Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) on Sunday warned Senate Republicans that refusing to filibuster a bill that defunds President Barack Obama’s health care reform law “is a vote for Obamacare,” and he also advised House Republicans to “shut down the military” if they had to.

After a summer of insisting that Republicans should pass a budget that would defund Obamacare or shut down the government if the president refused to sign it, Cruz got exactly what he wanted last week. House Republicans rallied behind a continuing resolution that stripped funding from the Affordable Care Act, but Senate Democrats were expected to add funding back or refuse to pass the measure.

In a Sunday interview, Cruz told Fox News host Chris Wallace that Senate Republicans should stand together and refuse to vote for cloture by filibustering if Democrats added Obamacare funding to the bill.

“Any vote for cloture, any vote to allow Harry Reid to add funding to Obamacare with just a 51-vote threshold, a vote for cloture is a vote for Obamacare,” Cruz insisted. “And I think Senate Republicans are going to stand side-by-side with Speaker [John] Boehner and House Republicans, listening to the people and stopping this train wreck that is Obamacare.”

Wallace pressed Cruz on his “end game” if Senate Democrats did pass a budget with funding for the health care law and sent it back to the House.

“Because the government is going to shut down a week from Monday,” the Fox News host pointed out.

“If Harry Reid kills the bill in the Senate, the House should hold its ground, and should begin passing smaller continuing resolutions, one department at a time,” Cruz explained. “It should start with a continuing resolution focused on the military.”

“Send it over, see if Harry Reid is willing to shut down the military,” he quipped.

I had hoped this was another Andy Borowitz.... what is it? Too much oil in the water in Texas? Where do these morons come from? If it would shut them up and make them go away, I'd vote to shut everything down!

The cheese has fallen off his cracker one too many times!

I'd be perfecly happy if we didn't need the military, but we've made ourselves pretty unpopular in some parts of the world, so I'm thinking Cruz should be very careful what he asks for.

Censured, tarred & feathered & run out of town on a rail would be good~

Shutting down the military wouldn't bother me a bit...except for stranding our people in Afghanistan, Iraq, other hotspots they've been sent. Defund everything except getting our soldiers home.

The GOPTP are getting a bit frantic aren't hey - putting their favorite, the military, on the line. How many other things could they have gotten done instead of wasting all of this time. Wonder if they'll vote for a special session...

As good an idea as cutting your foot off to prepare for a race or rubbing sand in your eye to improve vision--and as antithetical to what your purpose and responsibility in accordance with your oath of office is supposed to be.

I'm on retirement Social Security I'm a little concerned if we will get our checks. We earned the money!

To take away my anxiety I got a credit card advance and paid October's rent. I'm being very careful with my money.

What really concerns me is what if they don't handle the debt ceiling. I'm not allowing my mind to dwell on that. I really don't think the congress will let that happen. Both the house and the senate it seems to me, would incense the American people. They'd lose all chance of getting re-elected or so it seems to me.

I can survive. I've been homeless before but I don't want that again. Still what concerns me is grandmothers who have grandchildren they have to take care of, being on the street with their little ones.

The checks are going to continue coming.
So be it. It is done. Amen

I give thanks.

Unfortunately, I don't think Harry has the balls to shut down the military. With the threat on filibustering, he'll likely take McTurtle's word not to filibuster and then get kicked again with a filibuster.

Cruz and his ilk are truly unpatriotic! They don't give a rat's ass for the people. Very dangerous idiot! . . . and no, Canada will NOT take him back!

Sure, I'll bite. Bring our troops home, stop making more bombs and going off to war. I'm sure someone that makes a lot of money off of the War Machine will be breathing down Cruz's neck. As they say, give them enough rope.

Well Zee I'm afraid I'd be the Grandmother with the grandchild you speak of. All I can say is thankful I live in Florida were we won't freeze to death should it come to that.

Jerks in Washington, I guess if they throw us all out into the streets we'll all be ready to march there and be the Grey Panthers. I don't know, maybe to knock some sense into these jerks is they have to see the streets full of the Elders, Children, and Disabled standing outside their gated communities.

Good grief! I don't know who's worse -- this guy or the NRA's Wayne. This politician is dangerous to our Constitution, to our democracy -- to our country! It's scary to think what would happen if he and others like him were to get more power than they have right now. I think I'd rather kill myself than live in a country with them in charge!

Well dayum, I Linda Blair'd so fast my head fell off this time....hey...that is NOT a soccer ball, spank you very much!

These insane Fascist Bast**ds have gone to the far far away state now.....can we just leave them over there this time......and not send them any food, water, clothing, kickbacks, laundered money or military that possible? HUH?? Dawg, I reallllllllllly loathe Ol' Crackhead Cruz.

Cruz has we say, let his mouth over load his brain. Yes, those of us that favor staying out of war, could causally agree with the proposal, but not the idea of any part of our government being held hostage at the whim of a brand new Senator trying to gather some Curriculum Vitae for his very empty folder of governing experience. The man is a fool. He is hoping to gain recognition so he might be considered for a presidential run.

If the result of all of this is a shut down of the government, no paychecks will be issued.

I always thought the vernacular was 'mouth overloading his a$$'.....he has no brain, Kitters, we both know that. He's a Fascist FOOL and TOOL. However, you are correct, and I very much agree with you, that all of his 'Insani-TEA' is aimed for one end....the presidency. Dawg help us all if that ever happened.

Then again.....if he were to get them to 'shut down the military'....imagine just how many enemies he would make with that little stunt.......think about it. That is why it will not happen. He would throw the infants, the young, the infirm and the elderly under the bus, but not the military. They cannot take the chance of the military branches coming over to the peoples' side enmasse.

Ted Cruz ought to be taken on a cruise, to some uninhabited atoll in the Pacific Gyre, chained to it, and required to pick up the plastic debris that collects, or have his liver pecked out on a daily basis.
The Texans that vote for this kind of imbecile ought to be transformed into that very same flotsam.

Thank you for a good article about an important subject, I loved reading all of the comments from you care 2 members on this subject. I know it will affect everyone of us in one way or another, but the repulsive republican tea bag party does not really care, all they answer to is the puppet master GROVER NORquist, who holds those signed pledges from every republican office holder in the United States, local, state and federal. He has them in his safe, and if anyone goes against the tea party they will never be re-elected to office, next they answer to the money men,,,KOCH bros.If anyone goes against them they will make sure they do not get contributions to their campaigns. next they answer to NRA wayne lapdog.... he has everyone scared to make laws to protect american citizens from being murdered with guns. I think they all are drinking the poison KOOL AID OF THE TEA PARTY..,.God help us all , they are making no sense when they open their mouth to talk...Keep the information coming we need all the facts before we can make a good decision.....When 2014 and 2016 comes we need to speak up at the voting booth, and send those people home that do not want to work, and get people that are willing to cooperate and work across the house and senate. floors with democrats and republicans,....period.
