"You know, it may be your mom isn't as sweet as you think she is, she may be kind of hard-nosed. And so, you say it's my father, he's not paying attention to mom, but you know mom..." he trails off and offers a spiteful little chuckle.

Good article. I have always assumed that Pat Robertson was just bigoted, ignorant, and small-minded. It always seemed that he couldn't go a few months without saying something that was quite simply hateful. Nowadays, Pat looks confused, lost, and tired. One can only hope that he gives all of us a rest from his magical belief system and political tirades and retires soon.

Radical Christian televangelist Pat Robertson with one of his most offensive statements of all time.

It always seems to be the woman’s fault. No really—check this one out.

So, a 17-year-old boy writes in to Maxim magazine, complaining that his father never pays any attention to his mother.

“I’m 17 years old and I’ve noticed that there has been a change in my father’s behavior,” he wrote. “He spends too much time at the computer playing a war game. I’ve noticed how alone my mom feels. I just want my father to spend more time with my mom. What should I do? How can I talk to my father? I feel shame for him. Please help.”

Luckily for this perceptive 17 year old, the radical Christian conservative Pat Robertson is on the case—and his answer is, well, exactly what you’d expect from this radical Christian televangelist.

He starts off with the suggestion that the boy try to get his parents out of the house on some type of romantic weekend getaway.

“The romance is obviously going out of the marriage,” he said.

But then—BAM! Robertson draws the woman-hating card, throws it on the flower-decorated glass table in the700 Club’sstudio and suddenly it’s the mother’s fault.

“You know, it may be your mom isn’t as sweet as you think she is, she may be kind of hard-nosed. And so, you say it’s my father, he’s not paying attention to mom, but you know mom…” he trails off and offers a spiteful little chuckle.

All great advice for a 17-year-old boy growing up in the United States’ enduringly patriarchal society. But wait—there’s more: Now it’s not only mom’s fault for being “hard-nosed,” it’s also her fault for being God forsakenly ugly.

He launches into another story: “A woman came to a preacher I know—it’s so funny. She was awful looking. Her hair was all torn up, she was overweight, and looked terrible…”

So far, this story sounds hilarious Pat, Please continue.

“And she said, ‘Oh, Reverend, what can I do? My husband has started to drink.’”

The hateful punch line is coming. I can feel it. I’m on the edge of my seat.

“And the preacher looked at her and he said, ‘Madam, if I were married to you, I’d start to drink too.’”

Yes! Of course! Because the woman is so ugly—not to mention hard-nosed, we can’t forget that problem—the man has turned to drinking, or playing computer games all day, or doing any number of marriage-killing activities that are not really his fault because, God, how could he help himself? I mean, seriously, with a woman like this, who needs enemies?

Can I get an amen and a Hallelujah?

So, obviously this is a classic example of Pat Robertson saying something that sounds absurdly misogynistic when it’s on television but is something that millions of men across the nation secretly think every day. Those women, with their nagging and ragged hair, are ruining marriages.

In fact, you don’t need to always turn to fringe male misogynists like Robertson to find examples of these women-blaming credos. As Alternet’s Lynn Parramore recently wrote, “The Huffington Post ran a front-page piece just this week with a headline that would make any old-school patriarch proud: “Women: Five Reasons Your Divorce Is Your Fault.”

But if you look at the data (instead of the Bible or silly self-help books), socio-economic factors, sexual violence and lack of access to education are the main reasons for divorce—not a bad haircut.

As Parramore writes:

"Finger-wagging at women usually comes along with the oft-cited statistic that women file for divorce twice as often as men. What we hear less often is straight talk about the social and economic factors that drive the engine of divorce. The fact is that college-educated people are more likely to stay together, and there’s a higher risk of divorce for people with lower incomes and less education. When people are struggling to pay the rent and keep a roof over their heads, the marriage problem isn’t likely to be some kind of deficiency in managing intimacy. Given the fact that divorce is expensive and often leaves women financially insecure, the stressors would have to be pretty severe to lead women of few resources to divorce."

Back to Robertson, one of his few data points to back up his insane claims is that his advice “comes with 58 years of marriage, so I know what I’m talking about.”

Then again, considering that he gets paid heftily to espouse this women-hating b*llsh*t, at least we know that economic stress hasn’t been a problem in his relationship.

If dinosaur it is then a T-Rex it must be, those are not kind things he said. Money may not be an issue for him, but his wife must be a saint. This sort of response to women doesn't just go away because the camera is off. This is how this man thinks.

Oh Mike that is so true, this man some kind of mean to speak of women in this way. Yes, occasionally married people get bored and find a hobby for distraction. That does not mean it's the fault of either one, it's all a part of sharing your life with some one. Good days and not so good days.

Pat Robertson is a sick SOB & shouldn't have broadcast priviledges at ALL! He & his UNchristian Reich-wing sound-a-likes are after the money, not the soul.. causing misery to so many because They are Authority figures for these CONservative Idiots! He has called for assasination of Hugo Chavez - so Christian of him..Abusing women is just a given! I just don't understand how women could have such Low Self-esteem that they would marry CONservatives & promote Reich-wing crap like Pat Robertson!!

Thanks Kathy, for including the Chavez link Pat Robertson calls for assassination of Hugo Chavez (from 2005)..."'We have the ability to take him (Chavez) out, and I think the time has come that we exercise that ability,' Robertson said." ..."Robertson has made controversial statements in the past. In October 2003, he suggested that the State Department be blown up with a nuclear device. He has also said that feminism encourages women to "kill their children, practice witchcraft, destroy capitalism and become lesbians."

What great comments and not a bit of sarcasm to be found - well maybe just a wee bit. This man is no Christian, first he talks about ugly women and condones the murder of someone he doesn't like. Time to retire Mr Robertson.

From the link that Kathy left:

"We have the ability to take him out, and I think the time has come that we exercise that ability," Robertson said Monday on the Christian Broadcast Network's The 700 Club. (Related video: Robertson speaks)

A friend of mine, now in her seventies, raised to be a good Catholic woman. Her, now ex husband of many years, but when she was younger and had 6 small children to care for, was beaten by her husband a lot. She never made any long time friendships, as she was moved from base to base, and with 6 children to care for little time to mingle and when the eyes were black and blue was told she best not be seen.

She finally went to seek help from the clergy, who told her that a good Catholic woman needed to search her soul to see what she was doing wrong to cause him to hit her. That obviously she was failing to do something or not doing some correct, else she'd not be hit.

Another time she went to the CO and begged for protection, she was met with something along the lines, well the men get stressed out from duty, you need to be more understanding to him and make sure you look sexy and give him what a woman should give when he comes home. Just smile and keep your mouth shut.

Pat Robinson has never moved out of those days, in fact there are a lot of them that liked those so called "good ole days" and are trying very hard to have it be very acceptable again at all levels and by society at large. As it is; there are still too many women currently living in conditions like that, and with a terrible economy many more are staying with abusive men as they can't find a way to get out due to lack of jobs, skills, and programs that use to help are now being underfunded or funding exists no more. This is the side of a long recession and lack of jobs that is little discussed but all too many females are suffering under.

This crazy preacher lost his mind a long time ago. He should have explained to the young man that Mom might not have time for Dad's attention because she is keeping the house running and working a full time job. (According to the Department of Labor, 73% of women with children between 8 and 16--no child under 8--are in the labor force.) If she wants to spend the 15 minutes she has off each day sitting there by herself, Good for her!

Women, don't accept the blame marital "disharmony" because of your looks or "nagging". If you're working (or will be when the baby starts school), you are pulling your fair share. Don't accept the blame because you don't deserve it.

It is not the women who are ugly. It is the men who are very ugly in what they do to women, to others and
particularly in society, in extreme right wing politics and right wing religion, in Congress. Witness what the men are doing to women all over USA and in other countries, other cultures, other religions.

Men are the prime cause of killings, with the help of an organization like the NRA, in weapons like guns and automatic weapons. Mass killings have been committed by boys and men.

War on Women is very real all over the globe.

Women are the backbone of many cultures around the world. They do so much more than men could ever do...
in family cares.

Robertson is very wrong about ugly women. Robertson should be "preaching" on and about just how ugly men really are... including himself towards women.

Jesus doesn't let this deranged old codger ramble on, too many people support his crap by watching the program, buying his books or whatever else he's selling and sending in their donation support. Until people realize it is up to each person to support or turn their back on people like this, that these people are allowed to keep going. As with the creeps like Rush Limbaugh, shut off his program, write his sponsors and tell them you will boycot their product and don't buy anything that supports the jerks.

Michael M (60)

Well, Pat is getting old enough to be overcome by nearly any woman-child in an arm-wrestling competition, so his misogyny is becoming desperate.

Y'all no doubt know that perhaps because of his age, he has changed his position on the earth being 6000 years old, as he appears to have been around nearly that long. Look for him early in the begats.

You may or may not know that his christlike compassion for spouses has also led him to advise divorce of any affected by Alzheimers/dementia.

I hope that in the future you will fill in the Pay to the Order of ME, as I can then help jesus out with his terrible need for more cash.

Pat, why don't you just keep your anti-women, ugly thoughts to yourself and spare this poor 17-year-old from having to listen to your crud? God forbid that child should actually believe your advice and become a woman-hating creep like you are. It's past retirement-time for you, so take your ill-gotten gains and live in splendor while the poor get poorer through sending their hard-earned money to you.

Yes and one of the most ironic thing he ever said was "I have a zero tolerance for sanctimonious morons who try to scare people." or is that what virtually everyone says after seeing him talk, I tend to sort of switch off as his voice annoys me and I feel the urge to insert a chair into his ear and that sort of thing, you know the normal reaction to a sanctimonious jerk.
