Video: A largely jubilant crowd reacted Wednesday morning after the Supreme Court struck down the Defense of Marriage Act.

The Supreme Court Wednesday struck down as unconstitutional the 1996 Defense of Marriage Act that denies federal benefits to same-sex couples who are legally married in the states where they reside.

The court said it violated equal protection to provide benefits to heterosexual couples while denying them to gay couples in the 12 states plus the District of Columbia where same-sex couples may marry. The law passed by bipartisan majorities in Congress and signed by President Bill Clinton recognized marriage as only between one man and one woman.

It passed at a time when same-sex marriage was not legal anywhere in the world.

Finally, the Fraud Five have allowed something that was completely unconstitutional to be struck down as such.

DOMA ends and slowly a new acceptance and freedom for gay couples will begin.

Mac and I are, of course, more than a little pleased with these rulings today.....,our life as a married couple in the state of Ca., as well as our world on a Fed. level, has become a whole lot brighter but more importantly ...*EQUAL*.. as Americans and not just as Californians. .

I am so glad this nonsense called Defense of marriage is gone, baby, gone. We can not get too comfortable about any of this, there is still more to come. SCOTUS removing the VAR protections should tell us we still have troubled waters ahead.

Congratulations to Jae, Mac and all of those so directly and intimately affected by this decision.

Boy, SCOTUS giveth and SCOTUS taketh away. With all their unconstitutional rulings it's amazing to see them not only get one right, but to do so for the right reason. I know gays were sweating this, but it was predicted a year ago when it was first presented because Kennedy has a record of voting this way on cases like this.

But WTF was he thinking on voting rights? At least he's the only one of the 5 a-holes on the court who gets it right on occasion.
