Video at VISIT SITE from NBC News.

The United States Capitol was placed on lockdown Thursday afternoon after a woman tried to ram a car into the White House gate, was chased by Secret Service and exchanged shots with police, sources said.

Rep. Tulsi Gabbard, D-Hawaii, describes the scene near her Cannon House office. Gunshots were reported on Capitol Hill on Thursday, October 3.

The suspect — who had a child in the car — was shot and killed, and a shelter-in-place order was lifted at about 3 p.m. At least one Capitol Police officer was injured but apparently not shot.

****Police have NOT verified that anyone was killed!

President Barack Obama was briefed about the harrowing incident, which came in the midst of the government shutdown that has created a tense atmosphere on Capitol Hill.

It started a little after 2 p.m. when the woman in a black car tried to breach White House security at 15th St. and E, law-enforcement sources said.

She did not get through and was chased at high speeds for about 12 blocks, the sources said. Near the Capitol, she began firing and was shot, the sources said. The child was reported to be safe.

Her motive was unknown but Capitol Police said there was no reason to think it was an act of terrorism.

Travis Gillbert, who watched the chase from the roof of the Newseum, said vehicles involved "had several close encounters with other vehicles during the case."

"It was very dangerous," he said.

An NBC satellite truck operator saw several police cars with lights flashing near the gardens below the Capitol when he suddenly heard rapid-fire shots. Several police cars could then be seen chasing the black car, he reported.

The FBI responded to the scene, and a helicopter landed in front of the Capitol to medevac the injured officer.

A message from the Capitol Police ordered anyone in a House office to "shelter in place," but that order was lifted a short time later.

The House recessed, and the Senate went into a quorum call — dispensing momentarily with its official business — shortly thereafter.

We’ve locked the doors. We closed the window shades. And we are awaiting further instructions,” Rep. Jared Polis (D-Colo.) told MSNBC during the lockdown. “We’re more or less cut off here. We’re watching TV and just trying to figure out what happened.”

Though it was over quickly, nerves were still jangled.

"Shaken is a good word to describe how I'm feeling," said Peter Plocki, a government worker furloughed during the shutdown who was on Capitol Hill to take a tour of the Supreme Court building and heard the shots.

By Michael O'Brien, Pete Williams and Richard Esposito, NBC News| Luke Russert, Brian Williams and Pete Williams also reporting.

*******Police ran to attend to an officer in a wrecked police car on the corner of Constitution Avenue and First Street after shots were fired on Capitol Hill. A volley of shots rang out outside the US Capitol building, sending lawmakers and tourists scattering for cover and triggering a massive security operation. Police sealed off the building as emergency vehicles converged at the scene. About half an hour after the incident began, the security lockdown at the Capitol was eased and the doors reopened.

*****This is an ongoing story - updates will be given as the police release more information.....

Some reports indicate the injured officer may have been injured from ramming the shooters car.

Unverified reports say the woman had an infant in the car with her.

Some reports indicate she was firing at the police and was shot and injured.

News is now saying the female suspect is severely injured or dead. The baby is fine and being taken to hospital to be checked.

Thanks Carrie, I just heard that from the news. Though as typical with things like this, we have to wait for the dust the settle till we know what this is all about. I'm so glad the child/baby is doing well.

Wonder if she was just desperately trying to get attention for the programs cutting women and children help...would be awfully desperate if so. But then, maybe she just wanted to give her child to one of those idiots voting for the sutdown, so they could pay for food and diapers, etc...Too bad she had to get herself badly hurt/killed to do whatever it was. Another NRA poster person.

Wow, how awful. The NRA should have some slimy thing to say about this. I hope congress realizes there needs to be some controls put on guns. For one thing, they should be banned from the DC area completely, except for officers who work there. I haven't heard what you heard yet, Carrie. Thanks for the info. I have CNN on and changing to MSNBC now. I hope the officer is okay, I heard he was injured in the car ramming her to keep her from escaping, and had to be cut out of the car.

I posted this on another thread, one on the Congressional shut-down; but, I think it is apropos HERE, so I will re-post it here, unless Kit objects:

There are certain very influential, moneyed people who WANT Chaos.
And they're getting it.
They WANT no govt {i.e., ANARCHY. And not in the "radical leftist" sense}.
They WANT every Crazy to be running around freely with loaded assault weapons, everywhere, creating FEAR, everywhere.
They WANT to set poor people against one another - jobless vs. those in low-paying jobs, homeless vs. people in ghettoes and trailers, black vs. white, young vs. elderly, urban vs. rural, men vs. women, gay vs. straight, undocumented immigrants vs. citizen immigrants. Family members not trusting each other. Money so tight, and Social Services so non-existent, that people HAVE to turn to Criminal Activity if they want to survive. People tense and fighting over scraps. Mental breakdowns, untreated illnesses, suicides. EVERYone engaged in some sort of chicanery to survive, nobody trusting ANYbody. Breaking up neighborhoods. And LOTS of people armed, and LOTS of such armed people stark, staring, raving mad. CHAOS. Like a post-apocalyptic movie. Living standards back to the serfs in the Middle Ages - but no Church morality and authority to keep the serfs obedient.
Under such circumstances, DEMOCRACY WILL BE IMPOSSIBLE.
And that's what these people want.
A Fascist-type coup would come as a relief - Law'n'Order, of a SORT, would be imposed. Like in Latin American dictatorships. Opponents conveniently "disappeared".
Then the Corporations would have a completely FREE HAND to rape the land of ALL resources, with NO DEMOCRATIC WILL-OF-THE-PEOPLE OPPOSITION.
That is why they are DE-FUNDING EVERYTHING.
They KNOW what they are doing. Maybe their puppets in Congress know, maybe not.

Nope, not "paranoia", not "it's the Freemasons, the Illuminati, the English royal family, Aliens, etc. etc. etc."
Just the Corporations, working together in all of their mutual interests.
You see the plan UNFOLDING before your eyes.
No, not a series of "accidents", "co-incidences" and "sheer stupidities".
They just want you to THINK that. "Stupid" is one of the best cover-ups there is!
But you can TELL how all these things WORK TOGETHER..... mutually re-enforcing each others' effects.

I wonder if this doesn't have even more to do with the Republican shutdown than with guns. Don't you feel like driving a car into the Capitol Building yourself? Aren't you that angry at the Tea Partiers in the House? I am! Of course we won't, because we are adults mentally as well as physically, and wouldn't even if we were close enough to do so. But Republican policies have already been driving people to suicide before this happened. What did they expect, for heaven's sake? That desperate people would just sit quietly like little sheep?

A "protest" against the Congressional shut-down?
Unable to support her child?
A CHILD in the car with the woman! Geez!
"Suicide-by-cop"? With a CHILD???
Stark raving mental illness? but there must be more...

Making FEAR a thing that everyone lives with, every day, everywhere.
Not just "in the ghetto, in the slums, in the 'dangerous' part of town".

This is a PLAN TO ERADICATE DEMOCRACY. Fear combined with extreme poverty and financial instability did a REAL GOOD JOB of this in Hitler's Germany...
A PLAN BY THE BIG CORPORATIONS. So they can RAPE THE ENVIRONMENT {till nothing's left!} without any messy interference by the likes of us, the "will-of-the-people" be damned!!!

One thing is clear from the video just released, she was driving very fast, so I guess very determined. She is dead, and we might never know what pushed her to this. Yes, Joanne people are terribly desperate, and all of us feel completely ignored by the government.

Knowing that area, I would not have believed any one could pick up that much speed in that areas. The video shows the car stopped at one point, surrounded by armed police and she still pulled back into traffic picking up speed. I pleased that the video shown does not include the final shot out.

TU Kit, was watching it on the news for over 1/2 hour. Woman with infant? WT???????? The news video link (one of them)

Sorry Kit can never get those live. These gun shootings are taking place all over. Sometimes I actually feel it takes place so that person can obtain more notability and exposure due to internet, News, twitter, etc. Sad that an incident at the White House( that no one can get up to since the Oklahoma bombing) gets more time than some other news that is taking place. SIGH

I can certainly hear the NRA making hay with this action . . . and the Republicanus/Teabaggers too. It will likely be sold as an act of desperation at the shutdown, but I agree that we`ll likely never know. With a debt limit crisis looming and the severe global implications, the next while will be more dicey than usual.

The police that are there are doing so on their own time, they are NOT being paid. They have just taught a lesson on real patriotism and love of country to those dummies in Congress. This not being called a terror attack, why not? I'm sure everyone involved was terrorized.

Who will deny this country is a stressful place to live in these days. There is this teaparty battle in congress unless the government stops helping people get health care .......cutting food stamps that feeds children...... the constant threat towards Soc security.........The relationship between unemployment and suicide is well established. .....i.e the persistence of long-term unemployment an added factor in the rising suicide rate these days, especially for older workers 50+
PBS NewsHour story, originally broadcast on May 3.
This is nearly a third world country and it seems some only focus on the military that can scare people. as if that makes us great.

Kit B (276)
Thursday October 3, 2013, 2:08 pm

She rammed her car at the barricades in front of the Capitol and then sped down Constitution Avenue toward the Supreme Court Building, apparently she fired at the police, leaving them no choice, but to return fire. The child has been taken to a hospital to be checked out, no reports of injury to the child/baby - age is unknown.

Again keep in mind these Police Officers are not being paid today.

Kit B (276)
Thursday October 3, 2013, 2:16 pm

To hell with what the NRA says. The Good Guys with guns were again the Police. Police not paid for working this week, putting their lives on the line.

It's is still very hard to get a job, and when you do it pays very little but rent, utilities, transportation, some form of child care and of course food must be covered by a pay check that just can not stretch that far. Is it any wonder that people are losing it?

Lindsey O (19)
Thursday October 3, 2013, 2:22 pm
Sounds like the woman has mental problems (especially doing what she did with a child in the car). I'm sure we'll learn more as time goes on.

Barbara, we can't arbitrarily take away people's Constitutional rights just because they live in the city of Washington D.C. Although we can make and enforce sensible gun laws we can't ban them wholesale for an entire city.

David C (129)

Kit B (276)
Thursday October 3, 2013, 2:35 pm

The gun laws in DC are some of the toughest in the country, and all one need to do is drive across the bridge to Virginia, and walk into a gun show. Access to guns is not the answer, it is one part of the answers. Honestly, things like this happen all the time, in the U S and many countries, we just don't learn about on the very limited news we have here. An Internet search will show that many people all over the world are suicidal.

Saw this on the news, sad that a child had to witness this and that the woman died without even telling us what this was all about.

She obviously had problems as most people whatever their anger don't bring a child along for a protest. Hopefully she kept a journal and wrote about her plans so police can see what her motives were, or if she ever talked to friends and that sort of thing. Neighbours might have insight or relatives but we may never know because she is dead and her motives may well have died with her.

For all we know she could be peeved at Obama, or even the Tea Party, protesting cutbacks...or perhaps a partner working there, one really has no clue except now that she is dead and a child will not know his/her mother while growing up.

Mental illness can be treated but some fall through the cracks especially the types of mental illnesses requiring constant medication when people stop taking these. We don't know if she was married or lived with someone.

Sad, whatever the cause. It doesn't appear that she was armed.

DaleLovesOttawa O (198)
Thursday October 3, 2013, 3:11 pm
Barbara K, I don't believe that guns had anything to do with this incident, she was using her car as a weapon.

I am not sure if the police could have taken her into custody without shooting her, blocking her car with their vehicles or something as most police cars have anti-ramming things on the front of the car to prevent people from ramming their front end (or rather it helps prevent the front end of the car from being smashed). Maybe they did not know if she was armed but it sounds like she did not have a gun.

If she was mentally ill and that was the reason, it's too bad that she could not have been arrested and then treated but I guess police were doing all they could to prevent anyone else from being injured if they could not get her out of the car. Still, one always wishes for a more peaceful end.

Some very interesting comments in here and many theories as well.

Here is one: Maybe the woman, who was "mortally wounded" was simply just lost
in the area and became frustrated. Maybe the child in the car was bawling and the
Mother just simply lost it all with all of her frustrations...

Since the woman was "mortally wounded", we may never know what really happened, only the results of the aftermath of this episode.

Ty, Kit.

It sounds more like a break than some political statement

If the child was hers and she was 39 with MI I could not rule out post partum issues

Before we left for dinner, Jan had changed over to CNN and Wolf Blitzer was talking about a connection to the terrorists in Kenyan. Leave it to the media to make lemons from sugar. Once she tried to break through at the White House she was dead, that is just standing orders, I think before that point the when the police saw the child in the car they were hesitant to fire. I think over the next few days we might begin to learn what happened.

No Jim, she was not lost, she was definitely trying to ram through the barricades at the capitol building and at that point her car was surrounded by police. She then swerved away from them and began driving at a high speed. To do that in DC the roads had to be closed from all other traffic.

Yes, Pam it is very unusual for a woman to do something like this. It sure looks like suicide by cop.

Sheryl G (360)

This is a sad story, a child no longer has a Mother. A young woman is dead, no one is sure what happened a breakdown perhaps. She had no weapon, but her car was being used as one; she slightly injured someone, and with her racing through red lights she could of killed others. The only guns fired were by police and it was fatal for her. I'm glad it wasn't worse, a dead child or others that might of died. Very sad, I'm sure in time the reason may be more clear.

It's still hard to know her motives, she was working as a dental hygienist, so obviously despite her (what the media reports as) her history of mental illness, she was able to hold down a job.

One wonders how she behaved during the week at work, if anything in her behaviour was a bit off or acting just a bit different than usual?

Whatever the reasons behind her actions, it is very sad for all involved.

Bill C mentions post partum issues as a possibility, which is entirely possible but then the media says a 'history of mental illness' so this could even be Bipolar or Schizophrenia, but one is just speculating. I imagine police will check her medicine cabinet/pharmacist to see if she was on any prescribed medication.

Obviously she must have been able to both work and care for her child or the child would have been taken away from her (am not sure if she is single or married or common law). If she has a partner, then certainly more will be known about how she was acting up until this tragic event than if she was single.

If she had no friends and kept to herself, then it may be impossible to know what set off the series of events.

It sounds like things happened very quickly. I don't know if police could have shot out her tires or if they were even close enough to her car to smash the window in and grab the keys but I guess they did not want her to use the car as a weapon and injure others.

When I read here that the woman wasn't armed, I almost started to cry. Still have tears just under the surface.

With so MANY people being armed these days, and so MANY crazies carrying guns ALL the time, and so MANY attacks with guns -
the police THEMSELVES are going to be antsy, because they NEVER KNOW who's going to be armed and who isn't. So they take the "safe" route, for themselves and for the Public, and shoot first and ask questions later.
The police, these days, can reasonably EXPECT people acting oddly, and threateningly, to be armed.
And they have to react INSTANTANEOUSLY, instinctively, like a reflex.
Probably people acting that threatening, these days will be armed more often than not.

The NRA and their CORPORATE BACKERS, the Gun and Ammunition Manufacturers, THRIVE on the CHAOS and the PARANOIA they are PRODUCING ON PURPOSE. Very EVIL Purposes - but not "random", not "a co-incidence" but WITH PURPOSE - "Purpose" spelled P-R-O-F-I-T-$$$$$.
And the entire CAPITALI$T SYSTEM is, like, UNITED in support of that...

We will never know the truth....but I am sure the media and the Fascists will spin this to their purposes, which are never in the interest of the people. I feel sorrow for the child and the woman (for now unless proven differently, I think she snapped). Death By Cop is plausible when one has no other weapon to end oneself, except by auto, which may or may not take out other innocent people around one, which most suicides do not want to do.

More and more, people are becoming despondent and without hope for their futures and thus, feeling there is no purpose to continue, death by cop is going to become more commonplace I fear. That and other creative ways to off oneself. Despair can be a killer of one's soul. If America doesn't get its act together soon, there will be much more of this. Just too sad.

This article from the CBC Capitol Hill Incident 03/10/13

Apparently, the woman was 34 years old and suffering from postpartum depression. Previously she had been hospitalised for her depression. She was not armed, her weapon being her vehicle.

Like many, I wonder if more could have been done to stop the women without resorting to deadly force. However, I was not there. As every report I have seen, the situation escalated quickly and there was a lot of commotion. Police would not know until the woman was stopped that there was no weapon other than the vehicle.

Obviously, she was a tortured soul at the time. May she rest in the peace that she did not know at the time of her death. And may her little daughter be safe.

I think if we had a decent mental health system maybe things would have been very different. There is so much we do not know and maybe can not know. Perhaps we should focus our thoughts and hopes for the welfare and good life for the child.

Lindsey O (19)

BMutiny, since this woman had already run down one officer, hit a Secret Service vehicle, hit a police vehicle, rammed barricades, tried to crash through the barrier at the White House, sped through the streets at a high rate of speed, etc. - police didn't need to assume she might have a gun in order to consider her a very significant threat.

From what I read, the postpartum depression issue came from her mother who said she'd been acting different since the birth of her child. So we don't really know what her psychiatric condition was or wasn't - pretty obviously she had some significant mental problems. I feel sorry for her, her child and family, and for the police and secret service agents who were forced to kill her. "Suicide by cop", if that's what it was, harms the officers who have to fire the shots as well as the person who started it all - it's traumatic for everyone.

Very sad, now it sounds like Postpartum depression and I still wonder if the officers had to use lethal force.
Years ago I remember reading about a doctor who had suffered from Postpartum depression and she jumped onto the subway train tracks and both she and her baby died. It can claim many victims which is why funding on mental health issues should be a priority as it often gets fewer funds than other medical research.

This woman was likely mentally disturbed. She thought the Govt and President were somehow after her. A condition possibly made worse by all the conspiracy theories and anti-government nonsense that seems prevalent these days.

Having watched the video, I do think the police could have handled this better. There seems to have been a general panic among them. Very unprofessional IMO.
