Health hazards have always been around human civilization. However, current lifestyle and dietary habits have increased the health risks for many. Fortunately, many other are awakening to the health benefits of green leafy vegetables.

We may shun and shrug over manes like spinach, broccoli or lettuce but the truth remains that there miraculous foods can salvage us from the damages we’ve been so mercilessly inflicting on our bodies. A balanced diet along with a stringent exercise regime not only can add years to your life, but also make your years vibrant and youthful.

Leafy green vegetables are a storehouse of health and help make our diet balanced and nutritious. A few qualities of these wondrous vegetables are:

Rich source of vitamins. Our body is a beautiful gift. But gifts should always be handled with care. Vitamins help improve our immune system, our eyesight, our bones and many more things. For people who are not able to adjust to the sober tastes of green vegetables are welcomed by some brilliant Indian recipes, including spinach and cottage cheese, sumptuously made with intoxicating spices to taste heavenly.

Weight loss. People suffering from obesity can greatly benefit from leafy vegetables. Green leafy vegetables are low in calories and fat, and thus help in weight loss. Fibre rich vegetables help in reducing the weight. Fibres being indigestible just fill the stomach, making us feel full. We eat less, and hence we lose weight. Also, fibre helps us improve the digestion, adding to the overall health of our body.

Strong bones. Magnesium and calcium, a significant component of most of the green vegetables, helps in building strong bones. Our bones help us move. They give us shape and support our body. Weak bones break easily. This makes us shorter, and also stoops our shoulders. Nobody wants to lose their height. So switching to green vegetables can help adding strength to the bones.

Bright eyes. The world is perceived with the help of our eyes. Faster than our feet, they have the ability to sketch and confirm identities. Losing them would obviously halt our day to day life. Lutein and Zeaxanthin present in the green leafy vegetables protect us from cataract and age related macular degeneration, major cause of blindness in the elderly.

Apart from these the green leafy vegetables also contain powerful anti-oxidants such as beta carotene, iron etc. High magnesium content and low glycemic index, makes them valuable for persons with type 2 diabetes. Green leafy vegetables are very important part of a healthy diet. In a week, one should always eat three cups of leafy green vegetables.

It is very clear that green vegetables provide us with a protective cover. We may neglect this shield, but it is very certain that without the help of this barrier, arrows of disease would pierce through our skin.

Interesting a close friend of mine has just been diagnosed with Leukemia and I was surprised the doctor has told her no salad not even organic I can understand the no fruit unless it can be peeled( banana orange etc) but was surprised at the no salad I love my greens cabbage is a wonder I like it fried with butter and garlic not sure about the health kick in that one ????

We can indulge on green leafy veggies and not worry about gaining an ounce...and they are loaded with vitamins and minerals. Enjoy those greens!

spam reported. Well lucky me ~ part rabbit here. Any thing with the title I love my leafy greens, I have to check out. In praise of leafy greens ~ so many wonderful leafy greens. Like bread to some, I see them as the salt of the earth. And screw that doctor Marie ~ that is an old conventional cancer bs perspective. The view is that any raw fruit or veg will burden their immune system ( lol ~ what do you think the drugs are doing) but in fact many progressive oncologists are now encouraging their patients to eat whole organic raw and cooked vegs and in mass quantities.

The cheap spam is here again, about as welcome as GMO.

I am omnivore but eat copious amounts of organic greens and grow my own. Love spinach (never in a can!) and even some green tomatoes at times along with many of the leafy green wonders plus adding some leafy red wonders as well.

Veggie are good for you but the push to stop pesticides, contaminated fertilizer and genetically modified food must be continued and won. As it is the mineral counts are not as high as decades ago and it will take years to move away genetically modified foods and big agriculture framing practices

Fairly new to this eating vegetarian. Have always loved my veggies, if not fresh then frozen. Love broccoli and brusselsprouts. Only recently found out that the iceberg lettuce I've love all my life is nutriciously nothing. So, here I am learning about all these supposedly wonderful leafy veggies and how to fix them...never too old to learn. Noted with thanks.

I'm lucky, was raised that salad was a part of every evening meal, and I still live with that. My mom being italian meant salads was always leafy green/red leaves, not ice berg.
