Congress and the media paid homage to the agenda of the billionaires and Wall Street, with the manufactured “fiscal cliff” PR campaign frenzy that just ended. So now can we get back to the country’s priorities? Can we talk about jobs now?

Jobs Fix Deficits

Now that the idiotic “fiscal cliff’ is out of the way, maybe we can start to get around to doing something that will actually help We, the People, fix the economy and reduce the borrowing. Namely, invest in modernizing our country’s infrastructure and reducing our economy’s reliance on burning fossil fuels for energy.

We are $2 trillion behind in keeping our country’s infrastructure up to date. Imagine how our economy would be humming if we finally got started on that work that has to be done sooner or later anyway — modernizing all the roads and bridges, modernizing the electrical grid, bringing fiber internet lines to businesses and homes, building high-speed rail across the country and all of these things using American-made supplies, steel, rail cars … Et. Cetera. Et. Cetera.

Imagine our economy (and the health of the planet) if we didn’t depend on burning oil and coal for our energy. We could retrofit all buildings and homes to be energy-efficient. We could build more (American-produced) wind farms and install (American-produced) solar everywhere. Everything would cost so much less, our trade deficit would be lower, Et. Cetera.

Imagine how many more people would be working if we did those things. They would be paying taxes, patronizing stores, Et. Cetera.

They would not be collecting food stamps or unemployment. Et. Cetera.

And imagine how all of that would help our government’s budget situation. More people working = less govt assistance, more people paying taxes, more businesses being patronized… Modernized infrastructure = more competitive economy creating more new opportunities. Energy efficiency = lower energy costs, lower trade deficits… This is because jobs fix deficits.

The Plutocrat Agenda Is Cuts

The agenda of the plutocrats is to get government — We, the People — out of their way.

The billionaires tell us that the biggest problem we have is too much government. Think about who benefits if we cut government. If we cut government We, the People get less of the things that We, the People do for each other, the billionaires get less of We, the People in their way.

If we cut government we get less regulation of their banks, and they get less regulation of their banks.

If we cut government we get less worker safety rules protecting us on the job, and the get less worker safety rules making them pay for those protections.

Et. Cetera.

The agenda of the billionaires is also to limit competition. Government regulations work to increase competition. The billionaires are on top and they want to stay on top. A thriving, competitive, opportunity-creating economy is not important to them, their economy is thriving — they are already billionaires.

Et. Cetera. So of course the billionaires want less government. Less We, the People making the decisions means less We, the People in their way.

The Agenda of We, the People Is Jobs

We, the People want good jobs that pay well and provide benefits. We want a modernized, competitive, opportunity-creating economy. We want modern infrastructure that enables our smaller businesses to thrive and grow. We want plentiful good-paying jobs. And when an economy is humming and there are plenty of jobs, more of us can do well.

Do billionaires create jobs or do jobs create billionaires? Why would a billionaire want to “create jobs,” anyway? This is about who has the power. If you believe that billionaires create jobs, you want the billionaires in charge and making all the decisions. But if you believe that jobs create billionaires then you want We, the People in charge, doing things that create lots of good-paying jobs and improve the economy for all of us.

Do We, the People still have the power to do the things that benefit our lives and each other? Again, if democracy creates billionaires then you want democracy to be in charge. If billionaires create jobs then you want billionaires to be in charge.

Who do you think should be in charge? We, the People? Or the billionaires?

"Imagine how many more people would be working if we did those things"

I will ask though, is it the job of the government to do those things or in many cases (IMHO) the job of localities and businesses. One of the local phone/cable/ companies in my area has already installed fiber optics.

Clearly though we do need to start getting people working. If that doesn't happen, we really will go over a cliff.

In rural "fly over" America we have lost countless well-paying factory jobs since 1980.. even though Some are coming back.. it's slowly, and with more strings attached. But hey, Wal-Mart is always hiring!;)

Well it seems that many are taking a new form of wistfulness. Let's get real Jobs are a product of demand. And living wage jobs, well if you are in the right demographics it is a possibility. Other wise good luck. And to determine if the job is viable take the average rent multiply by 3 and that is what the monthly gross should be for a real job.

It should never be the government's role to create jobs. When they cut military spending they will land millions of unemployed people to society and then....well.....here we go again.....high unemployment.

The recent tax hike coupled with the Obamacare penalty tax will be another job killer.

Jobs are created by the private sector. And, when they are faced with uncertainty in terms of higher taxes and penalities they shed jobs.

Obama has created a situation much like a dog chasing his tail.

We all saw what happened when Obama invested in the private sector with his green companies with our taxpayer dollars. They all went belly up. The few jobs it created cost the taxpayers $350,000 per job and poof....they are now gone but not before a few of these green companies took handsome bonuses.

The best predictor of future behavior is past behavior. We won't see the job market turn around until Obama gets his final walking papers in 2016. Then....the salad days will return.

The sad thing is that many of these ideas are not bad and could be quite effective if planned out properly, and no plans have been made. If not planned I feel Diane O will be right another time.

Diane, again you are wrong only 8% of the companies that received Federal funds, for alternative energy sources declared bankruptcy, Just a little time spend checking facts would leave you and your comments a shining star of foolish an in correct information. Thanks for the chuckle, you are always dependable for that.

That would be one limp and old salad. Fortunately, I'm not concerned about the 2016 elections we do have many issues to address before that time.

NO! The republicans STILL don't care about jobs when it might make Liberal policies look good. They avoid it by filling the day with naming buildings after scum bag republicans like Reagan.

Diane is talking about Solyndra. A bush project that was a set up for the republicans to not fund or help, so idiots that know nothing can use them in their hate liberals agenda. Like NOT funding no child left behind. The whole party is full of cheats and con artists.

"We won't see the job market turn around until Obama gets his final walking papers in 2016."

I'll bet you 100 to 1 that you can't explain that statement?

If we had revenue to repair this country and finally we will, government can bring back the jobs that are that cure. Fox lies. Government DOES create jobs, for our welfare. We don't have a spending problem other than the MIC. We had a 33 year long revenue problem. Reagan and HW bush knew that when they realized their mistake. Fox lies!

What makes anyone think we checked off a milestone and are ready to move on to other discussions? The so called cliff was just pushed down the road and we are now faced with about three "cliffs" to hurdle the first being the debt ceiling.

What we should be doing is demanding that our elected officials stay in their chairs and get something done. get the fiscal house in order quickly, cut spedning and make a business climate that will support new jobs. Yeah, it has been going up but look at the kind of jos -service industry, retail (temps) , construction but only in the repair sector thanks to Sandy, and other meaningless jobs at Mal-Wart, McD's and the like. Manufacturing can return if we create the climate and that is not the Democrats way as they prefer a welfare, dependent society. Heck, I'm not even a Republican but I do know how to manage and these guys/gals aren't doing it. I hope the influx of more ladies into the Senate will help lower the testosterone level.
