Please read the article about animal testing.
contact the following individuals at the National Institutes of Health. Ask that the agency end the decades-long policy of funding nicotine experiments on animals and instead redirect funds towards prevention, education and smoking cessation programs

Tell NIH To Stop Testing Nicotine On Animals:
http://ga0.org/campaign/NIH_Nicotine

Decades of clinical studies in humans have unequivocally documented the harmful effects of nicotine on adults and children. So much, in fact, is known about the ill effects of smoking from studying these human victims, that Big Tobacco's best attorneys couldn't talk their way out of the landmark $209 billion Master Settlement Agreement (MSA) of 1998 between 46 states and the U.S. tobacco industry.

Which leaves Americans wondering why the U.S. federal government, through the National Institutes of Health (NIH), continues to grant millions of dollars each year to scientists to force animals to consume nicotine.

Animal experiments failed to demonstrate that exposure to cigarettes and tobacco smoke caused lung and other forms of cancer, which is now undisputed in humans.
Since 2002 alone, the NIH has spent at least $16.5 million to conduct nicotine experiments on pregnant and newborn animals. This appalling figure does not reflect the total cost of all nicotine research on animals, which numbers far higher, but only that which focuses on nicotine’s effect on fetal and newborn development.
At Oregon Health and Science University, Elliot Spindel conducts experiments on pregnant monkeys who have nicotine pumps surgically implanted in their bodies. Steady doses of nicotine are delivered to these mothers, and their babies are cut out of their wombs at various stages of development in order to dissect their lungs.

Contact IDA if you live near, or are an alumni of, any of the universities currently conducting nicotine research on animals, and would like to protest these experiments. Visit our website or contact Barbara Stagno (Barbara@idausa.org) if you need more information.

At the University of California, Davis, Kent Pinkerton subjects pregnant monkeys to cigarette smoke for six hours each day, five days a week. After birth, when the infants are ten weeks old, they are killed by lethal injection and their lungs are dissected for analysis.

Frances M. Leslie, at the University of California, Irvine, subjects pregnant rats to intravenous injections of nicotine equivalent to two cigarettes, every 14 minutes, 16 hours a day, amounting to 137 cigarettes a day. That’s more than 6 packs a day.

And at Yale University, researcher Marina Picciotto has given painful shocks to the feet of mice, which is followed by a nicotine injection in the abdomen. This is followed by more shocks, increasing in intensity, which only end when the mice run and cry out in pain.
The American public is largely unaware of these experiments and the millions of taxpayer dollars poured into them. But they do know about the harmful effects of smoking, and that giving nicotine to animals will not help people quit smoking.

IDA is committed to bringing these experiments to light so that our legislators and policy makers can no longer avoid confronting this hideous waste of precious research dollars. Decades of nicotine research has tortured and killed countless animals, yielding little to nothing that is of benefit to humans. Meanwhile, public health tobacco prevention programs endure cut backs and go under funded.

Imagine how many more adults and children could be helped nationwide if the millions of dollars that go to fund cruel nicotine experiments on animals would instead be used to provide education and support for people who smoke. This is where the NIH needs to direct its resources; not into sustaining cruel and outdated experiments on animals.

Nobody needs this smoking experiments! Here in Holland we have still 27% smokers people who know that smoking is good for their health...why would we want to know how bad smoking is.....

I totally agree. It seems that there are more crazy, insane people ruling the world, then people with common sense.

I don't even want to discuss this - I'm not interested in why/what for any animal experiment is conducted. There is no question if it is useful or not. There is question if somebody is hurt, abused, killed!!!

However I agree that these particular tests are so stupid that it's obvious they are conducted by people with very low IQ for people with this same state of mind.
First of all we all have known, from years, the effects of smoking. Besides, there are many things which can kill you and we don't need any proves of that. Smiking can kill, drinking (not only alcohol) can kill, drugs (I don't mean narcotics) can kill, doctors can kill, driving can kill, LIFE can kill - so what???

EU commision which was supposed to adopt in the midle of septebtember a new animal experiments directive, sudenly removed the item from the official agenda. Anyway the new proposal states that in some areas of science animal experiments has to be done - that means it will be possible to conduct experiments also on primates:
Stavros Dimas:
"The concerns surrounding the use of non-human primates, and great apes in particular, have been thoroughly considered and need to be addressed adequately in the proposal, consolidating the situation prevailing today in the EU."
"Let me add however that given the current state of scientific knowledge, the use of a limited number of other species of non-human primates is still unavoidable for a number of vital research programmes. This is especially true of research on severe global diseases. It would therefore be premature to set a timetable with fixed deadlines to phase out all use of non-human primates. I am convinced that better results can be achieved with the long-term commitment and engagement of all involved. We have to work together on an agreed strategy to develop alternatives, and I therefore call on you to play an active role in identifying the actions needed to turn this vision into a reality."

"is still unavoidable for a number of vital research programmes" - the question is - what is vital research programme appart from "global diseases"

Sick!!!!!!!!

They don't need to do nicotine testing on animals anymore. What more could you find out that is already known about it. A waste of money and animal life. They don't smoke, so why should they suffer. Everyone already knows the hazards with it. They need to test it on themselves. Action taken and noted with thanks Joanna.

I don't smoke but I'd gladly enjoy the drugs rather than have them wasted on torturing animals.

This makes no sense that they continue to test nicotine products on animals when everyone knows how dangerous cigarettes and other tobacco products are to humans. It really is a shame.

Noted.
I am so happy I gave up smoking a few years ago. I was not aware of this shame, and I believe if more people were, the number of smokers would sensibly diminish.
I am running a petition against this kind of experiments here:

There was a smoking gorilla at the Melbourne[?] zoo---he started from watching his handlers, and they thought it would be funny to watch him try it. It was SO funny, and he got so much praise for it, he developed a serious nicotine habit---and became irascible without his cigs. I really don't know why you would need to do any further testing than that... Gadzooks!

Nicotine kills, cigarettes, cigars kill.are they creating pesticides from nicotine or what? I looked up nicotine, it says poisen. Why do they feel the need to confirm what they know, testing on animals.

I smell greed.Government funding stops if research projects are discontinued.

If you don't smoke please know how horrible the addiction process is it is for life it is a struggle for some.

I watched people I love die to cancer, an uncle had lung cancer removed the lung and he died shortly afterward from heartattack. My grandfather died at home in my grandmothers arms, it is just awful painful horrible to witness a person soffocate. My dad had COPD and enphyzema,he died with so many illnesses but those he struggled with for years,

I wish for no one to be affected by nicotine/cigarette related issues.

I've sent an email. Why don't governments simply abolish / shut down cigarette manufacturers? Is it because they will lose too many taxes from this action? They hypocrisy here is absolutely stunning! May these experimenters rot in hell.

I'm horrified to say that i live near a place that makes 4000 monkeys smoke, run by a certain Dr. spindel, in oregon. I have protested outside of this cruelty factory to no avail. I will have to ask these people to please reconsider THIER actions before it is too late. Animal as well as human freedom is near, Thx Joanna. Unfortunately, I and we are all responsible for LETTING this continue.

Serge - that's it - no THEY no Goverments but WE are responsible for EVERYTHING - until we sit silent it continues
The worst people are those who are aware what's going on and do nothing - not those who have no idea about that
Please everybody forward all messages to your friends outside Care2 and educate your families - I know it could be very diffcult sometimes, but you can't imagine how many people (because of their ignorance!!) think that animal testing is blood taking, is neccessary for medical science and there are no alternatives - this all is bullshit

News: Animal Experiments at Dartmouth College
http://www.care2.com/news/member/457397809/923926

In 2007, the most recent year for which USDA reports are available, Dartmouth used more than 900 animals in research, including 265 hamsters, 243 pigs and 277 voles. The report also listed 16 primates at the college...

How many places like this are around us?? The article is about THE FIRST protest at the college!!!
"it was the first time that there had been an animal welfare demonstration on campus"
