To develop individually and as a species, we must push ourselves to find the extraordinary in the ordinary, beauty in ugliness, logic in chaos. But how?

Steve, I just knew you had to be an author due to your outstanding writing ability and eloquent words. Heroes - Yes, we do need them. More today than ever. I find it interesting that your hero was a spider. Perhaps I can utilize your perspective when bees, wasps and hornets are around (I panic). When I was a child, I used to catch them in jars. They were my friends. Then, suddenly, a neighbor lady had to spoil my friendship by saying "they were going to get me someday and sting me."

With the recent onslaught of the depressed economy, loss of jobs, general aspects of negativity in the world, this is where heros can be instrumental in giving people hope and understanding. Heros give us the motivation to learn new things, accept limitations, strive to conquer our fears and to learn tolerance and acceptance of people, animals or things different from us. Thank you for such a wonderful delightful article.

Well done Steve if we'd face ourselves and look into our own truths -and accept and take the challenges we are given -instead of giving into the ignorance that comes with fear of the unknown -I believe that one would find that we all posess heroism -as you and the spider both did -after all -she could have run away too -but she didn't.

(something about javascript and cookies in my browser stopped my comment from going through on your article)

Good story, Steve. If I didn't have my heroes, I might not have made it this far.

Im not a prophet ,or a stone age man/Just a mortal with potential of a superman (David Bowie)Sad is the land without heroes, sadder is the land in need of heroes (Bertolt Brecht)..
We all have heroic qualities, the mother who struggles to bring up children,on her own, whilst working in a low paid job is a hero,Subcommandante Marcos is heroic, Rosa Parks was a hero,Princess Di did little that was heroic, but due to the idiocy surrounding royalty, was feted as a hero..(Sloane lives sloanish life of luxury, and is ill treated, is not exactly doing much for the common good)
As far as potential is concerned, the vast majority of us,acheive nothing like our potential..education is devalued,or rationed to the elites, who make scant use of it..intellectuals are distrusted ,and ordinariness/sameness or dull common sense, are elevated to the level of virtues.
For me,it is those acts of self sacrifice, that are heroic,as well as those acts which progress society,or challenge the bullies and warmongers, greedmongers and just plain cruel.Donald Trump isnt a hero,Murdoch has no moral virtues, and Bush is the opposite of heroism..
My main hero is George Orwell,a democratic socialist, from a privileged background, who exposed the horrors of Stalinism, when he knew it would bring much criticism in Britain..he kept to what he beleived a decent fair, democratic and decent society, should look like, and rejected the one which abused its name..the USSR a land of oppresion ,dictatorship wherin trade unions were crushed, and voices of opposition murdered. Many attaked him,but his honesty has been proven correct,in this and many other matters.

Oh yes, we all need (a) hero. Mine is/was my grandmother. If it wasn't for her I don't think I would of ever survived. Thank you Steve.

Thanks for sharing your story Steve, I was delighted to find someone else who formed a friendship with a spider!
I have a spider that lives behind the sink, I named him Boris! He's been there for nearly a year, he's very shy so I don't see him that often but I know he's there.

I grew up a-dreamin' of bein' a cowboy,
and Lovin' the cowboy ways.
Pursuin' the life of my high-ridin' heroes,
I burned up my childhood days.
I learned of all the rules of the modern-day drifter,
Don't you hold on to nothin' too long.
Just take what you need from the ladies, then leave them,
With the words of a sad country song.
My heroes have always been cowboys.
And they still are, it seems.
Sadly, in search of, but one step in back of,
Themselves and their slow-movin' dreams.
Cowboys are special with their own brand of misery,
From being alone too long.
You could die from the cold in the arms of a nightmare,
Knowin' well that your best days are gone.
Pickin' up hookers instead of my pen,
I let the words of my years fade away.
Old worn-out saddles, and 'old worn-out memories,
With no one and no place to stay.
My heroes have always been cowboys.
And they still are, it seems.
Sadly, in search of, but one step in back of,
Themselves and their slow-movin' dreams.
Sadly, in search of, but one step in back of,
Themselves and their slow-movin' dreams.

thanks fo sharing and i have noted,
"One of the secrets to evolving individually and as a species is in keeping our minds open.

We must seek out new experiences, new knowledge, new adventures.
We must not allow irrational fears to dictate the course of our lives, ultimately denying us the freedom of choice we deserve.
We must push ourselves to find the extraordinary in the ordinary, beauty in ugliness, logic in chaos.
Like the result of me giving Lucy a home, you’ll be amazed at the consequences of even the tiniest of actions and how they can enrich our lives and, through a knock-on effect, potentially enrich the whole world"
