a Republican."

"I am," replied the balloonist. "How did you know?"

"Well," said the man, "you don't know where you are or where you are going. You've risen to where you are due to a large quantity of hot air. You made a promise you have no idea how to keep, and you expect me to solve your problem. You're in exactly the same position you were in before we met, but somehow, now it's my fault."

And, if I may add once more:
-Never underestimate the power of IGNORANT IDIOTS in large groups!

a mindless few spoil things for the many..we were all taught as children to tell the truth. then labeled as whistle-blowers snitchs, finks, rats, tattle tales, there's a general sense that its not a nice thing to tell the truth, in the system, in the crime factory of fear.
when we spend our time in a needless search we miss the very things that need not be sought.
needless to say those who imagined the rain to be the reason they can not go out, end up cutting back on their own fullness. by saying I need for I do not have, but we are all. the source..
great rivers are born from drops of water.
make people aware of what is happening in the world, and encourage them. share peace and not just a piece of mind.
life has value beyond measure
Peace and Love

So right Kit. We now have the articulated focus. It's now a matter of turning that knowledge into action. We have to understand that we have the ability to change the status quo. We really can make a difference.
