(Photo: rape victim hides in shame)

Here is an undeniable FACT - 100% of the victims of rape that result in a pregnancy are women. Rape is a crime of violence, perpetuated almost exclusively by men against women. There is NO such thing as a legitimate rape!

The reasons to SIGN this petition:

Twisted and Cruel: New Mexico Rape Survivors Forced To Contact Attackers For Child Support ---

“Forcible rape” is back – and it’s about to rob the women of New Mexico of almost all their rights as sexual assault survivors.

Thanks to Republican Gov. Susana Martinez, women seeking state assistance for babies resulting from rape will soon have to find a way to prove the pregnancy resulted from a sexual assault, narrowing the definition of rape in New Mexico to an almost impossible standard.

These survivors will have to go into detail about the manner in which they were raped, and convince state officials that their stories are true. And if these women are victims of a violent domestic partnership, a date rape, or incest, their rapes will be classified as “non-forcible” – forcing them to contact their abusers and seek child support!

We cannot stand by while women who’ve been shamed into carrying products of rape to term are then humiliated by the state and left at the mercy of their attackers, forcing them to put control of their lives back into the hands of those who violated them in the first place.

Please, join women across New Mexico in calling on Gov. Martinez to end her assault on the women in her state. Don’t let these women become victims again – sign our petition now!

SUSANA MARTINEZ: Rape is rape – and trivializing that fact, and forcing these women to relive their experiences and return to their attackers, is both twisted and cruel. We demand that you end your campaign to redefine childcare assistance requirements using “forcible rape,” and keep the law the way it is!

This petition does ask you to share on FACEBOOK - that is a request and not a requirement.

Sign this petition!

They are against abortions, they are against the state helping those who without the terms of their insane law.....which in too many cases puts the victim, as the article said, back into the hands of their attacker who sure as hell aren't going to do anything to help them without laws forcing them to..and the attackers who do go to trial for their crimes and then to jail if 'proven ' guilty, sure as hell aren't going to help them...[.OK, deep breaths...].

S & N, thanks my friend. It is bad enough when a woman is raped, but to have to contact her attacker, assuming she even knows who he is, it is a real slap in the face. I hope they end their attempt at putting in such a heinous law that attacks the victim all over again.

The attacker should be in jail. How could he pay child support?

Barbara Tomlinson (431)
Wednesday October 31, 2012, 2:53 pm
She is raped again by the State....
then her attacker, who probably will think he has "rights" because he is asked to pay child support, will no doubt RAPE HER AGAIN... AND AGAIN.

Yeah, come to think of it, the Courts would be reluctant to put the attacker in jail, because then how could he pay Child Support???
His being asked to pay Child Support, is supposed to "save the State money" so that THEY won't have to pay to support the child. So, to "save the State money for Child Support", the rapists are NOT going to be put in jail -- but then, they will AVOID PAYING CHILD SUPPORT and so the Woman and her child will end up having no Child Support, and no Welfare either, or not much...

And if the rapist, or incest-perpetrator, is a prominent member of the community, or let's say a football player or sports "star", the woman won't be believed of course, and may well face jail for PERJURY...

Shows that Repukelican women are just as crazy as Repukelican men, just as much AGAINST WOMEN, and brainwashed by the Patriarchal Male Ideology... Possibly the Governor is a Catholic also, believing that "sinning women 'entice' innocent men"... "Maybe because they WANT to get pregnant and get free Welfare..."
Official Catholicism and the idea of "Eve's Sin" are SO, SO SICK.....

This is reprehensible for Martinez to even take this course of action. Let's hope that this woman never is in the position that victims of rape endure, and also, well after the attack.!!! The nightmare is life long, and for a victim to have to prove anything is just downright cruel.!!, and so sad. Shame that a person has to sign a petition for women's rights on this issue, isn't it? I definitely signed, Thanks, Kit for this.

Kit B (276)
Wednesday October 31, 2012, 4:13 pm

After signing the petition there is a request that each person share on FACEBOOK - it is a request, and not a requirement. Care2 is a bit wonky today. Thanks to everyone for signing - please do share this on Care2, with email friends and your family. Let's just get the petition out there - let the people know this is happening. This petition will be delivered to the Governor of New Mexico, thanks to the many who shared the petition action from WATCHDOG, about the horrible injustice in Arizona by Judge Jacqueline Hatch, we reached 25,000 signatures.

This petition deserves no less! Now, please tell me again about how there is NO WAR on Women!!!

Noted, signed, shared and twisted a few more arms to sign. If you are a woman, there should be no question in your mind about signing this. It does not matter where you live, you should be shouting out against this unbelievably cruel law. And the fact that the human who is governing this piece of garbage legislation is a woman makes it twice as horrible.

Like Julian, not sure if my signature took either as I didn't want FB. So I hope as far as I went it took. Not everyone wants to be part of FB, but they sure push it.

I hope women in these States REMEMBER these people who are in Office. I hope the Womens Groups get loud and vocal on it come election time so that every women is made aware and men too. Then if they still vote for this person, let it be on their hands, that they supported this.

Is not enough that these women suffer lifelong from these attacks then to have this thrust upon them as well. If all the men could also have babies this crap would stop.....ALL of it, I guarentee it would.

what the hell is martinez playing at if a woman does not understand the concept of rape & then to be denigrated by the law is a mockery of natural justice and has no place in civilised society. martinez should back her bags & just go she is a disgrace to all women.when men have to argue the rights of a woman from flawed thinking & backward laws & a sister turns her back then she is failing in the basic concept of right & wrong.

I thought Susana Martinez was supposed to be such a smart woman! All the Republicans raved about her at the RNC. Maybe she feels as though she has to support such cruel and misogynistic policies in order to to advance her career in the Republican party. Someone needs to tell her that they don't respect women.

This isn't politics, it is misogyny, pure and simple. Women are human beings, equal to men in every sense of the word, and until women and real men stand up and say NO!!! to this type of legalized crime, the slimy, sleazy, mud-sucking perpetrators of this will never stop.
There are no words to express my anger over this. I cannot imagine how any woman, or any man with a mother, wife, sister or female friend would back something this heinous!

You know-it would be far easier to collect ss benefits for an orphaned child of rape plus it would be one less rapist running around and one or more less women being tramatized all over again. Wouldn't if be nice if rapists met with a nasty, very painful accident that killed them? Then they would actually do some good for once in their miserable lives. The really horrible part is these women are being raped again but by a woman named Susana Martinez. She needs to turn in her woman card because she is certainly not one of us. Normally, I wouldn't wish a rape happen to anyone-I might make an exception for this "woman"-then she might cop a clue though I doubt it. She suffers from 2 empty spaces in her body-the one for a heart and the other for a brain.

Lin Penrose (92)

Noted (finally) and signed without posting to F.B. though. Thanks Kit. Apparently the N.M. Governor has never been approached by a potential rapist. The personal experience might have made a positive (for rape victims) difference in her actions and beliefs. Living through the many repercussions of rape, what so many females have been forced to do, is torture for them and those who care for them.
Males who have been raped, while having some possible physical and mental repercussions, do not have to worry about an innocent child being brought into this world and how to care for them while surviving yourself.

I found the guy - it's Todd Akin who claimed that women rarely become pregnant from what he considers 'legitimate rape' and it wasn't last week, but last August.

Coincidentally, DN! has been broadcasting from St Louis, because they have not electricity at their NYC studio & just yesterday had St. Louis Post-Dispatch political reporter Kevin McDermott on the show, to talk about a report the paper has run on Akin's anti-abortion past.
Amy says,
"Todd Akin is challenging Missouri’s Democratic Senator Claire McCaskill in one of a handful of contests nationwide that could potentially help Republicans regain control of the Senate. Akin’s campaign has been mired in controversy since his infamous claims in August that women rarely become pregnant from what he termed "legitimate rape." A recent report in the St. Louis Post-Dispatch has drawn new attention to Akin’s views on abortion, revealing that he was arrested at least three times during anti-abortion protests in the 1980s."

Signed - thanks Philip A! This makes me so angry that I can barely speak (1049 signatures - also not on FB so hope that works).

Like all the others I think the raped survivor of whichever psychotic SOB committed the crime is being raped again by the state - which presumably will go one better and grant the rapist paternity rights and paternity visits! (If anyone wanted to create conditions where a woman would go quite insane trying to decide between that unspeakable fate and the awfulness of abortion and probably reluctantly choose abortion - they have gone about it well - the vile creeps!). How a 'woman' can sign off on this behaviour will mystify the rest of the civilised world - but not in Tea Party Land.

This petition is so vital.

When I worked on Warm Line, connected with Crisis Line, I received a call from a rape victim which I will never forget. She was gay. Do you think she got any help from the police? HAH!

I do believe most women have experienced rape or attempted rape. The woman does not suffer alone. The man in her life is also a victim. Often it takes time and counseling to heal from the psychological damage done. The relationship of a couple may be destroyed. And what about the child, if one is born? The innocent child is a continuous reminder of the nightmare, both for mother and her possible husband. It would take more than counseling to be able to love the child - adoption would, probably, be the better answer,.

What about the children growing up in such circumstances? Either in extreme poverty or as constant reminders of their mothers' disastrous misfortune,or both. It would be a rare woman who could rise above such conditions and bring up a healthy, sane, happy child that would do well at school and grow up to be a productive and involved citizen.
It is more likely that most such children would help to increase prison populations and the privatized prison corporations' income. In that case, one can understand the political pressure to have such a law.
There may also be a racist element to this law. After all, it may be a bit OK to rape indigenous women and Latinos. Why should the state support these women if they become pregnant, when they can't really be counted as fully human anyway - especially if they are not Catholic.
Properly brought up white daughters of the wealthy would be quite safe from rape because they would be constantly aware of it and never go out after dark unless escorted by their father, brother or husband.

This is just so wrong one cannot even begin to understand the thought process behind something so hideous. Again the control & power is taken from the victim. When will this onslaught of women end. We has become no better than those countries who decide that the female sex is worthless & needs to be treated as such! Definately signed.

That's just great!!!

Punish the women twice.

While, I do believe that the the perpetrators should be contacted (That's a nice way of putting it.), it shouldln't be done by the victims.
This is an example of another patriarchal society, that has absolutely no comprehension of what it means to be raped, and quite frankly, doesn't genuinely care.

How many years will it take for women to start standing up for themselves, and stop permitting men to make decisions for them?
LADIES ~ We can improve our circumstances, if we absolutely want to.
We must stop hiding behind male's coattails.
You can trust, that men who want the best for you, will respect your personal endeavors, to reach independent goals. If they don't, you don't WANT them.

The acused rapist must submit DNA & if positive must support the baby. Rape or not, the baby needs support. It seems Martines is more concerned with dishing out misery to the mother & protecting a possible rapist than protecting the baby. She should not have such power.

It's as if the republicans want these women to die. Why else would they want them to maintain a relationship with their attackers? This is the ultimate in looking down on ordinary Americans. Our lives are worth nothing to them. The lives of women mean nothing to them.
