Be Part of the National Day of Service

President Obama believes that service should be a lifelong commitment—whether it's at the school, community, city, state, or national level. That's why the first family serves on a regular basis, and it's why they're continuing the tradition they started four years ago with a National Day of Service on January 19th, 2013. To honor the life and legacy of Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., the first family is asking Americans to find an event and serve with others in their community.

****Take the pledge or just find what is happening in your community at VISIT SITE***

“Everybody can be great ... because anybody can serve. You don't have to have a college degree to serve. You don't have to make your subject and verb agree to serve. You only need a heart full of grace, a soul generated by love.” — Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Seven ways to get involved:

Help promote a healthy neighborhood through service at your area senior center, health clinic, or Let's Move! initiative.

Put stock in your community’s future by serving in your neighborhood school, after-school, and early childhood programs.

Community resilience
Reach out and support your friends and neighbors in need through service with disaster relief organizations, community gardens, and area shelters.

Economic development
Americans all over the country are starting their own small businesses, investing in green energy, and rebuilding their communities. Help drive your local economy by serving at poverty relief centers or the local businesses that keep your community running.

Veterans and military families
We have a sacred trust with those who serve our nation. Give back to those who have given so much by serving at facilities that provide medical and mental health care, or lend a hand with an organization that honors veterans and military families.

Give praise through service in an interfaith dialogue, church service, or faith community effort. Environment
Better your community by serving with park and river clean-ups, environmental education campaigns, or animal shelters.

Both animal and human shelters NEED volunteers - everyone can find their place, their way to SERVE.

Please do go to Visit Site and be a part of the National Day of Service.

Thank you.

This is yet another one of the best ideas to come from the Obama administration - get involved, give back, pay it forward, do something positive. Make a difference.

Even here in Texas, we have many events planned for just our little community, from helping to rebuild the homeless shelter recently destroyed by a gas leak explosion - to picking apples or signing up for MANY volunteer projects. This not about being left or right, republican or democrat, this is about being involved with your community, being a part of something positive. Be the change. Be the American spirit of CAN DO!

Can't recommend this highly enough! SERVICE should be a life-long habit, starting in high school.

I'm glad to see this. Voluntary assistance from the local community should be the primary source of support for people who need it, and the primary community-building force for those communities, not tax-funded government-run programs.

I worked at Girls, Inc for National Day of Service, which could turn into additional hours, throughout the year.
