The photo of a mother dog peacefully slumbering with her innocent, newborn puppies would be endearing, if not for the location that the photo was taken.

This is the reality of kill shelters across America. In NJ, some shelters do not give an adoption period; they are simply put down.Newark is the best example. and all the other urban cities are not much better.

Do not blame the kill shelters, they kill because there are not enough homes. They are open admission, they do not have the same rights to refuse pets as "no-kill shetters"do. Blame the people who did not spay this dog in the first place.

either way no kill kill shelters these lives should be saved I never will understand why GOD allows ones to be born just to die without a life to live and yes the owner should have been responsible so that may be what we need to change is making better pet owners to not have this happen no or less abuse neglect reach a day when all the animals are saved and have homes or become working service animals help the sick cancer patients, but not abuse and experiments studies a plan that can come true

This beautiful family may pay the price of an irresposible owner who abandoned a pregnant, unspayed dog.
I pray that they might be saved. And cry for all the others that have been discarded.

Humanity must learn to respect all lives as their own is treasured! Life is a God given gift to every being. God gives life & only he can take it back, all others are murders punishable by laws! Mankind has no right to take another beings life. These are healthy puppies & have done nothing wrong by being born. Save this mom & her newborn pups. I share with my friends to forward to save them all. Thanks Sophia for posting this story!

it's looking good, you guys. the dog has an 'abandoned' hold on it until thursday. there's a woman in oregon who is all set up and ready to take mom and babies. there are $655 in pledges for transport. they just need a rescue to facilitate.

@Brenda Nelson why we called it shelters? First we need to know what is the meaning of shelters then work according name.
Actually Human being (administrator) is so selfish they design everything according their view or benefit. When they need they design when they don't need they destroy.
Same case will be happening with human beings. When they need oil or gas or radioactive elements they make relation when they don't need they break relation.
We saw whole the world according our view. We must see the world AS IT IS. We must respect and show gratitude for all units in this existence.
We can't stand without these units which is our main base.
Hope this innocent and beautiful creature will get it's right of living.

Noted - heartbreaking to say the least. I have taken in so many rescues off the streets just so that they may know the meaning of love, kindness and compassion, of a bowl of food and water, of a safe place to sleep at night, and on a hot summer's day, the feel of coolness from an aircon. I have given my animals the best care and the best life any dog could ever dream of. And yes, they are all sterilised. When I look at them I think of all those precious animals out there that deserve to have the same life, but don't. And I blame us!!!!

If only selfish people would spey/neuter their pets then this sadness would not happen and these gorgeous puppies would have a life,if you love your pets then you would not let this happen as for dumping her on the streets how callous can someone be!!!!! I hope they are saved - but not only them - there are thousands like them in shelters all over the US and all over the world who are condemned. Just as disturbing to me was the picture on the left side of the page of the cat skin "rug" that someone has been trying to sell. The picture is horrendous - the cat's head is still on the end of the rug and the face is just so haunting. I couldn't read the article, the picture was too upsetting. I hope the b*st*rd who did that gets skinned alive someday.

It's not the shelters' fault. It's the fault of breeders who deal in blood money, and the bought and paid for politicians who kowtow to these constituents who consider animals a "product". It is also due to owners who can't be bothered to have their animals spayed or who let them roam.

For every action there is a reaction. According to the law of karma, if we cause pain and suffering to other living beings, we must endure pain and suffering in return, both individually and collectively. We reap what we sow, in this life and the next, for nature has her own justice. No one can escape the law of karma

What piece of filth discards a pregnant dog? Next-there should be no kill shelters anywhere. Spay and neuter! Why is that such a hard concept to grasp? I pray for these babies and pray that someone will rescue them and hope that I hear an update soon saying just that. No more killing of our animals because some people either don't give a damn or are plain irresponsible

America shame and to blame. More underdevolped countries started with NO KILL STRATEGY. USA iconsider
State as leader ,than consider to be the leader of No kill policy regarding animals and example what's right.
"Fire chief in Wisconsin suits up to rescue dog struggling in icy water"-prove citizens of USA care.

Years ago I took a pregnant cat off the streets. I made sure that her little 'uns found responsible forever homes, with loving human servants who had them fixed, and then took Mama Kitty to the vet for the "big snip."

Blame it on the irresponsible humans who did not care to spay/neuter their anilmals. Some are just pure ignorant but some with their misunderstanding that by doing so, they are "abusing" their pets. I am working on convincing my co-worker to fix her male cat. She did all for all her female but not with her male one, she just said that he will not bring more kitties home and she "feels" sorry for him. I tried to explain to her that there will be female cats in her neighborhood that will get pregnant but she just brushed it off saying that all her neighbors are nice and will take care of all new kitties anyway. Well, I will not give up on trying this!!!

Mum and pups are not safe yet, sometimes these shelters pull tricks and the dogs are killed before a rescue turns up, so please continue to share. The pull fee is quoted at over $300, plus they will need to be cared for until pups are ready to go to their new homes.

To this shelter and others like it: We here in the North have animal shelters that take rescues from different parts of the country. The animals find good homes. We have a no-kill shelter in Springfield, MA that has done wonderful things with animals. Yes, the responsible thing to do is spay animals because there are not enough good, loving homes for them.
My son, and his wife adopted three dogs rescues from the South and they have been the most loving dogs. All animals deserve a chance. Please, save the mom and pups.
