Dems Look on in Wonder as Mitch McConnell Filibusters His Own Proposal

If Mitch McConnell wants to be taken seriously when he complains about proposed changes to the filibuster rule, he probably shouldn't go out and do ridiculous things like filibustering himself .

If Mitch McConnell wants to be taken seriously when he complains about proposed changes to the filibuster rule, he probably shouldn't go out and do ridiculous things like filibustering himself . He seriously asked Harry Reid to have a vote on the president's plan to keep Congress from destroying our credit rating. And when Harry Reid said, "Okay, let's vote," McConnell refused to grant unanimous consent for it.

That's what happened.

I'll spell it out a little more specifically for you.

McConnell believed that there were Democrats in the Senate, particularly some from red states who will be facing the voters in just two short years, who would refuse to vote for the president's reform of how the debt ceiling is handled. So, he called for a vote.

Harry Reid agreed to the vote, but only if it was a true majority vote. He would need 50 votes out of his 53 members, and Vice-President Biden could break the tie.

McConnell, realizing that perhaps he had miscalculated the level of disgust and contempt the Democrats have for how the whole Debt Ceiling Fiasco went down, insisted that the vote be held at the 60-vote supermajority threshold.

But 60-vote thresholds are for overcoming filibusters. Was McConnell going to object to his own proposal being debated? Was he going to deny a vote on his own proposal?

Well, yes, he was going to do that. All he wanted was to try to divide the Democrats and put some of them on the record as having supported something potentially troublesome for their reelection prospects. He didn't want to be humiliated in front of everybody instead.

So, McConnell filibustered himself. He wouldn't allow a vote on the bill he said should be voted on.

Harry Reid is from Nevada. They know a little something there about calling people's bluffs and making them show their cards. He just ate McConnell's lunch and drank his milkshake.

Does anyone want to argue that McConnell isn't taking his abuse of the filibuster to a preposterous extreme?

The weekend comedy shows should have a field day with this one...and Obama probably has the legal authority to do it even without this bill if Congress doesn't act on it as required by law since the president has responsibility to see that the laws are upheld and to step in (e.g., emergency powers)...the GOP has been telling us all that the economics are a crisis situation with national security implications/impacts using the language of war as metaphors after all........

It's people like Mitch McConnell that give Human Beings a bad name. The word JERK must have been coined just for him. McConnell gets up on the FLOOR and LIES ....blamed democrats for years of reckless spending----(he has a long term memory loss.) S o Mitch McConnell has moved from the upper-middle class of a lifelong government employee into the real upper class ($20M or so net worth) of someone who married a woman with a rich father.
Who just happened to become rich from his connections with the rulers of communist China.
Villagers would say that this is old news, "free" trade is great for everybody, we like Mitch and Elaine, and want him to return our calls, etc.
So they have not reported on the source of McConnell's mega-wealth (relative to the rest of us), and how that source has presumably, for 20 years or so, affected McConnell's positions on "free" trade and its devastating impact on millions of Americans who used to have decent manufacturing jobs.
McConnell and his wife are cheap-labor Republicans who hate the idea of American factory workers making more than $15 an hour.
Because that's what their benefactors want them to do.

Now that is one of the oldest lies around, 'the tax and spend democrats" leaders have increased taxes as the times needed, I only wish that would insure that social programs would be protected. Long term we have a choice to care about our aging population, or let them die as soon as possible.

Yertle the turtle is a scumbag. He's married to one too. Elaine Chao allowed the coal companies to kill their miners without punishment. What a house of horrors.

You cannot currently send a star to Michael because you have done so within the last week.

Michael: According to the article, Mitch "filibustered himself," so maybe it was self-mutilation!

Methinks Senator McConnell should be created Lord Burley by somebody, ANYBODY, so that he might enjoy his retirement (which must be imminent) more fully. That will be ALL, Lord McConnell......

There is one thing I must add that makes the entire thing even more disgusting and ridiculous. This is not the Presidents Proposal, this proposal ORIGINATES with Senator McConnell in the 2011 Debt Ceiling Fiasco. So not only did Mitch the Bitch got his Willy caught in his zipper filibustering a bill he demanded be brought to the floor for a vote, he is the one who came up with the idea in the first place. Although to be honest this is far from being the first Repug Idea that they found totally unacceptable once the President said it was a good idea. First to my mind is the Evil of Evils Individual Mandate that was created by The Heritage Foundation and pushed by Repugs in the 1990 Health Care Battle with Clinton. Just one more in your face proof that the Repugs have no interest in Governing just obstruction.
