Petition (posted here by Cristina a few days ago) to Help Save the Innocent Animals That Are Being Tortured and Murdered in Research Labs:
http://support.pcrm.org/site/PageServer?pagename=candidate_pres_elect_petition08&autologin=true&JServSessionIdr001=mu3mjx9k81.app8b

Full petition text:

To:

The president-elect of the United States
Subject: FDA Animal Testing Policy

As the newly elected president, it is my hope that you will use your presidential power to appoint a new FDA Commissioner who will require the use of more humane, scientifically-proven, nonanimal testing methods when possible. As a PCRM supporter, I strongly support animal welfare reform in this country. Every day, because of the current FDA animal testing policy, thousands of animals suffer and are killed to test drugs that will never help a sick human being. Please do everything in your power to change this policy!

Project R&R:
http://www.releasechimps.org/mission/end-chimpanzee-research/

"Some 1,200 chimpanzees are confined in U.S. laboratories. Some were wild-caught as babies in Africa, others were born in a lab or sent from zoos, circuses, and animal trainers. Some were taught to communicate using sign language or raised in family settings only to be sent into biomedical experimentation when funding ran out, or they became too strong to manage.

For all of them, life in a lab means confinement, fear, suffering, and endless boredom."

"It is generally difficult to obtain information from most of the labs holding chimpanzees in the United States. Some facilities receiving federal funding also conduct research for private companies. On these grounds, they claim that they are privately operated and therefore are not subject to federal disclosure laws.

The facilities are also often slow to produce requested information. For example, in early summer 2004, Project R&R requested U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) animal welfare inspection reports from all of the facilities housing chimpanzees (with the exception of the Language Research Center and the Comparative Cognition Project). The requests were all refiled at the end of July 2005. We received the requested documents in November 2005.

In addition, private facilities (as well as other federal labs such as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) may contract with outside research facilities that also receive public funding (such as the Southwest National Primate Research Center) to conduct chimpanzee research. Information on privately funded research within a laboratory that also receives federal research funding is not publicly accessible."

Noted with such sadness for the animals. Thank you Joanna for the article. No matter where we live we have a responsibility to show respect and compassion for all species we share our planet with.
This is so sad and shameful. The people responsible for this abuse and despicable cruelty to the defenseless animals have lost their humanity.

Alice petition STOP NIH NICOTINE EXPERIMENTS ON ANIMALS has only 409 signatures (the goal is 3000)!!!
http://www.thepetitionsite.com/1/stop-cruel-nicotine-experiments-on-monkeys-at-ohsu

If you want to make difference forward the petitions to your friends, actually it is not enough to sign. Make people aware! Care2 members are wonderful but we are only a small group - to change anything we need more people opposing animal experiments.

Joanna D. (216)
Tuesday October 28, 2008, 3:28 pm
yes, Bronwyn, it's list of USA labs - think how many of them is around the world!!!
I want to show you all that we are not aware of the labs amounts. I want to encourage people from other countries to check animal research labolatories in their area.
As for now I have only US full list.

How utterly disgusting. Is there no way you can do something about this? Animal experiments are useless, so why are they still doing them? Those poor animals are suffering for nothing. How can someone call themself a human being and at the same time inflict such agony on an animal.

Roseann d. (178)
Tuesday October 28, 2008, 3:43 pm
Don't they have enough human smokers to see the results of Nicotine? Why subject an animal - Animals should not have to pay with their health and lives for stupid human vices.

I am actually heartsick at seeing all the labs in print, two are within 45 minutes of my home. that VA hospital in Coatesville, PA turned my husband down for benefits when he was unemployed, all he wanted was medical coverage for the few months he was out of work! but they can torture animals to death. yes, Marena, there is always something we can do, and they will shoot us down again and again because there is so much for them to gain monetarily, most of those monsters heading the research, aka torture, don't give a damn how badly those animals suffer.
all those names in print, all those tortured and dead babies.
I hope you great success in the group, Joanna, ty for leading the way.

"When I see those who do it .... I wonder how they can look in a mirror. How they can live. How can they love their children, their families, their friends. How do these monsters can come and go among us ..."

By telling themselves, "The animals don't feel pain."
By telling themselves, "The animals don't know any better."
By telling themselves, "These are just animals, it doesn't matter."
By telling themselves, "I am doing some great servive for humanity."

In reality, like Sheila pointed out, they want to pump up their egos by seeing their names in print; their miserable grant will be extended if they make up some "findings" and so they do because they want the paycheck; they lie about the scientific usefulness of what they do because they refuse to be questioned by other scientists who refute the efficacy of the torture they conduct; because they are pychopaths who think nothing of torture because the living beings they torture have no value in their eyes except for the glory their suffering will bring.

That anyone would dare label ALF liberators as "terrorists" because they set free tortured prisoners means that slavery is alive and well, and so long as there are slaves of ANY kind in the world, there will be no peace, and certainly no evolution of homo sapiens!

YES friends...WE KNOW...WE CARE...WE PETITION...WE CONDONE...

BUT....

so many in the world do NOT know, what we know....have NOT seen, what we have seen....We MUST spread the word...and keep spreading the word, join animal activist websites...refer others to these sites too...where they can read about this barbaric vivisection/experimentation industry...

Tell people to buy *cruelty free* products...and *not-tested on animals*...

Print out information for others to read...encourage them to watch the videos we have seen here and on other sites...let's KEEP spreading the word. I personally have turned others into 'cruelty-free people'...you can too!!

Thank you Joanna

Ok kids, you know that when you go to the drugstore to pick up something for your nose, lungs, tummy, skin, hair, nails etc. everything has been tested on animals of one species or another. Even dye for your clothes, cleaning products, so much on the shelves waiting for your "need"! Also for every product being tested on these poor animals there is a competing company testing theirs. How many competing companies are there? Go to the store and LOOK! Ever different bottle on the shelf, giving you a great amount to pick from, how their commercials are effecting your buying habits. Put this way, everything you use as an ease for your life means agony for an animal. Are you ready to go back in time where there were none of these products? They will not stop unless YOU stop buying.

You are right Black T about the buying must stop in order for the testing to end.

A couple of weeks ago I went to the CARREFORE hypermarket. Insootted 6 young women choosing PANTENE shampoo and conditioner. I gave them a lecture on P&G animal testing in rather graphic detail and pointed them to ST Ives products which are not tested on animals. They were shocked at what I told them and all thanked me and bought ST Ives instead. I know, it was only 6 people but I hope they will spread the message to others.

Black T. I even didn't think I should write about that here....
But of course you are right!!!
Another thing is with so called "research" experiments which aren't used for drugs testing, cosmetics, detergents etc. There are many usefull experiments like those at Oxford University or at OHSU

I couldn't find a list of WHERE in Australia, but on the excellent Animals Australia site they had the most recently updated figures (2004-5!)of how many and which animals were victims.

http://www.aahr.asn.au/statistics.html

At that time the number was close to 7 million, including over 204,000 of our beautiful native animals!Hideous!

Vivisection and animal testing is scientific fraud!!

Joanna D. (216)

The British Union for the Abolition of Vivisection has strongly condemned the increased number of animals used in experiments in the UK. Figures released today reveal that more than 3.1 million animals were used in tests in 2007, an increase of six per cent on the previous year. The number of actual experiments also increased by six per cent, to 3.2 million.
The numbers were announced by the Home Office in the annual Statistics of Scientific Procedures on Living Animals Great Britain 2007.
Despite the fact that the UK claims to have the tightest regulation on animal testing in the world, the number of animal experiments has risen by a massive 21 per cent since the Government came to power, from 2.6 million in 1997.

We still are waiting for revision of animal experiments directive in Europe. Once the item was removed from the official agenda. As far as we know there will be NOT primates experiments ban!!!!
Dimas "Let me add however that given the current state of scientific knowledge, the use of a limited number of other species of non-human primates is still unavoidable for a number of vital research programmes. This is especially true of research on severe global diseases. It would therefore be premature to set a timetable with fixed deadlines to phase out all use of non-human primates. I am convinced that better results can be achieved with the long-term commitment and engagement of all involved. We have to work together on an agreed strategy to develop alternatives, and I therefore call on you to play an active role in identifying the actions needed to turn this vision into a reality."

Joanna, thank you for this article. Can't believe Alice's petition regarding nicotine testing has so few sigs. We already know there is nothing good about nicotine how much more do we need to know? And yes buying cosmetics w/o supporting animal testing is very tricky as there is much dishonesty in the reporting--my question would be if you are ashamed to admit it, you shouldn't be doing it in the first place.

Quote: It should not be believed that all beings exist for the sake of the existence of man. On the contrary, all the other beings too have been intended for their own sakes and not for the sake of anything else.

Quote:"I am not interested to know whether vivisection produces results that are profitable to the human race or doesnt. ... the pain which it inflicts upon unconsenting animals is the basis of my enmity toward it, and it is to me sufficient justification of the enmity without looking further" -- Mark Twain --

Thursday October 30, 2008, 5:08 am
It's a great idea Maryann! As well as printing out leaflets for people with info about companies testing on animals.
However we have the right to know what product is tested on animals. The info should be on these products.
There is petition to FDA:
We the undersigned believe that it should be made mandatory for products which are animal tested to state so clearly in big, bold letters at the front of their packaging. We believe that companies have the right to decide their ways of production but we the consumers have the right to know.
thank you for taking the time to read this petition

At least the list should be useful for the ALF. If only they could break into some of these labs and rescue these animals.
