Body of Petition:

Target: Governor Susana Martinez, Cathryn Brown and the Legislature of the State of New Mexico
Sponsored by: Kit Blumenstein

Because we support the human right to self determination of ones own life, we stand in strong opposition to this legislation proposal.
This is clearly a violation of the rights of women to make a presonal choice for thier own life.

This in no way could or would impede the progress of any investigation of a Rapist. Any and all biological data can be obtained whether or not a pregnancy is carried to full term. This proposed bill is a farce and forces women to be victimized twice, once by the criminal violent act of rape and second by the state of New Mexico.

The bill:

51st legislature - STATE OF NEW MEXICO - first session, 2013
Cathrynn N. Brown

SECTION 1. Section 30-22-5 NMSA 1978 (being Laws 1963, Chapter 303, Section 22-5, as amended) is amended to..

Thanks Sue, I can not send out green stars, but I thank everyone that will sign this petition and let our voices be heard in the state of New Mexico and every state that proposes legislation to interfere with the rights of women to act as their own best council in matters of their personal lives.

Sign and share - get the word out - we can stop this.

There are many possible tests on line one might be the same test required for those who wish to become citizens:

Another is just some basic civics and history questions;

If you do not understand the most basic elements of the history and meaning of this country, than do not run for office, you are irrelevant.

Being a woman, republican and vindictive are not mutually exclusive traits. Many have taken notice with some of the most repugnant actions by female judges ruling in favor of convicted rapists. These criminals do not deserve parental rights, they deserve, a trial, evidence presented, and then a trip to prison for a long, long time.

Jim P (3257)

Signed Kit's petition as # 7.

This bill as proposed by Cathrynn Brown is "blatantly unconstitutional."

"UPDATE: After the bill got national attention, Brown issued a statement saying that her bill had been misinterpreted, the Albuquerque Journal reports. "House Bill 206 was never intended to punish or criminalize rape victims," Brown said. "Its intent is solely to deter rape and cases of incest. The rapist—not the victim—would be charged with tampering of evidence."

A blatant LIE! by Cathrynn Brown.

Brown should withdraw her bill, HB 206, immediately.

Write to Cathrynn Brown:

Petition: as in the Visit Site link above.

Petition here: Take Action:

We won’t allow a small band of politicians and out-of-touch activists to interfere with a woman’s personal health care decisions. We won’t allow lawmakers to stand between women and their doctors.

Send a message to Rep. Brown and ask her to do the right thing and send this bad bill to the trash heap.

Take action for New Mexican women

Action Alert
Because Freedom Can't Protect Itself

Tell Rep. Cathrynn Brown that rape survivors need care and support, not a felony charge.

Dear friend of liberty,

I thought I had seen it all from anti-abortion extremists. I was wrong.

Late Wednesday, Rep. Cathrynn Brown (R-55) introduced a bill that could criminalize rape survivors who seek an abortion. Under her proposed amendment, the felony crime of "tampering with evidence" would be written to include "procuring or facilitating an abortion...of a fetus that is the result of criminal sexual penetration or incest with the intent to destroy evidence of the crime."

That's right; you can't make this stuff up. A bill that could force a rape survivor to choose between cooperating in the prosecution of her abuser and terminating an unwanted pregnancy that was forced upon her. Tell Rep. Brown that these kinds of extreme anti-abortion laws have no place in New Mexico.

After a strong initial public backlash to her bill, Rep. Brown is already wavering on this ill-advised scheme. She claims that she will edit out the most offensive parts of the bill, but this type of legislation doesn't belong in New Mexico in any form.

This bill is only part of a wider effort to intimidate women and make accessing safe, legal abortion practically impossible. This legislative session we have already seen a bill that would force a woman to view a medically unnecessary ultrasound and listen to a description of the fetus before she could terminate her pregnancy, and another that would force a young woman to notify their parents before she could access a safe and legal abortion.

Most New Mexicans agree that we should not punish survivors of sexual assault for the crime that was perpetrated upon them. Rape survivors need care and support, not a felony charge.

We can't let anti-abortion extremists and politicians interfere with private medical decisions that belong between a woman and her doctor, nor can we allow anyone to bully survivors of sexual assault. Send a message to Rep. Brown and ask her to do the right thing and send this bad bill to the trash heap.

Noted, thanks Kit and will sign. However, I want to point out that misspelling on the petitions is not a good way for them to be taken seriously, and may well just be tossed for that reason. I understand and am 100% behind this petition.

Please, for those who create petitions, check and re-check your spelling as well as all other critical points in the text. All your hard work must be taken very seriously by those who will consider it and will not, for 'petty' to you, reasons. I apologize if I hurt anyone's feelings. That is not my intent.

Kit B (276)
Friday January 25, 2013, 1:57 pm

I'm not sure that using capitalization within a sentence to emphasize a word is misspelling, if so I do apologize. I did run a spell check within the word processor and do hope that is the only misuse or misspelling within the petition.

People do not misunderstand the bill as Brown has said. The rapist isn't penalised. If a woman gets an abortion due to rape, she is the one, in the language of the bill, tampering with the evidence, not the rapist. Brown, there are many people a whole lot smarter than you that can see right through you!

Petition signed

This is absolutely outrageous! The woman is victimised by the rapist, and then by the state. Next we'll hear that the rapist has the right to charge the woman he raped with murder if she has an abortion. Or perhaps sue her in civil court.

Is this the 21st century in the US? Despicable!

The Republican/Teabaggers are so SNAFU'd, one begins to wonder if there is any hope at all for the average American.

Abortion is not available in 91 percent of New Mexico counties. The only doctor providing termination services in the northern half of the state retired recently, after 30 years of harrassment and abuse by pro-lifers. Many women are forced to go to Texas or Mexico for reproductive services because they simply aren't available in New Mexico. Rep. Brown is a former board member of Right to Life Carlsbad. Her agenda is crystal clear - to stop abortion once and for all in New Mexico. The anti-choice activists have the support of the Catholic Church (very powerful here) and Republican voters in the southern part of the state - not to mention our pro-life Republican governor. Only the "blue" state senate and house are protecting us right now. As a woman living in New Mexico, I see our reproductive rights eroding day by day, and am very afraid for the future of our state. Thanks for posting, Kit.

S & N, thanks my friend. I wonder where it happened that the government thought they could legislate our bodies, men and women? Our bodies are not government property, they belong to us, and only us. We make decisions for our bodies and what we eat, etc. I suppose the government will try to regulate what we eat too. Anyway, I believe that what they are doing is a violation of the constitution. Nothing in the Constitution gives the government the right to legislate our bodies. Yes, I read it.

Of course I signed this petition and also signed the one Jim Phillips included in his excellent comment. So many good comments here. I appreciate hearing from such strong supporters. I'm appalled at the answer Kit gave to Craig's question. OMG! How can a majority of states in these United States have made it OK for judges to give rapists parental rights to the babies they have forced upon a woman??? Our nation is going slowly mad, it seems! It is people like Kit and we who support sanity who must keep on keeping on. Thanks Kit. And also congrats on taking the criticism re spelling with such good humor. It is good to be careful, but I also think most people (officials or not) are tolerant of a typo or two, so no need to be paranoid about it.
