On Thursday, one day before the tragedy in Connecticut where at least 29 people were killed at an elementary school, the Republican-controlled Michigan legislature passed a bill that would allow people to bring guns into schools.

Amidst a lameduck session that has spawned a host of right-wing legislation, including a so-called “right-to-work” law and an extreme abortion ban, a “sweeping rewrite of Michigan’s concealed handgun law” was also approved yesterday. The legislation changes Michigan’s gun laws in a number of ways, including making it easier for people to receive a gun permit and opening up “gun free zones,” including schools and elsewhere, to people carrying concealed firearms.

MLive has more:

The legislation is the largest rewrite of Michigan’s concealed weapon law since lawmakers made hard-to-obtain permits much easier for adults to receive beginning July 2001. Applications exploded. There were 351,599 permit holders as of Dec. 1, one for every 20 adults.

Most of the attention on the new bill has focused on provisions allowing hidden handguns in places where they are now forbidden, such as schools, university dorms and classrooms, and sporting stadiums.

The bill now sits on Gov. Rick Snyder’s (R) desk, who must decide whether to approve or veto the legislation.

There is a law in Texas that encourages all college students and professors to have a concealed carry license and to carry guns on campus. Some actually believe that this would mean that should a shooter enter the classroom he/she would be shot before causing harm. This shows an incredible lack of knowledge or understanding about how people, even trained police react to the presence of an immediate threat.

I wonder some times how stupid people can occupy offices of power.

Was this also boilerplate ALEC legislation? Is CT the result Michigan GOP want to see in their communities? Will Snyder bow to reason and morality and veto it? Only the shadow (AKA ALEC?) knoew?

Gun accidents happen. Like the father that accidentally killed his own son, thinking he'd cleared the chamber of all bullets only to have it go off when he set it on the car dashboard. This new law is as crazy as the political wackos passing these laws. So reckless, irresponsible. These officials should be locked up as dangers to society.

Some people in the US think that the UK is a joke as we have very strong gun laws, the fact that the US had a total of over 9,000 men, women and killed in 2011 and the UK had less the 60 does not hold water with then!

What in the hell are these people thinking?!? This thing is so far out of control I don't know how, or even whether we can get out of this mess.

Obviously, there is a whole lot of stupid in Michigan - WT? The only question now is how many will have to die before Michigan wakes up?

The State of Michigan is in serious trouble and if this successful you bet there are more States with whacked out Governors at the ready to follow suit. We are in a heap of do do here in this Country, the children being massacred is the symptom of a greater problem.

We are light years away from the New Deal and the Compassionate Civil Rights we all were enjoying and doing in the 60's. The peace and love of those days are a distant memory now. It all was looking good, too good for some who perferred another vision for this Country, and they worked to take it away, now we all suffer.

What a frightening picture. Because of the Conn. tragedy, Obama has no other choice but to act on a federal gun control law. This is Obama's opportunity to actually make a difference. This will not be an easy fight, as nearly half of this country have relaxed gun laws. The President is going to have to battle state's rights- especially in the South, and apparently in Michigan.
This will be Obama's challenge as a credible leader. LBJ had a political battle to enforce Civil Rights; but he won.
The question of weapons will also open up illegal guns coming in from Mexico - another issue Obama failed to address.Like a domino, it will also bring up illegal immigration.

I'm a Michigan resident and I can tell you that Snyder and his henchmen in the Legislature have been pushing some really nasty stuff in this Lame Duck Session; as they know this is their only chance to do so. The Dems will be taking over many of the Tbagger's seats in January. Many of the Rs were voted out of the Legislature and will no longer have the majority. If anyone has been watching what has been happening in Michigan, you know what I mean. Yes, The Koch Bros and Alec have their dirty hands all over the state. I also believe that some election fraud took place the past 2 elections. It is suspicious that this state could go for Obama and Dem Senators and added more Dem Reps to the Federal Govt. and all these Tbaggers to the State Legislature. We have been going thru 2 years of pure hell with this dictator taking over and raping and pillaging the state. It is my fervent wish that the Rs who elected them have learned their lesson and won't fall for their crap again. I can proudly say that none of these lunatics got into power by my hand. They don't even let the public have any input or the Dem Congressmen to have the floor and give speeches in opposition. This is not a democracy that this Tbagger Governor is forcing on us, it is pure Revenge over the way the election went. They are just crazy enough to put this law into existence too. When we get a chance to rid ourselves of this piece of crap, the Dems will have a lot of work to do to clean up the mess Snyder is leaving in his wake. He would have been voted out on the Recall over a year ago, but the Recall petitions are stuck in Tbagger courts because the Tbagger Secretary of State claims the font is too small on them. It isn't, but that is the excuse they are using to keep us from voting this idiot out. There are nearly double the signatures on those needed to do just that. We need lawyers to come here and straighten out these thieves before there is nothing left of the state to save.

Also, many of the laws in this country should be nationalized, including voting and gun laws. It is pure stupid to have different laws in different states. This is ONE COUNTRY, not fifty countries. These individual laws are dividing us up and tearing the country apart.

I am so saddened by this tragedy that all I want to do is say and write four letter words, put up a pillory in the town square and put every murderer of children there and let the public at them! How barbaric of me and how satisfying it is to think of it. My heart, my soul is crying out to all the children in that school and all the parents.

The concept that a bunch of students and teachers with concealed carry guns they barely know how to use, seldom clean, never practice with not wearing body armor could respond on a surprise basis to a well armored, well armed criminal or lunatic Rambo wanna be who has rehearsed his glorious moment would be comical if not so certainly fatal. The gunman is happy to kill anyone but the amateur 'protectors' have to direct their fire into a weak spot on the body armor of the killer only. What if there is more than one shooter in ideal locations where a swat team rifle expert would be needed to make an effective shot?

All the people who think Joe citizen can do the job should try it out with special laser tag outfits and using guns with a lousy accuracy like the concealable guns most people would use and well equiped seal team members playing the bad guys. Everyone could bet a dollar guessing the number of citizens 'killed' before the bad guys were knocked off. With a unique surprise strategy every week and the prize going up each week there might be a real education and a massive prize.

One method of birth control. Someone sneezes and everyone starts shooting. I went to school in Detroit. Pre guns in classroom. My fellow students were all full of rage and anger (1960) many from broken homes in the projects.. Race riots after school. Challenges in the restrooms. Defiance to teachers. Yeah, what would have happened then if guns were allowed in school back then? It would have total insanity.
This is NOW total insanity. What NRA grant backed this bill in Michigan?

The reason that all these people who commit these massacres have guns is because the NRA wants them to have guns them, lots of guns, the more the better. And, the fewer restrictions the better.

EG - many states have "gun free zones" usually places where the public gathers, schools, hospitals malls grocery stores, the logical places that other than police responding to a call, no one needs to have a gun. The Michigan (lame duck) legislature, riding a right wing high after passing recent anti- union laws, have now turned their sites on women and gun laws. The laws passed in both houses of the Michigan legislature including very strong anti-abortion legislation and a loosening of the rules for obtaining gun licenses as well as opening up "gun free zones".

I hope that the shooting in Connecticut will stay the pen of Governor Rick Snyder, we shall see.
Should he not be moved by emotional reactions to Connecticut and sign that bill, then Michigan will join a few other states in having more "legal" gun toting citizens walking the streets.

Michigan is a prime example of people voting for change without thinking about what that change will mean.
The state government has: voted in the Right to Work law; taken over cities; taken over schools; now it wants to arm people in the classrooms. What a mess. It may take years to undo all the harm this group has caused the great state of Michigan.

This goes right along with the rest of the legislation they are passing. With the exception of Barbara K, we probably don't know the half of it. Yes, ALEC is into guns; "stand your ground" is an ALEC model law. Barbara K, I am so sorry for you and your state.

I have lived in Mi most of my life and I can tell you it is becoming a very scary place. First of all we have a govenor who is a whack job. How he ever got elected is beyond me. The new gun legislation is outrageous. Flint Mi has one of the highest gun related crime rates in the country. I must admit that in my sixties I am taking a class to learn how to shoot. We live in a world that is out of control and the inmates run the show.My heart is breaking for the tragedy that occured this week. God help those families who lost loved ones. It is unimaginable.

As to the right to work law, my husband works in a Union shop and their human resources dept. dang near had a party when the outcome was announced. The people who work there have had three dollar an hour paycuts in the last contract and now they are waiting for the other shoe to drop. Cost of insurance has gone up along with co-pays on everything. Without overtime we live on about thirty thousand dollars a year. The union has had it teeth pulled by this legislation. New hires coming into the shop make just above minimum wage. The Bush era began this assault on unions and now big government along with big business have taken another step to drive a nail in the coffin.
