The culture wars don’t take a lunch break.

A decade ago the Southern Poverty Law Center launched “Mix It Up” to get kids to spend time with classmates of different backgrounds. Since chow time is arguably the most segregated part of the day, on October 30, the SPLC encourages students to “move out of their comfort zones and connect with someone new over lunch.” It says that almost 2,500 schools have agreed to “Mix It Up at Lunch.”

You might never have heard of Mix It Up but for the ultra-conservative American Family Association’s Bryan Fischer who sees in it what he seems to see in everything, (Yes!) a stealth gay plot. The New York Times reported:

Although the suggested activities for Mix It Up at Lunch Day do not expressly address gay and lesbian students, the law center itself promotes equal treatment for gays and lesbians and that philosophy then informs the school program, Fischer said.

“Anti-bullying legislation is exactly the same,” Mr. Fischer said. “It’s just another thinly veiled attempt to promote the homosexual agenda. No one is in favor of anyone getting bullied for any reason, but these anti-bullying policies become a mechanism for punishing Christian students who believe that homosexual behavior is not something that should be normalized.”

“I was surprised that they completely lied about what Mix It Up Day is,” Maureen Costello, director of the SPLC’s Teaching Tolerance project told the Times. “It was a cynical, fear-mongering tactic.” The Teaching Tolerance website is more succinct: “Describing Mix this way is an out-and-out lie.”

This isn’t the first squabble between the two groups:

The law center recently added the group to its national list of active hate groups, which also includes neo-Nazis, black separatists and holocaust deniers.

Association leaders, in return, have gone on the offensive, calling the law center a hate group for oppressing Christian students and claiming its aim is to shut down groups that oppose homosexuality.

Teach tolerance? Peace!?! God forbid! The hypocrisy of the right wing-nuts is beyond measure. They believe tolerance is evil. I am speechless.

Unbelievable! The last thing we need are hordes of right-wing kids hanging out exclusively with other right-wind kids and eventually breeding. Yikes - the mind boggles!!!

Some people can turned the best intentions into an ugly political agenda.

Makes me think of the dangers of inbreeding and why laws forbid first cousins from marrying in most states.

For obvious reasons I haven't heard of "Mix It Up" before but it sounds like a great idea to help reduce bullying and xenophobia. This moron and his group has no understanding of decency or the basics of getting on together which surely must be part of the American family way of life.

Jesus said that you should love your neighbour as yourself. Good strong words with a clear meaning and I wish more people listened to them especially those that claim to be Christian!

"American Family Association" is as much a "HATE GROUP" as the KKK, or Westboro Baptist Church!

These are paranoid, evil people....

Some people see evil around every corner, when in fact they should be looking in the mirror.

Prophet Mohammed said " Gabriel (the angel) continued to urge me to take care of the neighbor until I thought one will inherit him ( in the place of a relative)" Humans are all ONE.

Trust me, there is no "homosexual agenda"...but there is a Gay Mafia! :)

Exactly Abdessalam. We are all the same, we are humans first. Race, religion, sexual orientation, these are superficial compared to the fact that all human beings are the same. We desire to live in peace, be ourselves, pursue that which brings happiness to this short time we have on earth.

This Christian group and I'm not sure one could really call them Christians, is dedicated to one way of thinking, they forgot the one rule that applies to every one on this planet. Treat others a you wish to be treated.

A Gay Maifia? I'm not sure I want to think what that might be about. Though we must know about all groups that represent hate.

I'm so tired of these people finding fault in everything that isn't THEIR idea.

By attacking other people and roups that promote diversity, understanding and compassion thse right wing groups are being true to form and doing what they do best: showing hatred, passing judgement and throwing stones while the windows of their glass houses are filthy. The last thing we need are more right wing hate groups masquerading as pro-family, pro-values groups that think they are society's guardian angels and be the saviors of mankind. Give me a break! Whatever happened to live and let live and love thy neighbor? Thanks Kit.

I read about how the FRC is condemming the Mix It Up Day movement in schools as a "Gay Agenda" plank! It boggles the mind that an organization of twisted hate-filled people could call an idea like having kids sit at different tables of kids for lunch ONE DAY to maybe get a chance to get to know other kids they might not normally interact with an evil plot by the Homosexual Cartel. It would be laughable if it weren't so serious. These groups have built a network of local level political lieutenants on school boards and city councils who can block good ideas like this one. And really, meeting other kids they go to school with is an evil thing???? Sad.
